I’m pretty convinced that the modern generic RPG does not understand what healing and support is. Most modern MMORPGs for example design healers to be DPS with healing buttons that aren’t actually needed or make all damage telegraphed to make the healer feel more like a dps to play.
Support classes basically don’t exist anymore.
Which game had your favorite support class? And I mean actually support, reactionary heals, buff maintenance, resource management, etc.
I do not mean completely passive support like “ally recieves buff when you counter or ally gets healed when you press this attack button that is a part of your main dps combo.
For me it was FFXI, this game had like 50 different flavors of support classes but my favorite was the dedicated one, bard.

Modern RPGs are made by people who don’t understand what a man or a woman is. You expect them to understand this?

probably ff11 for me too.
Dancer felt great to play.
Debuffing with steps, buffing with sambas while attacking in melee.
Able to use a secondary resource for healing in a clutch.

Only played late on a max 75 private server.
If ff11 had actually good UI and controls, it could've been as good as classic WoW.

My favorite from that game is Red Mage and Scholar. Their role varied depending on party composition and content being done but in the vast majority of lowman content (6-person or below parties) which include exp groups they were basically healers with a shitload of utility in the form of a vairety of debuffs and a variety of buff maintenance while also maintaining the group alive via heals.

Dancer was the strongest exp party healer, people were just afraid of change.
Scholar was heavily underestimated as well. I don’t think people realized how hard it was for a red mage to keep refresh up on 2-3 targets while keeping up haste on 4 and still have mp efficiency. Even with Convert that is basically like half of your mp in routine spellcasts that you do every 3 minutes. Scholar didn’t have haste but it was much much much more mp efficient. DNC had all of this while being tp to healing efficient and essentially providing the same types of buffs as a bard via step debuff system

eq bard/enchanter were hilariously op

too bad ffxi bard was a glorified bot, can't even charm baka

Brd/bst could charm very effectively though

WoW suceeded because it made support classes be able to solo and be efficient in groups. No one liked waiting an hour as a cleric for a group or be railroaded to certain levelling paths because you couldnt solo one mob
