Have any JRPGs come out the last 20 years that are truly must plays?

I doubt it.
I quite liked Lightning Returns, but hard to suggest as a must play to anyone.
Even other final fantasy fans.

Without a time limit I'm not sure what are truly must plays anyways.
If you're a fan of rpgs, maybe Chrono Trigger is a must play.
If you're a fan of jrpgs, maybe original FF7 is a must play.

Literally worse and somehow more obnoxious than the Enchant Farm shill.

I haven't seen a single one that interests me, unless you consider Dark Souls a JRPG. (And I don't, it fails the RPG part not the J part).

Based on what I see JRPG Zoomers talking about, this would be my guesses as to games they'd suggest:
- Persona 5
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses
- Tales of Vesperia
- maybe Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (though that might just have gotten a lot of attention due to coomer content)

Crystal Project.

Could you explain what you don't like about it?

'Cus I like the combat and I've been working on a FF5 style of RPG. Would be nice to know what I could do to improve on it.

Nope, none of them offers anything new or groundbreaking at all
>>
Crystal Project shills overrate it too much, it's not a bad game in any means,
They just love job simulators, and those are the only thing they salivate on when they see "job system" on a game description. Hence they call them "must-plays"

Also if you are trying to recommend a game you should be able to give an explanation of its qualities, subjectively or objectively, not outright shilling
>>
Are these shillers in the room with you right now anon?

Etrian Odyssey IV was really good, and that's where they added difficulty levels if you're a weenie.

SaGa Scarlet Grace has probably my favorite turn-based battle system in any RPG, but it's dragged down by lack of production values
>>
Anyone that asks such a retarded question has zero standards to begin with and worships abysmal dogshit like Xenogears, Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy, at best they have some contrarian but equally bad picks like Grandia, Lufia or whatever third rate shovelware they played as kids.
>>
Crystal Project with the Final Fantasy Project mod. No story still. Nothing's saving that.

Baseline, I fucking love theorycrafting and setting up Class/Sub-Class builds. I like its use of MMO-style aggro systems 'cus it adds a level of strategerie that removes a lot of the unpredictability that team-based RPGs have.
It's not like you NEED a tank, either.
You can totally engage content on your terms.

Vanilla's per-class skillset was all over the place.
imo, only some classes had enough identity to make them play distinctly.
FFP classes are much more put together and everything's better balanced. There's a bunch of fun and clever ways to engage with the threat system now, too.

The FF14 references are fucking retarded, though.

Pal, if you look up to the top of the site, you'll see a bunch of /letters/ press on /v/ you'll feel at home there. This board is for people that actually know about rpgs.
