I loved the visuals but the story and combat disappointed me.

Same, really. Every encounter ends up feeling the same once you work out your tactics, and given the gap between the good options and everything else as far as builds go, you won't have too much variety in those between playthroughs either.
The story almost goes somewhere, but is plagued with all the tired bullshit of any game - sorry, any writing at all that calls itself "lovecraftian", and that includes the ending, which I more or less called the second I saw that word in the description. And which, yet again, despite smug assurances from idiots, is nothing even tonally like the stories Lovecraft has written, and instead based entirely in the grand fabrication people who have never actually read him manufactured based on pure vibes, but it seems direct interaction with his works is anathema to his anyone who uses that fucking term.

Personally the entire first and second act being made completely meaningless by the conclusion of the story just pissed me off. I thought the story powerscaled itself too much.

Really?

I have a softspot for old style pixel visuals. The fact the game included a CRT filter as well in settings to run on a CRT monitor as well was nice.

Me I'm just viscerally put off by stories that smugly declare they are indeed entirely pointless because no events that took place ever had any chance of affecting literally anything, and not one person in the world will care they took place at all.
It's like reading a book only to have the back cover fitted with a device that sprays rancid piss onto you, then takes a photo and posts it on your social media labeled "fell for it again award".
And then seeing people defend it as actually brilliant and you just don't get it man.

That describes every WRPG ever made except Morrowind which has good gameplay. The genre is heavily reliant on looks and vibes instead of gameplay or telling a compelling story.

Ah, you like the fake retro aesthetic and bad shaders.

I knew the game was gonna be shit when a random flashback appeared and I was level 2 in it

I was hoping it by how the flashback was going that it would be a more, time is stuck in a loop and you have to figure out how to break the loop. But its just the loop continues on forever.
