I should add that it was a sign of the times. This was when increasingly many games was getting always-online requirements and piecemeal monetization, so the reaction towards D3, the sequel to a beloved game, getting this treatment was very hostile. It was, at least at first, also just plain worse than D2 in every way on top of frequently having connection issues.

I played both for the first time in recent years, but I went in order of release starting with Diablo 1.

best in the series but least amount of content and qol, more of a one and done game unlike whatever the genre it created devolved into

Flawed, unbalanced, frustrating and slow but somehow still the best game in its genre overall.
It took me several tries to get into it and finally beat the game on hell but once you do and you learn mechanics more it's like crack cocaine. It's still simple mechanically compared to what comes after, but it has enormous variety if you don't care about meta builds. Best classes in terms of vibe too. I have by far the most hours in it and I don't think I'll be done anytime soon

eh it's ok but it's a very casualized experience, in Diablo 2 you wanted several things that improved your character in various ways but not all items had everything so you had to compromise and decide which is more important to you know and so on, in Diablo 3 everything scales with weapon damage and the different stats etc seem to be purely cosmetic, you always want number up and all items give the same stats
instead of kino gothic horror of Diablo 1 or dark low fantasy globe trotting adventure of Diablo 2 you get WoW: the ARPG with shiny shit and cartoonish proportions everywhere
it's also always online, including the "solo" characters
unlike Diablo 2 where you could have as many skills as you wanted you can only use 6 and when you level up everything is pre-chosen for you, you just need to decide what skill you want to use and you sometimes unlock new ones or modifiers for it
It's still fun to blast a bunch of shit with no cognitive functions involved but it doesn't give you the same high/ obsession because nothing matters as much as it did in D2 where a good drop could radically alter your build and performance

I hate the WC3 Orc rewrite which also made it's way into WoW. That shit is garbage. They go from violent alien killing machines to le poor oppressed green men. Lord Garithos' only mistake was that he let his guard down around an Elf.
