Which has the best JRPG library?

For me it goes PS2 > PS1 > SNES.
SNES just really doesn't have that much, Final Fantasy IV, V, VI are better on PS1. Chrono Trigger and Earthbound are kino but Secret of Mana, Lufia, Gaia and Mario RPG are over glazed boomer slop.
PS1 is a juggernaut with the best FF IX + Tactics, Chrono Cross, Xenogears.
But PS2 mogs them both out of the water with Persona, SMT, FF X, Xeno Saga, etc. Thoughts?
>>
JRPGs were on the way out by the PS2 era. FF10 marked the beginning of the end, though it’s one of my favorites.
I love some PSX era ones but overall
I’d have to say SNES wins.

DS mogs all of them.

Cringe.

PS2 gets you FF1-12, both Chrono games, on top of whatever exclusives it has to the console. That alone wins.

Step aside, kid.

SNES and PS1 have more iconic games because they got the good ideas out first. What's the showstopper game on PS2 that's on the same level for its time as CT and FF7? Nocturne, Persona, Kingdom Hearts, X-2, Xenosaga?
The PS2 probably has more consistent quality across its jrpg library, but the stories aren't on the same level and the visuals aren't pushing the technology. No company's games look as good as Squaresoft's, and X/XII/X-2 are all lacking in the story department, whereas on SNES and PS1 quality went hand in hand with story and presentation.
>>
I want to say SNES because they weren't bogged down by "technical improvements" on that system.
Lots of experimental stuff that wasn't a slog to play.
PS2 was the weakest as the rising costs couldn't keep up with the ambitions. Its weird when you realize that none of the final fantasy games have had a world map with airships since FF10

I dropped the series after 10 (though I love it). Literally not my problem.

Not true at all. The PS2 has the most JRPGs out of any system.
>>
>>3938378
I think you confused, most of PS2 is gayRPGs, JRPGs are few and far between.
>>

FFX lacking in the story department
No I can give you X-2 or 12, but 10 is right there with 6, 7, and 9 for the story.

snes>ps2>>>>ps1
Snes has jrpgs with great ideas (romancing sagas, live a live, hourai gakuen, dark half, rudra etc), meanwhile ps2 jrpgs are less of great ideas and more of simply being good jrpgs
I'm likely biased against ps1 jrpgs though because the ones i played mostly shitty ones like digimon world 2+3 and hoshigami also never a fan of FF in general

I think you kind of hit the nail on the head with the PS2 library. It has a lot of solid 8/10 JRPGs, but none that are as iconic or influential as the SNES and PS1's most popular titles.

I guess there's Final Fantasy X and Persona 4, but that's about all I can think of. The only other non-Pokemon 6th gen JRPG that I recall having a significant lasting legacy is Tales of Symphonia, but that's a Game Cube game.

I agree I should go back and give X a chance. It was just one of those games that I saw my friend playing first and felt like it was spoiled and played something else.
>>3939254
Yeah If I was going to answer my own question, I would suggest FFX, one of the Personas, basically the actual games I listed. The PS2 library is deep, you could choose from a lot of great jrpgs. I just think they aren't as iconic like you said. I'm enjoying playing more of them also.

ps1 > snes > ps2
honestly i think the ps2s jrpg library is mostly shit

>ps1 > snes > ps2
Agreee
>PS1
FF7, FF Tactics (jrpg enough for me), and Lunar Silver Star Story are three of my all time favorites. FF8, FF9, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana and Lunar Eternal Blue are high quality too.
>SNES
Chrono Trigger is otherworldly. FF4, FF6, and are top notch. We need more 2-player co-op rpgs like Secret of Mana. Super Mario rpg was fun Outside of Square, there wasn't much to speak of. Lufia 1&2 gets more love than they deserve. Tales of Phantasia and Secret of Mana 3 don't count because I never played them on snes.
>PS2
No real masterpieces. FFX and Persona are good, but not great.
>>
PS2 > SNES = PS1

>PS2
The PS2 just has a ton of enjoyable JRPGs, and is hard to match in either variety or quality.

>SNES
While I loved some them back in the day, I've grown a lot less fond of the stereotypical 4th gen JRPG formula over time. I feel like they lost the resource management and challenge of older games, and replaced it with spectacle and a heavier emphasis on story (which often isn't anything special.) That said, there are a ton of JRPGs on the console, and I still really enjoy some of them.

>PS1
A few PS1 JRPGs are among my absolute favorites. Outside of those, though, there just aren't many on the console I care about. There are some cases where I respect how ambitious and unique a game is, but think the execution is lacking enough that I don't find it especially enjoyable to actually play through (like Xenogears and Legend of Mana.)

Uhh faggot...? Is that you? You have a call waiting, line 2. They say it's the Based Department.
>>

>Which has the best JRPG library?
In terms of quality, PS1
In terms of quantity, PS2
>>
>>3934271
PS1. My fondest memories are of playing JRPGs on my PS2 back in the early 2000s, and while I did play a lot of kingdom Hearts... if I really stop to think about it the PS2 gets so much credit because it could also play the entire PS1 library due to it's backwards compatibility. There is just something magical about FF7, 8, and 9; Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon, Breath of Fire 3, Brave Fencer Musashi... I could go on.
>>
>>3934271
Switch > ps2 > SNES > Ps1 > DS

Those would be the 5 best platforms for Jrpgs and that's how I'd rank em.
>>
>>3934271
PSP.
