What are your favorite crpgs?
>>
>>3981607

BG3 and its not even close.
>>
>>3981607
It is KOTOR2, the only CRPG where the devs gave a fuck about not making companions deadweight with shitty AI.
Many CRPGs would be better than it if their party members actually functioned. But that's a rarity in the genre.
>>
gothic 2.
>>

Baldurs Gate 3

>Baldurs Gate 3
This just makes me sad. You guys don’t even know what was taken from you. Games with non-binary feminine penises and vitiligo sliders are not only not dealbreakers for you, they’re contenders for the best game of all time. Grim.

crpgs = crap games?

Truly awful game.

MMCORPG
>>
>>3981607
Ie games are best, pillars is just a failed bg clone and kotc 1 and 2 are as clunky as it gets. Bg2 is the best crpg and it's not even close.

Not an rpg
>>
>>3981855
>Not an rpg
It is a cRPG. It just sucks, that's all.
>>
friendly reminder that while the ur definition of crpg is just a distinguishment from ttrpgs and rpgs in video form, the modern form is "game whose systems are too complex for console hardware and controls". this usage of the form started with games like the ultima ports for nes/snes. it has NEVER meant isometric ttrpg inspired games.
>>
>>3981868
>the ur definition of crpg is just a distinguishment from ttrpgs and rpgs in video form
Correct
>the modern form is "game whose systems are too complex for console hardware and controls"
Just about every single modern cRPG is ported to consoles and played with controllers. I think it's insane and retarded, but it's true.
>this usage of the form started with games like the ultima ports for nes/snes
Ultima is a cRPG, but not because it was ported to a console. It's "computer RPG" after all.
>it has NEVER meant isometric ttrpg inspired games
Agreed.
>>
>>3981873
>but not because it was ported to a console
no, you misunderstand me. crpg is used to distinguish a game like ultima 7 from the extremely simplified and less systems heavy ultima for snes. as opposed to define isometric rpgs inspired by ttrpgs
>>
BG2 and Planescape are my favorite CRPGs. BG3 is pretty clearly the best one, though.
>>
>>3981778
It is awful how other games pale in comparison, I do agree.
>>
>>3981958
No. It's very bad, character abilities as "collectible cards" with a really shitty worldbuilding, questing, characterization, and early 2000s everything is dull aesthetic slapped on.
I know you kids imprinted on it though, so you're incapable of objective judgement.
>>
>>3981757
Ironically, this post sincerely makes me pity you
>>
>>3981966
>objectivity
>dude it's all shitty!
You're not even worth these words I typed, bad faith faggot.
>>
>>3981977
Is character building not based on trading card games? Do you not have to scour the world with capture signets to collect them? Your inability to ignore my subjectivity proves your lack of objectivity.
>>
>>3981607
Sometimes I wish I was an orc so I didn't have to worry about things or people's opinions and I could just smash axe
>>
>>3981988
Protip: Most people aren't human, you really don't have to worry about their things or their opinions. In fact, they mostly exist as abstractions to you anyway, since your brain can't contain the numbers you interact with.
>>
>>3981972
I was super hyped for BG3, really enjoyed the early access. Felt bait-and-switched by the final product, and by the time I finished it, I went from
being excited and enthusiastic about it to being incredibly disappointed. It had the potential to be a great game, but it has so many flaws and stupid decisions that weigh it down to mediocrity.
It’s not the worst game of all time, and I can chalk up to subjective differences of opinion someone who says “yeah, X and Y and Z were dumb about it, but overall I liked it and have fun”, but imo anyone who heaps effusive praise on it or calls it a masterpiece or one of the best games of all time etc, is either a retard with bad taste, or they’re an impressionable kid and it’s their first cRPG.
>>
>>3981607
bg3 for the obvious reasons. in the genre, it's uncontested.

distant seconds go to fallout 2, kotor, wotr.
>underrail
the setting was pretty interesting.

>>3981765
unfortunately, this is largely correct
>>
>>3981986
yes, you find skill trainers or capture skills from bosses you kill, why is character growth tied to exploration a negative, let alone an objective one?
and yes it's basically a magic the gathering knockoff, but but realtime knockoff mtg is still enough to be the best skill system of any mmorpg
>>
>>3982122
>and yes it's basically a magic the gathering knockoff, but but realtime knockoff mtg is
not an RPG. You are not expressing a character fantasy or concept, you express a set of "hands" that you predetermine and play out on rotation. The game is made for and by people who fundamentally don't like RPGs and much of its design is meant to waste your time and keep you engaged. Like, why are there so many bad skills? Why are zones so large? These aren't game design elements, they are engagement goads.
>>
>>3981757
NTA, The woke shit does drag it down but it's still the most interactive RPG of all time, also best quality voice and motion acting, great tactics and builds.

>You guys don’t even know what was taken from you.
I've been playing these since the genre existed practically.

Feels like a lightning in a bottle thing but we'll see with Div3 I suppose.
>>
>>3982122
>and yes it's basically a magic the gathering knockoff, but but realtime knockoff mtg is still enough to be the best skill system of any mmorpg
Good taste anon, I wish they had kept developing in this direction instead of that GW2 standard MMO garbage. Still great memories of exploring the world when it first came out and collecting the rares to complete the builds I wanted to do. OG charr were the best new race I've (still!) seen in a long long time.
>>
>>3982163
>OG charr were the best new race
Ah, it's a furfag. Makes sense now.
>>
>>3982159
>not an RPG
how quick the mask falls!
>>
>>3982163
GW2 seemed like it was trying to go with a deck building skill system, but then bound a lot of the skills to weapons, added a weapon swap so it ended up being fixed skills on weapons and so the deck building is more limited.
ended up being an unsatisfying skill system.
They thought along the lines of "these skills are always used in sequence so what if we just make the sequence all be on 1 button so there's bar compression"
in the end instead of just being bar compression it's just a lazy autoattack chain that people don't even think about as being different skills.
>>
>>3982161
>Feels like a lightning in a bottle thing but we'll see with Div3 I suppose.
They're in an extraordinarily strong position to succeed. The same engine, and hopefully they retained the experienced core team that already succeeded in making one of the best RPGs of all time.

Compare to Bioware years ago when they were under EA and engine switches and losing talent.
>>
>>3982187
magic the gathering is not an rpg system.
you dispute this?
>>
>>3982217
>The same engine, and hopefully they retained the experienced core team
They re-used the same engine from DOS2 and managed to lose functionality from game to game, like removing useful info (weight, value) from in-world tooltips, and dropping the ability to sort inventory by type, instead just dumping it in a giant pile of hundreds of pieces of bullshit in your inventory. They attempted to add a search bar functionality (which is a great idea) but it was broken and barely worked at launch, when I played it.
>hopefully they retained the experienced core team
BG3 was made by 400 people spread across seven studios around the world.
>>
>>3982159
>You are not expressing a character fantasy or concept, you express a set of "hands" that you predetermine and play out on rotation
the skills are within thematic shared attributes like death magic or swordsmanship where you spec points from leveling, and which get augmented by your class choices (e.g. mesmers cast spells faster). if I make a tanky warrior who runs in to suck the blood from enemies and sacrifices health to make them weak, that's not a deathknight because why, because you lack imagination?
>much of its design is meant to waste your time and keep you engaged. Like, why are there so many bad skills? Why are zones so large
did this make sense to you when you wrote it? gw is a skinner box because of its boring skills and boring oversized zones? also it's clearly meant to have vanishingly few "bad skills" or treadmills
honestly you seem a little retarded. I dunno why you were telling that guy he couldn't objectively analyze things when you don't understand the game at all, like you bounced off the tutorial and that made you steaming mad
>>3982219
fallout new vegas has gunplay
fallout new vegas is doom
rly makes u think
next time I'll keep in mind that you're an autist who can't be talked to like a normal person, and write out "gw's skill system specifically is clearly derivative of magic the gathering"
>>
>>3982219
You shit up every thread on this board. If I met a narcissist like you in real life I would beat you until you stopped breathing.
>>
>>3982234
The skills are within "decks" that you assemble from capturing boss mobs, many of them are very shit or require interplay with a solved resource economy that drives a meta composition. This is card game design. You're just too stupid to grasp it.
>did this make sense to you when you wrote it
Yes.
>>3982254
Did i own you in some thread or are you just seeing patterns? You should try getting over that.

twisting yourself into knots flailing for a point. tell me your favorite trve and gvvd online rpg right now and I'll find meta comps for it. hell, offline ones too, any system can and will be optimized, and gw doesn't need anything close to "metas" to beat it. you're patting yourself on the back for getting confused at depth and choice in a game you haven't even played
>>

I truly think that Neverwinter Nights 1, with all its expansions and multiplayer a good group of committed role players, is one of the best gaming experiences you can have. Many underrated hidden gem modules and modifications exist made from 20+ years ago to just a couple weeks ago, on various websites and forums, just waiting to be downloaded.
