I recently watched some Electric Underground videos about mechanicaly pure beat em'ups and schmups, and was wondering if any1 has game that come to mind when it comes to mechanicaly pure JRPG's?

I mean specificaly as the genre's most basic, distilled form, where the interesting part of the game is not the story, but the difficulty of overcoming game's obstacles with your spells/ items/game's mechanics. I know blobbers and strategy rpg's have plenty of examples, thats why i'm trying to limit it strictly to classical JRPG's.

The games that come to mind for me are:

-early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games

-Last dream, as an expanded version of FF1

-weirdly i'd put Five nights at fuckboy's here, despite being a meme game the highest difficulty and most secret bosses were a legitiamtely intersting mechanical challenge

-Black souls 2 hardest zone.

- SMT 3 on hard, where most of the game's fun comes from overcoming incresingly bullshit battles and the story takes a 2nd seat

Anyone has any other examples of similar JRPG's?

Enchant Farm

Arguably late game Bravely Default on hard, the boss rush in chapter 8 was the most fun I've ever had in an RPG mechanically, but it's also bogged down by repetition and shit writing.

Difficulty mods or challenge runs. What makes any systems shallow is lack of difficulty.

You can safely disregard any sludge with Touhou on it. Touhou fangames are inherently low effort because if they were worth a damn, the creators wouldn't be riding the coattails of a known, successful brand for attention.
