Why don't crpgs have cool battle music like this?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1De238B2sMU
>>3949440Because>CRPGsThere are different ideas on music theory between western and eastern RPGs.
>>3949442And what does western music theory say about battle music exactly? That it should be bland and forgettable unlike JRPG battle music?
>>3949440it's shocking to me there wasn't a single miss in core games battle tracks until 13
>>3949442>There are different ideas on music theory between western and eastern RPGs.I enjoy how Uematsu seems to be a big fan of Russian composers in general. I’ve noticed little motifs from Tchaikovsky and Kalinnikov in particular, in FF7.
>>3949446EPIC ORCHESTRAL CHORUS
>>3949440Mind you those are orchestral arrangements. If you're doing a 1:1 comparison it would be something like FF1 to Ultima 4, year release-wise.FF1 NEShttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjPF3AwVPM4Ultima IV Amigahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg4SQ5Nq_94Big difference is Ultima was meant to loop for far longer battle sequences and as such had to be more even.
>>3949463Even on a 8-bit chiptune FF1 is a lot catchier, there's an actual melody to hum/dance to. Ultima's loop is too repetitive and not catchy. Like, FF1 has two sections of the song, while Ultima just endlessly repeats itself.Orchestral arrangements don't sound good like >>3949440 if the base melody isn't good.
>>3949463I know those fucking noises. That's Apple II, not Amiga.
>>3949463UTTER NES SOUND DOMINATION
>>3949496unironically yes. sound on pc was so dependent on your soundboard it was basically a hellscape where games could sound totally different.
>>394944713 has fantastic battle music. Bad bait
>>3949463>we expect our battle sequences to be longer>so we'll make the music utterly forgettableDancing Mad is nearly 20 minutes long and the fight against Kefka can last much longer.
>>3949440>the way the music matches perfectly with the images at 1:30-1:33
>>3949442>different ideas on music theory between western and eastern RPGs.>>3949440nippons made catchy pop tunes. westerosi did ambient noise things. mostly.
>>3949836We all get the how, but why did westerosi make the inferior choice?
>>3949921western nerds didn't listen to enough cool muzak.
>>3949440Presentation is extremely important in Japan, so there was an extremely big focus on trying to deliver an exciting audiovisual experience rather than just relying on mechanics alone. That's not to say there's any excuse for CRPGs to be lacking in the soundtrack or art direction. There's probably also just some cultural difference in what people thought sounded good.
>>3949922Unironically yes. Computer nerds in the 90s were and likely still are moronic retards who don't care for arts like ballet even though The Rite of Spring inspired One Winged Angel.
>>3949440They do though
>>3950052Skyrim and Oblivion have awesome main themes and world exploration music, their OSTs are top tier, but strictly in the battle department they are sorely lacking.
>>3949440Because they didn't have Uematsu composing for them.
Mystic Quest had the best battle music of the Final Fantasy games.
