What does /vrpg/ think of the Suikoden games and how do they compare to other PS1 era RPGs? The only ones I played was the second and third game many years ago so I might pick up that remaster released a while ago.

I love 1 and 2, 3 is kind of a sad failure but there's some good stuff in it. 4 was terrible at the time because the combination of loading times and encounter rate was torture, but if you're emulating now you can turbo smash those things and it's finishable. 5 was a self-conscious attempt to make Suikoden 2 again and it's got pretty high craftsmanship but it needed some more soul and attempts at innovation.

The missable characters over multiple games scares me away from this series
>>
>>3966670
They're generally pretty well designed for you to get them all. You mostly just do the obvious things like recruit any enemy that gives you the option.

I looked up a missable character video for Suikoden 1 just now to remind myself and it had three reasonably missable characters out of 108 if you're putting straightforward effort into recruiting every person with a portrait you see. I assume the later games do it less. If you take this advice Level up Pahn with your party and keep his weapon upgraded that leaves two.

I used to think S1 & 2 were really good, but after replaying them now I realize they aren't all that - they do have the niche of huge roster of characters that not many JRPGs have however.

S1 is full of literal hallway dungeons (S2 has this too, but to a slightly less extent), abrupt plot decisions, characters acting like NPCs during emotional cutscenes.. The certain character dying in the beginning didn't move me.
S2 is weirdly paced in some segments, the war minigames being literal RNGfests.. (although I liked the idea, just the execution is abysmal)
Also both games have very simplistic boss encounters..

>compare to other PSX era RPGs?
good story, mid combat mechanics, fun minigames. looks outdated compared the 3D polygonal trend of the PSX but it works.

It's interesting to me no other JRPG series really capitalized on Suikoden's formula. Hell, even among fan games you have something like Exit Fate.

every game has a detective character that gives you clues about where to find and how to recruit. it's only rare few instances of timed or narrow window of recruitment that are a bitch.

Will Star Leap save it?
>>
>>3967060
No, the whole Suikoden revival is some numbnuts at Konami that has the idea of Suikoden gacha shit in his head, and once that makes no money the plug will get pulled.

Is suikoden remaster 1,2 worth it? Played saga frontier 2 and must say the gameplay is lame, the concept is top tier.

Seems like $50 for worse looking backgrounds and worse QoL than emulators

>>3967233
Isn't the physical 12 bucks or so?

I was pretty certain I saw a physical copy for cheap, but it's around 50 online. Curious

>Is suikoden remaster 1,2 worth it?
For the most part yes. Some of the re-translation reeks of machine bullshit at times, but you get PSP QoL like diagonal movement. Asset upgrades are your classical hit or miss case. For me they generally air on now looking like RPG Maker tilesets.

Now that you say it. The difference between sprite and background or rather the disparity gives rpgm vibes. Well, as long as the rpgs are fun.

I like the addition of portraits there.

Tactics is a pretty good game

It partially redeems 4.

I certainly appreciated having a second go at t he Island Nations setting because even in four I rather liked it.
>>

It definitely redeems Lazlo for me
I hate him in 4 with his blank porcelain doll stare in every scene but hes a good character in Tactics. Hes really laid back but its because hes so competent and strong he knows he doesn't need to worry about problems, and its nice to see other characters recognize him as that good too.

Is saga frontier 2 or star ocean 1,2 remake good?
>>

>concept is top tier
The old saga games are all like that
>>

>worse QoL than emulators
lol yeah right
>>
>>3966614
I've only played Suikoden 2 and it was kamige. No other JRPG compares.
