Having the partners have their own HP is a big mechanical change that I’m a fan of. Action commands being available from the start also means that I can’t in good conscience put 64’s early game on the same level of enjoyment as ttyd’s regardless of anything else. They also did a lot more with the “stage” and the “paper” aspects for mechanics.

64 definitely has better map design - see backtracking complaints for ttyd as part of that- and that’s probably its biggest strength over ttyd. But like, they’re not all winners either? The desert is just tons of waste screens for example.

Not to say that 64 doesn’t have great music, but ttyd’s music is still a lot better - it’s just an exceptionally high quality OST

I have to admit I like that ttyd went a bit more out there (especially for a mario game) in terms of plot. It makes it feel a lot more distinct. The M&L games (and Super Paper Mario but let’s ignore that) go even further with that, of course, but there’s still a lot of fun stuff with TEC and the X-Nauts, and it’s nice having Bowser still be antagonistic and a big part of the game, not the end villain (it lets him be even more funny, which the game succeeds immensely at).
