Dungeon crawlers like The Dark Spire look interesting. How do I get into them?
>>
>>3945639
you fire it up in an emulator and start playing it?
>>
Get game. Play game.

This is the best place to start.

You watch gameplays done by others and then pretend you did play them when someone touches the topic

Ah and here folks we see the process of EVEOlution hArd at work. Notice how the Boomer and Millennial throw shade at the contemporary culture that Gen Z has brought about.

What d'ya think'll 'appen if I jam my finger right in me own butthole?
>>
I've got a question for the DRPG heads here; is there a good software to draw maps on a second monitor? I just don't want to bust out pen and paper when playing older games.
>>
>>3945887
coloring a grid in any excel-clone does the job just fine
>>
>>3945905
I've got proper Excel thanks to Massgrave, I guess I'll just use that. Thanks.
>>
>>3945887
Grid cartographer is paid.
Gridmonger is free.
>>

>How do I get into them?
Have you tried playing the game? Or is that too complicated?
>>
>>3945947
Alright, took me a sec to get used to Gridmonger's keyboard focused layout but this is pretty great, thanks anon.
>>
I started this game and actually got hard locked in the tutorial! At the end you're in a room with a guard and there are two doors. Inspecting one says like "it's locked" and the other has the guard appear and tell me to use the door or something. It's a neat game, but I've never had one lock up on me like that.

Monsters of Mican is currently on sale. What's it like? It look like a gonzo version of Might & Magic.
>>
>>3945639
Just play it? Japanese first person dungeon crawlers are usually pretty beginner friendly. For entry level western crawlers you have stuff like Legend of Grimrock or Lands of Lore.
>>
>>3945947
Never heard of these... neat! Thanks.

I grew up playing Shining In The Darkness with my father. I remember him showing me how to draw the maps on grid paper he used for his work. I think those maps still exist somewhere, not entirely sure.

Shining In The Darkness (the OG for me)
Shining The Holy Ark (emulate Sega Saturn)
Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey Redux
Persona Q / Q2
Etrian Odyssey IV or whichever one has Titan in the title, I liked it, didn't play others

There are others that look good on Steam, I can't recall the names now. Labyrinth of Yomi or something maybe?
>>
For ToHeart Dungeon Travelers, stuck on floor 15 as the boss will just spam Shadow Sew and fuck my party over. I understand I need to silence it, but apparently Valkyrie's gust thrust is shit at it and I need to level an Assassin or a JK fast, how do I grind up my characters efficiently? Even taking a risk insofar it seems I'll have to get through at least some 30-40 encounters before Maryan reaches level 30 to switch to JK and that's assuming she doesn't get killed in any of them.

you play it you stupid fucking retard

I only really played Labyrinth of Refrain

Hey now anon, that's not very nice. You forgot to call OP a faggot. Stupid fucking retarded FAGGOT is what you meant to say. Shame on you.

Otohime? Silence won't do a thing since she's immune, slow can land
It shouldn't be that crazy when you have curatives to outlast shadow sew, though if you wish to farm levels I would suggest the daphnes on floor 12 and 13 because they drop powerful 50% revives worth stockpiling even into the endgame.
>>
>>3945639
Tried The Dark Spire today - didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Went to play Etrian IV which I used to own but sold so I emulated it - it's just grindy with no good narrative. The best dungeon crawlers were the Shining series games (In The Darkness, Holy Ark), Strange Journey, and Persona Q/2.

Is Refrain or Galleria better?
>>
>>3949233
I think Galleria makes some mechanical improvements but it's held back by half the game taking place in procedurally generated maps. Refrain is a better package less likely to leave a bad taste in your mouth by the end.
>>
>>3949268
Looking into this, Galleria is apparently a 50 hour tutorial for a 50 hour post-game, and I don't think I have that in me, so I'll go with Refrain. Thank you.

Most DRPGs you start in one of three ways
>1: keep rerolling your characters until you get high stats
>2: grind the opening area until your ahead of the exp curve
>3: create an OP build at the beginning (surprisingly the rarest)
It might sound like I'm shitting on the genre but I'm not. These games are almost always built upon mathematics and rarely give you many different options in combat so it's usually a matter of "are your stats better than the enemies". Where the DRPG genre is usually expected to shine is in exploration and experimentation. If you run into, say, slimes that no one in your party can damage, then try different things (like fire or ice attacks) or look around another place in the dungeon to see if you can't find something to help. Finally, I'd recommend playing these games in a sort of zen state. They're very repetitive, so you'll want to be comfy and in a relaxed mindset. These games are usually closer to gardening than sports.

Dunning-Kruger retard.

Shining In The Darkness and Shining The Holy Ark are the best dungeon crawlers I have played. Etrian is good but lacks a story and atmosphere, though I have only experienced Etrian IV. Persona Q is fantastic, good story, but a little TOO much dialogue back and forth, I wish I could instantly skip all of it sometimes. The mechanics are similar to Etrian, they basically mirrored it. Still though, the Shining titles are the best hands down. The story is simple but effective and the dungeons and gameplay prove challenging. The music is great, the style is great, the games are near perfect.
>>
>>3946107
I've played it for some 6 hours
Gonzo Might and Magic is correct except its way more linear, ugly and poorly designed.
I thought it was going to be focused on monster catching mechanics but that seems to be a side activity

It's depressing how forgotten the shining series is.

Interestingly there was one based on Bastard!! of all things.
Not too surprising since it started as kind of a manga version of Wizardry IV. They came out the same year so it may be just a coincidence
