I just got into this game a few days ago and so far it's very good. it satisfies my XCOM 2 craving. I've never seen this game mentioned on here, how's the rest of the game? it has some funny racist references I've noticed sp far
>>
I didn’t care for it. It opens with a trigger warning and the calibers of half the guns are wrong. I didn’t like nu-XCOM either.
>t. grew up playing the first two X-COMs and JA2
>>
>>1963170
my only gripe so far is the lack of melee options/weapons. I would love to see this game or something similar to it that has some kind of samurai swords, e.g. Katanas or Wakisashis

its fine, enjoy

arent melee weapons super op? i played early game so far and Igor kills 3 people alone while all others are useless

Does it have a 1.13 mod yet? If not, I continue playing JA2 whenever the mood comes.

not to my knowledge but it's still great regardless

The game opens up in story, difficulty and complexity once a certain event is triggered, it can appear quite simple and "solved" until then but it still is challenging for a first playthrough. If you're experienced in the genre you'd maybe need to bump it up to the difficulty right above normal, I wouldn't go any further than that because the way difficulty levels work is that it gives increasing free moves to enemy units making them bumrush you from across the map, increasing the need for stealth elims. Speaking of which they're not as strong as they were on release, they also nerfed the quick prism scope which is a shame.
Ever since they've added Bobby Ray's, running several squads isn't as much of a pain in the ass since you can buy ammo even if the stock rotation is quite slow.

In general depending on what you enjoyed about the series in the past it's either just an okay sequel or an excellent one, it still retains what I loved about it which is squad based tactics as a lovable ragtag band of mercs, two strategic layers and 80s/90s action movie influences. Some things are unfortunately streamlined and others are more fleshed out like the interactions with the locals.
>>
I thought the game was great, but some people here bitch about it. I'm on my 5th or 6th vanilla playthrough and still enjoying it and finding new stuff and trying out different merc combos and tactics. My first playthrough I wound up taking the maximum amount of mercs and regretting it because it spreads the XP too thin. It's way more fun to me to just have one squad that synergizes well and then a back up squad of the free guys to hold terrain and train militia and each other. A few people on here seem to really dislike it but I think it holds up to ja2 and expands on what made that game great. One thing I think its missing is a way to perform simultaneous attacks on multiple targets with different mercs at the same time, it would be nice if that got patched in but I think the devs said they weren't going to be updating it anymore. Anyway it's the most fun I've had with any game released in about 10 years so I'm happy.
>>
>>1969086
Yes the devs are done with the game, THQ Nordiq (Embracer) owns the IP and Haemimont Games were only contracted to work on it. Still they did an amazing job with the ressources they were given.
They've recently been purchased by Paradox.
>>
>>1969205
Yeah when they announced it I was expecting a total pos cash grab. I wound up really Impressed with how good the game was on its own but also with how faithful they were to the vibe of the originals. I was really expecting Another turd like back in action, so I hope they keep hiedmont involved somehow with whatever comes next.
>>
>>1970349
Honestly I'm content with the franchise being laid to rest, while I enjoyed JA3 (favourite game of 2023) I don't think lightning will strike twice at the same place. They also called back Ian Currie for JA3 and it's doubtful he will still want (or be able) to participate to a 4th game.
There's other concerns like flanderization of mercs and some mechanics getting shelved, even if I believe things like Bobby Ray's not making it in on release were mainly due to budget and time constraints.

However, since we can't have nice things stay nice forever, I fully expect THQ Nordiq under Embracer to dig up the series' corpse for a last act of necromancy. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.

I would take something as simple as higher quality models for mercs and better weapon rigging (mercs have foregrips rest in their palm, looks retarded). >a way to perform simultaneous attacks on multiple targets with different mercs at the same time
You can actually sorta already do this, but one has to be a melee stealth kill and the other a ranged attack. Set up the melee kill and start moving toward your target. When he's about 1-2 tiles away, pause and set up a shot from the ranged merc. Both should go off simultaneously. Works wonders for paired up enemies. Shadow and Mouse make a great duo for this.

>>1982827
The Glock 18s. Vicki's talent makes them +7 damage per bullet with the burst fire. Otherwise Desert Eagles.
>>
>>1983619
>>1969086
You can do 2 stealth attacks even with ranged mercs as long as you're quick about it. Pause the game, aim the attack with the first merc, then order the shot which unpauses the game and quickly select the other merc, hit 1 to start aiming and rapidly right click to aim however many times you want then left click. It requires fast timing, but it's doable. It also makes it so that only one of them starts combat with some AP spent.

Good team, Thor is a bit on the expensive side but it'll be fine if you're efficient. You will be getting a cash injection soon-ish, after that you'll have to loot diamond briefcases or capture mines but unless you fuck around you won't be in the red.

>>
>>1988644
hes free but in theory he will always be inferior to mercs cause they dont let you pick special skill
>>
>>1988647
That's easily offset by the fully customizable stats. Max out leadership and wisdom and you have solved the issue where no one brings affordable high leadership cheaper than Raider who's not exactly cheap, and it also makes your IMP able to easily train any stat due to high wisdom.

One of my only complaints with the game is the roster (from a statistical standpoint--I enjoy them as characters). The lower tier mercs are far too good (Barry and Livewire somehow being both the best and cheapest in their specialties), and outside of a few ringers like Ivan, Vicki, or Shadow there's not much incentive to ever trade up to the higher tier mercs who are usually far more expensive and with questionable Perk selections.
>>
>>1992777
I've noticed that training mercs also seems to be much faster in 3 than in 2, and you don't really get much of a penalty for idling compared to 2 where loyalty drops fast and the helicopter guy stops helping, so grabbing cheap high wisdom mercs early on is a great investment. I picked Barry, Livewire and MD in my first run without even being very aware of these systems and they all turned out great in the end.

Are are there any good gameplay mods for this? I'd be fine if I could just scale the amount of enemies myself or something. I tried RATO but it was just clumsier to play because I had to remember to constantly assume firing stances and manually cock Tex's revolvers.
I shamelessly use mods to let me make however big squads and hire however many mercs I please (because they're so much fun) but it's sorta difficult to balance it.

So after playing it recently and going to JA2 for comparison i think its ok game but JA3 tone feels way off. The humor, MERCs using civilian clothing and African setting is just not it. Feels like a pastiche of a previous title, i never felt im doing serious military operation against trained soldiers but instead fictional setting where I fight hordes of stupid nogs with red face-paint, voodoo masks and prosthetic legs. Nonsense weapon upgrade system was another thing which it felt very gamey and took away shred of realism i had left everytime i had to interact with it.

I swear, people just willfully misremember JA2 as Hamburger Hill when it was Commando. Nobody in JA2 wears a uniform! You fight Alabama rednecks and aliens! You make an X-Ray Scope out of a Game Boy!
>>
>>2004780
The patrols you fight are portrayed as actual soldiers, for me low res grey shirts, yellow shirts looked way more serious than random rednecks(which you also meet and fight). You even conduct assaults on actual military bases and other facilities filled to professionals. 95% of upgrades you used were attachments you hat to find or buy not some abstracted crafting system where random chip+scrap makes a thermal scope.

easily the best of the many jagged alliance 2 sequels. you should play jagged alliance 2 to learn why so many different companies have tried to make a game that builds on its legacy. the game that sirtech made in the late 90s is easily the best tactical rpg ever made. jagged alliance 3 is the only one that is good enough that it doesnt feel like an insult to the game that it is inspired by
>>
>>2004780
thats kinda what made a lot of tactical video games that were otherwise good games inferior to jagged alliance, they failed to create memorable characters that had and could develop relationships with each other. what other tactical video game even has anything that resembles the carl weathers arnold schwarzenegger handshake from predator? it adds so much to the game

Just started a 2nd playthru and now remember some things I hated about it. For instance, modding weapons. In my experience it fails at LEAST half the time and not only do you not get the mod but it also degrades the weapon. Even if your mech is 85 or higher! Seriously made me not want to mod weapons at all. Just retarded IMO. Also, trying to find the "sweet spot" to click when looting or talking to NPC's can drive you fucking mad. Overall though, I really liked the game play, story and music. 7/10

Restarted the game half way because it become so easy it was too boring to progress. Next run maxed difficulty + added option for accuracy penalty when wounded it seemed better at first but now again im at the point i just stealth snipe everything with barely any damage taken (the sneaking in open field during day light next to enemy is so fucking retarded i have no idea how that got past initial patches). The biggest issue with this game besides horrible balance, bad ai, low difficulty in theory COULD be fixed with mods(sadly wont happen cause game and its modding scene is dead) is engagement range, you are basically in face of enemy soldiers from the start of battle, with specific perks i could run from one side of the map to other in one turn, it really hurts tactical choices and gameplay variety.

I had my suspicions about this game, but this confirmed it. Just a bunch of faggy redditors made this game, what a fucking joke and pile of garbage. Also the developers did never play the first two games, they weren't parodies of the 80ies and 90ies. this was my main complain since day 1 and Im surprised nobody did a rebalance/ overhaul mod for merc stats and perks
>>
Just started playing. Is there anything, say, keeping me sitting around and spending the first month training recruit mercs? Is there some hidden time limit beyond income?
>>
>>2072694
Trying to avoid spoilers: about 38 days after you secure your first mine (there are a couple of other triggers, but you won't hit them from sitting around) an Event will trigger, and a specific Squad will advance toward a Location. If you do not intercept this Squad before it reaches the Location, you will not be able to complete the Event. If you do intercept the Squad, you can go the the Location later to complete the Event at your leisure (other random squads can enter the Location without affecting the Event, only the one specific Squad matters).

There are a couple of time-sensitive quests, but the timer doesn't start until you get the quests. There's also a Second Event, but it's related to the first Event and overall game progress, not strictly time.
>>
>>1971161
Seconding this. The hate it gets is completely undeserved. I dare say it's much better than JA2 imo.
>>
>>2072748
As a final question, does your I.M.P merc get anything unique during the course of the game? After comparing to the merc lineup, it seems like the only thing they have going for them over the mercs is being able to take Hand-to-Hand and Martial Artist at the same time, being able to take Stealthy and Throwing at the same time, or being a dedicated trainer/leadership character.
>>
>>2072903
Right, the IMP doesn't get anything unique, but it sounds like you've already figured out its best uses: Teacher/Leadership (honestly your best bet) or unique Trait combos (Auto Weapons and Heavy Weapons is another good one). Even though the IMP is completely customizable, most other roles are already done better by an existing merc (your sneaking IMP will never be as good as Blood or Shadow, your mechanic IMP will never be as good as Livewire or Vicki, etc). Also remember that after the initial fee, the IMP costs no further salary, which is always nice but especially helpful early on.

Does Mission Impossible hand enemies an absurd amount of free stats or something? I keep fucking up because enemies end up doing things that I don't expect them to be able to do. Like this motherfucker sprinted from here to here, spotted Barry and Fox (they were hiding after killing the Brute), and this motherfucker still had enough AP to chuck a grenade at them.

Is it worth getting someone with high STR? I already encountered 2 places with STR checks near first town after tutorial island, my mercs are too weak for it - Fox, Mouse, Livewire, Barry and IMP with 62STR
>>
>>2076457
I'd say it's worth it for the inventory space alone. My 89 strength IMP has the one more slot than do combined Fox, Mouse, and Livewire combined out of the box. Melee is also surprisingly good once you get some movement perks.

As a side note: I do find the perk layout for the stat to be a bit bizarre though. I don't understand why Ironclad doesn't apply also to cumbersome weapons since those are the guys you'd be putting in heavy armor to begin with. Someone who wants to take Collateral Damage is going to have to eat shit and take two perks that they'll probably never use.
>>
>>2077199
I need to fill the final gap, thought about getting a psycho as well, maybe Nails - he has the perk and high STR as well and he likes Fox (well, who doesn't).
Also I heard militia is more of a waste of time in this game compared to ja2, is it true?
>>
>>2076457
I don't think I've ever kept a high-STR merc just to have high STR, but many good ones do have it anyway. I do remember early on hiring Grizzly for a few days just so he could lift that rock on the West coast though. Depending on your income/time situation, you can also hire Wolf for a couple weeks and have him train everyone in STR.
>>
Huh, Trick Shot ended up being a FAR better than I expected it to be. Unlike normal status effects, the status effects from it still fully apply on grazes.
>>2077255
My opinion is still tentative because I haven't finished the game, but they seem OK. Even Elites drop like flies sometimes, but having even a single medicore merc on the tile with them seems to drastically increase their efficacy and reduce their loses in auto resolves.

I'm probably missing something but after every fight most if not all my team is wounded and it takes a lot of time (almost whole day) and medicine to heal. Every wound cost like 5 medicine and mercs have several of them, while you can find 2-4 medicine from 1 bush.
Next location has 14 enemies in a single squad, so it's safely to assume it will be another day and 60 medicine to heal everyone.
>>
>>2079109
give your best marksman a silenced sniper rifle and try to not get shot next time retard

Mouse should really be popping heads from half-way across the map and taking out patrols one by one before they can respond
>>
>>2079109
You have Fox, Mouse, and Livewire's PDA, so you should be banging out stealth kills left and right even if you're playing Ironman. Keep in mind that Fox's unique trait causes enemies to be surprised rather than alerted when she starts combat and refunds the cost of her opening attack. So you could, for example, have her 3 aim snipe one guy, 3 aim SNIPE another, then have a nearby stealthed Mouse knife or snipe the remaining guy when her runs for cover to clear out a group of three silently.

Both Fox and Mouse start with ass marksmanshop, so they aren't going to do great in straight up firefights, but their high-ass base dex is enough to allow them to use rifles decently out the box despite it as long as they're aiming, and both will almost never miss in melee or with throwing knives. Mouse especially can make a fantastic stealth+melee or stealth+shotgunner for the longhaul if you're willing to eventually pump up her strength at some point since she comes with solid health, and near capped agility and dex right out the gate.
>>
>>2079109
If you're still on Tutorial Island then you're unironically in the hardest stretch of the game due to inexperienced mercs with bad weapons. Good advice about using cover and sniper rifles probably won't help yet. Use Barry's grenades on groups, then disregard cover and basic logic and use Mobile Shot with any mercs with Hi-Powers to run in and shoot any survivors in the chest at point blank range, and then shoot them again if they're still alive due to its low AP cost. Hood rat resources require hood rat solutions.

Also that Jill portrait actually fits in surprisingly well.

Thanks for the advices. I love tactical games but kinda struggling with them at the same time, I remember in JA2 it was pretty hard at times as well, can't fathom how people ironman games like these.
Livewire maphack is really nice, but here on mainland I wasn't lucky with intel yet, mostly fought without it, I guess intel was randomly chosen for other adjacent sectors.
I've got that silenced rifle in adjacent sector, gave it to Fox at first, but she can't land a headshot reliably at all and without it shot isn't lethal, so I gave it to IMP.
Barry's grenades are a lifesaver, wish I had hired him from the get go, my squad of 4 almost died against legion counterattack to Ernie, I encountered 8 enemies at the sector with underground bunker. Got Barry right after it to handle mines on the beach, his grenades could have made short work of the legion.

Is building destruction in it like Silent Storm?
Comparing it to 1.13, one thing I really liked about 1.13 was how between all the gear and shit and the actual personalities of the mercs, you could do full on proper builds.
Is JA3 the same (will use mods if neede)
Is proper stealth a thing as in, on par with say the Commandos series or is it more like 'use it to get the first 2 soldiers killed since everyone will rush you then
With buildings, can you do the same shit in 1.13 like supress the main door and blow a wall off and shoot them then?
Is the AI actually challenging (again ok with mods)
>>
>>2079371
Yeah, I have no idea how they can be so accurate in full auto from half of the map. It seems you're either stealthily kill everyone or get a lot of wounds or potentially deaths.
>>
>>2079377
Imagine further simplified low budget nucom with tiny maps and very few different guns but with a ja coat of paint and you'll have a pretty good idea what this game is.
>>
>>2079377
destruction is pretty good, you can blow up walls and floors and if your gun is strong enough you can just ignore cover and blast enemies with a .50 cal through a wall
stealth is in the game and as broken as you imagine, you can wipe entire maps without starting an alarm and even if the alarm is triggered as long as you get out of sight you can hide again and if they dont find you, you reenter the free roam
the AI is ok but hardly challenging, its a turn based game after all
>>
>>2079377
You can do a good amount of destruction. At least three times in my playthrough my machine gunner missed someone but still got the kill because they destroyed the roof/platform they were standing on instead, and blowing up walls with pipe bombs and presetup overwatch has been a consistent strategy of mine.
Like the other anon said, stealth can be very comical at times. Like shanking someone from like 20 feet away in plain daylight and his buddy just going "must have been the wind" because it's right outside his vision cone. Apparently, the patter of African rain is also enough to suppress the sound of someone getting chopped in half by AK full auto fire right outside a populated building.
It's decently challenging but nothing particularly extreme. I'm playing blind Ironman on the max base difficulty setting and am doing fine. I've lost 5 mercs so far. One on Ernie island while I was still figuring things out, one to a shotgunner with revenge, one to Nazi super soldiers, and two during a big spoiler plot event that I wasn't prepared for.
>>
>>2079170
>Livewire maphack is really nice, but here on mainland I wasn't lucky with intel yet, mostly fought without it, I guess intel was randomly chosen for other adjacent sectors.
If you weren't aware, you can gain intel in your current sector or up to two sectors away by using the Scouting operations from the map. If anything this is better than getting intel from hacking since if you already have all intel within range you're guaranteed to get money from hacking.
>>
>>2080240
Thanks, I completely forgot about it. But the thing is I heard there's a time limit of 38 days for some major story event, and I already waste a lot of time for healing, Livewire also has to spend time on fixing weapons but she has the highest wisdom for scouting.

What do you get from Bobby in early game? I had to order ammo for those gewehr rifles because I ran out of it, but it seems he doesn't have anything useful yet.
>>
>>2086109
Very early on, probably nothing because I spent way too much money hiring Shadow too early. But once I get stabilized (probably after taking Pantagruel and Fleatown), mainly I just buy as much ammo (both kinds of 7.62 and maybe 5.56 if I get an early AUG or Minimi) and spare parts as I can, along with any skill magazines. If my looting has been particularly unlucky I might snag a Dragunov or a Winchester.

>>2081889
I was gonna say it'd probably be easier to just loot one, but it turns out an AUG is actually tier 3 loot, which is crazy since that's the same tier you can get PSG1s.

>>
>>2087802
I'm pretty sure he just forgot to put the Galil in the list. In my looting experience, it seems to be tier 4. IMO it's probably the best general purpose assault rifle with that huge crit chance, 2nd best damage, and range so good you can put a short barrel on it and it's still got better range than most other assault rifles.

How do I play JA2 at a modern resolution without everything looking tiny?
>>
>>2089952
set internal resolution to half your full resolution, then full screen the game

For example, if you have a 1080p monitor, you want the in-game res to be 960x540 and scaling set to pixel perfect centered. This is doable from the Stracciatella launcher options

Man, I don't. Every half-baked joke in the game reminds me of when I completed a homework assignment 10 minutes before it was due. I feel bad for him.

I do, I was there. Today I got to the dump in Port Cacao. There was a cock fight there. A guy said, "my cock is bigger than your cock." I get it. He's talking about his dick. Okay.

After that, I had a conversation with some character, I don't remember who. Igor said something about vodka. Okay. I click through a few more dialogue choices. Igor said something else about vodka.

Later on, I saw a conversation between Wolf and Fox. Wolf said they should hunt for nuts in the forest. Fox said maybe they'll find melons too. Wolf said he might have the right tool for the job. Okay.

I get it. These are all jokes, but none of them are actually funny. They're low hanging fruit that a second grader could come up with.

Conversely, I remember cracking the fuck up back in 1996 or whatever when I recruited Ivan and Cyrillic text spewed all over the screen. It was a real gotcha because I didn't expect it at all. "Why is this insanely good merc so cheap? Oh - that's why."

At no point have I been blindsided by a joke. Every joke in the game is this boilerplate, "I need to write a joke here because jokes go here." Every joke is a retreat of a joke that they'd previously told, which originated somewhere else anyway. It makes me sad for the people who had to churn this shit out, because it must have been soul crushing.

Mouse's AIM bio offers dueling speculation that their relationship is fractured or that Stella specifically tasked Mouse with getting back into the merc game to reestablish contacts for an unknown purpose. It's a shame we'll probably never get any resolution.

I hoped we'd get some sort of iterative sequel using the same engine and general gameplay but with a new setting, more mercs and other improvements, given that that's what the devs had done with Tropico prior. Evidently there was supposed to be some sort of DLC but the whole shitshow with THQ/Embracer led that to being quietly canceled and then of course the devs had to go get bought out by Paradox, so that's that.
