Do you consider Square-Enix to still be the top RPG publisher in the modern day, or has another company dethroned them (Bamco, Sega)? Pic semi-related.
I stopped considering Squaresoft at all after the merger.
>Square-Enix to stillthey never were lol
>>3949021nope, Square has lost my faith since the whole 13 getting unnecessary sequels crap and the whole debacle with FF15
>>3949021What are they going to do about it and why do they need 15 years to realize this
>>3949021They dethroned themselves. Every single game they put out last year was a rerelease, and they're going to do the same thing again this year.
>>3949021Consider that the top RPG publisher (ignoring gacha mobile games because guess what, those are the actual top ones and have been for years) is Gamefreak, and SE was surpassed by them over 25 years ago
>>3949021They will say everything except admit the games have been dogshit for 20 years. It doesn't matter if the releases aren't as frequent as in the past. That's true for all big series. It hasn't stopped many of them to become hits with younger crowds.
Square lost all momentum with FfX2, literally killed the series.
>>3949021>>3949049Fabula Nova Crystallis really was a death sentence for Square Enix. Nothing good came from it. The best thing that came of it was Type-0. And now they're still doing trilogies with the VII Remake which really should have just been one game. FNC did irreparable damage to SE.
>>3949021still?
>>3949367FNC isn't really even the first. This starts with the Compilation of FFVII back in mid-00s. The difference was that those were obviously low-budget cash grabs (and one expansive ass CGI movie) and thus easy to ignore unless that shit was your shit or you just HAD to play everything FFVII regardless of quality. The issue is when they misinterpreted the success of milking their most valuable single game as the blueprints to create a new game and out-of-the-gate companion pieces AND have those companion pieces be far higher budget (i.e. compare and contrast Crisis Core vs Type-0 and Dirge of Cerberus vs Versus XIII in conception). Truly, they played themselves. As bad as Comp was (arguably is, as I consider this stupid remake project to just be Comp 2.0), it wasn't unearned as it was building off of the unassailable success of FFVII from the prior decade. Building their castle on the untested, unrelease FFXIII was retarded.
>>3949021What are you talking about? Everyone knows SE has never been good. Squaresoft was good, Enix was good but Square Enix has been a consistent cancer pretty much since the merger. It´s only value now is as a publisher because it has the structure to localize games like DQ or Nier. But ok, if we are being absolutely fair no other japanese company was capable of taking it´s place. The industry just grew too big and in the wrong way. The expected production values for big ass IPs became insane and most japanese developers just couldn´t adapt... and the ones that did needed to play it extremely safe to ensure survival.
Despite the contrarians that make up the general 4chan population, Square Enix and FF in particular still has not been surpassed in the JRPG sphere in regards to sheer production value, polish and prestige. Even though the FF titles have been worse than their golden age, no one else has put out anything even comparable to the worst FFs. Really, what is the competition here? >SMT is barely even in the same genre, being more of a Monster Collector competing with Pokemon. >Dragon Quest has been relegated to historic novelty status since VIII.>SaGa specced every point into combat and zero into anything else, killing any chance for mass appeal>Tales and Star Ocean are eternal midcarders>Trails is just a straight jobber franchiseAnd what other JRPG series is even still alive? The genre completely cratered before the 7th gen.
>>3949655>>Dragon Quest has been relegated to historic novelty status since VIII.DQXI sold more than any other Dragon Quest and broke through in a big way in the west.
>>3949655>Square Enix and FF in particular still has not been surpassed in the JRPG sphere in regards to sheer production value, polish and prestige.I know you intend this as praise, but have you considered the possibility that this is why JRPGs suck now?>t. guy who quit playing them 25 years ago
>>3949655Sega's been doing pretty well with RPGs lately, with Persona, SMT, Like a Dragon, and Metaphor doing well
>>3949722Persona's last main entry was 10 years ago. It's a dead series.
>>39497703 Reload was only two years ago
>>3949271>gacha mobile games because guess what, those are the actual top onesYou young faggots make me sick
>>3949804>re-release of a 25 year old game is the only thing the series has gotten in 10 yearsDeader than Virtua Fighter, at least that series has a new game announced
>take a million years in between installments>pivot to an ugly photorealistic dark fantasy style that looks like every other triple a on the marketwhy don't the kids like our franchise
If Square Enix can't even make a decent remake of their most popular game then what can they do at this point?
>>3949985Why are you mad at people being objective about reality?
>>3949021Does anyone else also have the urge to call him and say "Moshi Yoshi"? Or is it just me?
>>3950780>how will they ruin it?...not that far off, honestly.
>>3949021Squaresoft gave up on JRPGs after pokemon showed up their $500,000,000 budget. They went all in on moviegames and double and tripled down. They even cancelled all their interesting projects to focus on raping FF7 harder.
>>3951463>pokemon showed up their $500,000,000 budget.?
>>3949021final fantasy made its bones with my generation with the pizza hut final fantasy 7 demo. we had played earlier snes games but thats the one that really landed and made its mark. now that a single pizza costs $40, hard to break into that world like it was back then
>>395152240 bucks in all states?
>>3949021>Do you consider Square-Enix to still be the top RPG publisher in the modern dayThey haven't been top for nearly 25 years now. Final Fantasy hasn't been mainstream since 10 and Dragon Quest games come and go without barely a splash on gamer culture. Games like Octopath Traveler sell moderately well but again they have no impact or create fandoms anywhere close to what FF6-10 created. Meanwhile Undertale and it's derivatives are household names, Persona is beloved, and when people want to play actual arpgs instead of the pseudo ones square likes to make they just play souls-likes.Square right now is a zombie company coasting off nearly quarter century old success. They're struggling to innovate and they refuse to take advantage of extremely easy opportunities to reinvigorate their studio.
>>3951598>zombie companyBasically all companies are or are becoming one
>>3949655Leave it to FF fans to be absolutely delusional
>>3951527I know some people like to pretend or push narratives like everyone lives in these East coast/west coast overpriced shitholes, but I'm pretty sure he's just exaggerating. It may not be near $40 but prices are still up a lot everywhere.
>>3951491He probably means that Square puts a fuckload of money into their games and get diminishing returns while Pokemon is made on a budget of a ham sandwich and makes insane profit, so they gave up on trying to compete in RPGs.
>>3949367XIII sequels were good, and XV officially isn't even FNC anymore, but I suppose you could still argue FNC was responsible. But Type-0 alone made it all worth it if you ask me.I think SE slowly killing itself one way or another was just inevitable. No one forced them to turn vXIII into XV or make XVI an action game spin off of XIV. VIIR is slop but reception-wise is ultimately working out better for them than the mainline entries. If they say fuck it and just make the next mainline in that style, it might help.
>>3952823>VIIR is slop but reception-wise is ultimately working out better for them than the mainline entriesRebirth reviewed essentially the same across the board (by players) as XVI did while also selling fewer copies than XVI did. Despite the extremely vocal posters on 4chan, both for Rebirth and against XVI, XVI was actually the more successful game, selling more copies than Rebirth while having less than half the budget.
>>3950780Oh boyAn unfunny screencap from 4 years ago on a different boardGlad you’re gonna keep posting that
>>3952826Huh, well, I stand corrected in that case. Just feels like XVI might as well never have come out from how little I heard of it.
>>3949021No because there is really still not any other RPG publishers with series as iconic as SE. Like what does Bamco have to compete against Dragon Quest and FF? Tales? Lmfao.
>>3951598>Final Fantasy hasn't been mainstream since 10Its so easy to see when someone is a pseud
>>3952966Bioware
>>3949021They stopped being good JRPG devs with X's release.>do you mean after X's release? No.
>>3949367Lightning Returns was unironically Majora's Mask-tier lvdokino. Woefully underrated after the incomprehensible gibberish that was XIII-2.
>>3949655Modern Final Fantasy wishes to have made as mid a game as Tales of Arise, compared with the likes of FFXV, XVI or the VII demakes.
>>3949655You make a good point. Single player Final Fantasy may be well past its heyday, but even the "mid" it's putting out is better than the competition. SMT is fine, Persona is fine, DQ is fine, I never liked SaGa, Tales is fine, Star Ocean's only truly good game was 2, Trails is for retards who like the Wheel of Time series. Final Fantasy still beats them all.
Everyone naturally focuses on JRPGs in this discussion but WRPGs are way more accessible to the masses than they used to be. WRPG was practically indistinguishable from CRPG until what, the seventh console generation? Fallout 1 was considered a big hit when it barely passed 100,000. Meanwhile any console rpg people know about today passed a million. The gap between numbers of pc and console gamers was massive. When they were a well known name they were competing in a space that virtually had no domestic competition. Now most people play on pc (or phone but that’s mostly a different market) and even the ones on console have access to all the big western rpgs that exist. Relative to most JRPGs they’re still among the most popular there is.
