Their personalities were cookie cutter fantasy cliches and their quests didn't really involve anything dramatic happening at all. Even Mazzy manages to make rescuing her seem trite and unimportant. Kicking the trolls and Yuan Ti out of Nalia's family's castle and rescuing her from an arranged marriage is still treated like just another day and is only about as important to her as giving her a ride to the grocery store when she didn't feel like driving. Those companions deserve the label bland.

Also at some point during the late game I always make sure to nuke Megaton just to piss Jericho off even more and laugh at him becoming homeless and miserable. People say they hate Jericho but I get really sad if Jericho dies ingame. Yeah sure I can just recruit a stronger follower to replace Jericho, right? Except he won't be Jericho! I think Sky is the most whatever companion of Jade Empire. This coming mostly from the fact that, like ME's Kaidan, he's more of a straight man among more quirky teammates. Although I could see some people disliking Hou and Black Whirlwind more based on if their jokes land for them.
