What JRPG remaster/remakes, not counting FF7:Remake, do you consider better than the originals or as the definitive version? It just seems like nowadays every JRPG is getting an update and I wonder how many of them are actually worth the effort people put into them.
The Final Fantasy 7 remake blows. The GBA port of the original Final Fantasy is a lot better than the NES original. The visuals are better, there is more content, better balance, and far fewer bugs.
>>3940268SNES Remakes of Dragon Quest 1, 2, 3.All other games should be played on original console.
>>3940268>Seiken Densetsu 3/ Trails of Mana>LiveALive>Phantom Bravewell just extra content>Disgaea1 2Extra Content and some fixes>Chrono Trigger due to the cutscenes added>FFTSubbed voices and Quality of Life changes >DQ 4,5,6,7,and 8>All kingdom heartscan play subbed now and extra battles>Lunar 1+2CAN PLAY SUBBED NOW>Sword of Mana >>3940270nah, it was great, the only character that got shafted was Cid. Everyone else had their stories expounded upon to the utmost degree especially Yuffie and Barrett.
>>3940268Pretty much all of the Tales remakes are either better or just as good, they have a good track record. Trails in the Sky 1st is a much more fun game than the original, although I obviously don't think the original is bad.>>3940297DQ2 HD-2D is better
>>3940380>do you consider better than the originals or as the definitive version? None. But there are still a few worth playing:Metal Max ReturnsDragon Quest V (PS2)Final Fantasy 1+2 (PSX)>>3940297The SNES remakes of DQ1-2-3 turn the gameplay into a joke. Even 3, which is the least casualized of the three, has things like the item bag which nullifies the use of a healer at least until Darma temple, or the Boomerang and Flail which nullify the importance of offensive spells since now you have physical attackers who also target entire groups of even everyone at 0 MP cost. One of the best thing about the NES DQs was precisely how tight balance was but you wouldn't know that playing any of the later versions.
>>3940380>nah, it was greatDogshit pacing, ruined the tone, ruined the story with the whispers and multiverse bullshit, forced sephiroth in every scene, ruined Aerith's death
>>3940416Aerith dies???
>>3940459>AerithLiterally who? Do you mean Aeris?
>>3940268>as the definitive versiononly the originals can be the definitive version
>>3940416>Dogshit pacingActually got to see why everyone was fighting. Got to see what fuckery Shinra was really pulling, we got to know the slums, the daily life and social in equality.> ruined the toneI was much more invested this time around than the original. Cloud seemed like a dick in the original, but this time around he's genuinely a nice guy putting up a hardass act. Also it was funny seeing his stowism broken.> ruined the story with the whispers and multiverse bullshit,Did we really give a fuck about the plight of the folks in the slums? Did we give a fuck about Avalanche or their motives?
>>3940380>>Lunar 1+2The non Sega CD versions of the Lunar games are complete garbage compared to the originals. Illusion Woods is the perfect microcosm. They take what was a sprawling dungeon set is a forest of massive trees with hidden illusionary passages that lead to an underground network of tunnels and replaced it with a short area where bushes block paths through a tiny hedge maze.
>>3940268HGSS may have more content but it completely fucked balancing and certain cut scenes are made more obnoxious just for the sake of it.>A lot of Gen II Pokemon were balanced around all the badge boosts, stat experience etc. Things that don't exist in HGSS.>The same principle apply to difficulty curve, making late-game much more grindier.>Ethan/Lyra serve zero purpose.>The entire legendary bird plotline is just Kimono Girls bothering player because they're "TEH CHOSEN ONE!" and must be forced into bullying random bird because of that.>Not being able to delete numbers from PokeGear means no optimizing calls for specific items.>Rockets having named admins and executives completely misses the point. They literally are supposed to be mismanaged, frantic mess of organization because they lost the only competent person leading their team. It's pretty as fuck, but there's a lot of small things that usually make me wish to just play Crystal, instead.
>>3941355Gen 2 didn't have any fucking balancing to begin with
>>3940685/thread
>>3941355>fucked balancingSounds like gen2 to me.
>>3940297interesting, I came here to say the GBC remakes of dragon quest are best.
>>3940268Trials of ManaMetal Max ReturnsMetal Max 2 ReloadedEvery SaGa remake and remaster. Literally all of them.Ys I-II ChroniclesYs Oath in Felghana
>>3941355Only thing I can say is that it's easy to be spoiled by the faster game speeds of the later games and it makes the Gameboy ones annoying to play today but otherwise I also think the remakes completely lost the plot in regards to what the original was about. It feels like they put in a shitton of effort but the final game is more of a "sidemake" than something that embodies the spirit of the originals.
>>3940381I mean... I could argue that for several of tales games. I'm not saying it's a bad record but there absolutely are some stinkers in the mix - and to be completely fair a lot of that is just an issue with mobile ports. Looking at GBA Phantasia and 3DS Abyss. And then there's Symphonia which kinda fucked itself after GCN by going down to 30 fps for PS2 and then using that as the basis for all its other ports. The recent steam ports - GracesF (though the original Graces F was a good improvement), Xillia, and now Berseria (which was already on steam and frankly hardly changed and I don't know why anyone would bother with it and...) are okay but they're almost entirely just for people who never played the originals and never will. Which is nice to have, but there's no reason for people like me to ever touch them. But that said, they do have some really great ones - Destiny DC and Vesperia Definitive for example. And I've heard good things about Hearts R and Innocence R, though I've never played them myself. >>3941355Having played the GBC games as a kid, I can admit there's a certain appeal to them that the older games lost. But also I can guarantee that I'll never play a pokemon game without the Gen3+ PC boxes / inventory UI improvements so it's kinda moot.
