Full voice acting.
That's it. The expectation of full voice acting has done immeasurable damage to the open world RPG. If Bethesda released Hammerfell with a staggering amount of text, lore, dialog, and elaborate branching quests to the point it contained more than the previous three ES games combined, but it was not fully voiced, people would fucking riot.

The expectation of full voice acting killed the open world RPG.
