Did any other RPGs ever have level design as creative as the first Kingdom Hearts? Tons of platforming, secrets, riddles, puzzles etc
>>3985707No and the downgrade in level design from the first installment has never been resolved
>>3985710I always heard Mario RPG was the inspiration for it, so I went and played the game. Pretty fun, but it's no KH1. Stuff like Wonderland and Agrabah are some peak RPG level design
>>3985707Why were the levels better? Been awhile. I remember that kh2 had good moments, but was inferior to kh1. Shame that kh was used to milk fans for 2 decades.
>>3985955KH1 has a weird level design philosophy where despite being an action game, half the content of every level is random stuff like riddles, trinities, platforming challenges, (enemy) puzzle challenges like white mushrooms, and shenmue-style "find the correct guy to talk to" stuff like in shenmue.KH2 went the complete opposite direction by turning every level into a big combat arena. There are a handful of levels in KH2 like Agrabah and Hollow Bastion that have some of this stuff but nowhere near the amount it was in KH1.
>>3986106That´s probably because the original KH was trying to keep mechanics associated to Disney games (but translated to 3D). You know, stuff like Mickey castle of illusions or the adventures of Chip & Dale which were sidescrollers. Back then it was probably conceived as one of those collab fanservice games... I don´t think anyone expected it to become so big that it could rival FF in popularity, they just struck gold. And then ruined it by releasing tons of subpar games as it´s customary
