i haven't followed a game in development in probably a decade, but did the meaning of the term roadmap change or was it never what i thought it was? to me a road "map" was something that set out a specific timeframe for specific things to happen, the "map" part implying specificity.when i look at this shit, all i see is, first column already done, second column started work on but no timeframe for completion, third column, haven't started work on but would ideally like to do at some point. and seeing a second campaign in that third column makes me think that the current campaign won't tell a complete story, it'll end in a cliffhanger which is unlikely to get resolved judging by the way the game is going, so why even bother? before i saw that i might have been fooled into thinking they were doing a red alert thing where each faction campaign just resolves the conflict from the faction's perspective, instead of selling me a third of a campaign every couple of years.but let's be real, this game doesn't have two more years of life and that second campaign will never start development, let alone get released.

Just played a couple of matches. Actually interesting, dynamic maps? Objectives beyond simply destroying opponent's base? Likeable designs, original setting? ANY DIFFERENCE AT ALL from sc2? Stormgate doesn't fucking do any of this, they just took the 25+ year old blizzard rts formula and managed to make every aspect worse than in a 15 year old game. Current stormgate gameplay can be replicated in a day in sc map editor. Why the fuck do tier 1 human units have lances? What kind of high-tech weapon is this? Ah yes, it's because otherwise it would resemble sc2 way too much, great job bringing originality to the game. Otherwise feels like sc with perturbed numbers. Do you guys like it?
>>2116951>Human Vanguard>Infernal Host>Celestial ArmadaI can't find the word that I'm looking for to describe this phenomenon but it's something you get a lot in modern media. >>2120358It really doesn't and that's not even what was wrong with it. It's part of the reason why the game never took off because of just insane design choices they could have easily fixed and never did for no reason.
>>2120224it is the devs' deliberate choice to use TAA instead of FXAAit is the devs' deliberate choice to set their color palette to low contrast
Even as a compfag I think they should stop making rts with multiplayer for like 10-15 years or something.Nobody can compete with SC2 for comp and nobody can compete with both SC2 and Aoe2 DE for casual multiplayer. In order for a game to even succeed as a multiplayer title you have to get people to like the game itself, then maybe you convert a small portion of those players to playing online and from those online players you get a small portion of competitive/e-sports types. Trying to get that result from the beginning is a waste of time. Any indie or AA who are still willing to make an RTS should just not even have anything except a campaign and skirmish, and maybe co-op. Though I feel if you go for co-op it has to either just skirmish with friends or a full on progression system that can compete with SC2 co-op commanders and nothing in between.
>>2114763>Graphics don't matter!
>>2120696They don't, visual design does matter. That's why Runescape classic is hitting new peaks after decades while Unreal engine 5 games are failing left and right. That image is more about how these projects worth millions can't do any better than some indie game.
>>2120468>IMMORTAL: Gates of PyreThis could be the same as a WC 1. The first in a series just has to keep a fanbase with good memorable gameplay. >>2121418That game is doing the same model as Stormgate where mp/skirmish is free and campaign is paid, which is fine I guess for most games but RTS players see that and just think it's a multiplayer game. Also the lore might have the problem of old Warhammer where the factions are detailed but stagnant as nothing significant actually happens to shake up the setting.

It's sad that they cannot realize that the 15 to 25 year old games they are emulating from are boring and they cannot do something new.
SG has futureJust a few points about SG progress.I've been around SC2 since WoL beta and I noticed a few things people are unfair with:Macro aspect: SG immidiatelly started as a macro type rts. We can all remember WOL 4gate, 6 pool rushes and short maps where you can't expand properly. Zerg were, as a race, completely unplayable, we had GomTvT GSL's, prominent zergs threatened to switch races or quit (Dimaga for example). HotS wasn't much better, 2 base allins and timings like PartinG's 7gate robo sentry immortal allins were unbeatable or swarm host vs swarm host sleepfests.Support:Community kept playing and watching boring 4gate vs unsaturated 2 base zerg or similar for years. No one particulary complained because Blizzard was patching more or less regulary.3. Community:Was together and optimisic and withheld to have LotV released as a modern day macro oriented rts, followed streams, had cups and all.Are we all just ruthless towards FGS or what? Is game buggy? Yes Have they released EA too early? Yes Campaign was unpolished? Yes Lack of AT or multiplayer mods? Yes Races aren't finished? Yes Playing three maps suck? YesBUT if they had time Blizzard had (WoL beta to LotV), 3 years, we might have SC2 replacement as a Esport and a good 2v2, 3v3 modes and a solid campaign. We just need to stop thrashing them for start despite being angry (justified)Cheers
man nevergaters are out in force today
>>2121524>We just need to stop thrashing them for start despite being angryStop telling people what is cool or not cool. Pirate Software did this and deserved his dog pile especially after playing WoW instead of finishing his Kickstarter funded game.In fact, stop telling them what think. Respect your players and their time.If you hate your customer it shows in your product. If you duhumanize your customer you can rip them off or kill them irl. It is easy to justify.FG took funds and failed to deliver a promised product, hence the scam warnings are relevant.I think IMMORTAL's steam vid was good enough for a 2nd look. The Arcanum faction looks like nerd chic to me, maybe it's the faction names. But maybe people will look at my crazed rantings and make up their own minds. If they want to dog pile Stormgate, they can because they were told what to think. The players can decide for themselves whats cool and fun. They are smart and informed. Why is this a thing with ex Blizzard employees?
>>2121530>Why is this a thing with ex Blizzard employees?ego
a lot of people shat on stormgates humans vs demons vs aliens/angels setting for being generic. im wondering if its actually a problem with the setting or its really just because they did such a shit job of it?to me it seems like humans vs demons vs angels could be kino if it was done right stylistically
>>2121539yeah i wouldn't mind it if it was interesting.based on what i've seen i actually would have picked up shartgate if it had all three campaigns done. but i'm not interested in playing the teaser campaign. i think celestials don't even properly appear in this right?
>>2121497>selling usually free content thinkingeh no, campaign is expected to be paywalled because voice acting and cinematics are expensive. Also if you make that free, they will just play it and then uninstall. Makes absolutely no sense to give that part away for free. With free mp you can at least sell skins or whatever, and lowering the barrier to entry is important when the main content is other players.
>>2121539It could have been done well but they just dropped the ball. Why are the humans the generic blue space guys when they lost Earth? Shouldn't they have a more ragtag or survivalist appearance?
>>2114763I fucking hate WC-styled graphics so much, they are a fucking cancer, they ruined RA3, they ruined EE3, they ruined DoW3, I want to stomp the face of any faggot saying it was because le funny, they are the reason why I did not bother with Tempest Rising (the fact they had the temerity to make one of their factions high tier unit a literall ball makes my blood boil).I wish Act of Aggression had succeeded, Eugen Systems is about the only company who knows how to deal with graphics.>But they are real lifeYes, exactly, they base all their stuff IRL, which is what I want, I want to feel like an actual general commanding an army, not some dumbass playing with virtual children toys.
For comparison, a barely changed remaster of Dawn of War just sold 150k copies in its first day and passed 17k concurrent players.
>>2112529The numbers for stormgate are fine. "Tim M" doesn't know what he's talking about. I've run the numbers myself, they are sufficient. 300 players concurrently equates to about 20,000 unique players per day. Even being extremely conservative and saying that only 75% of those players buy $20 from the in game store. That is $300,000 in revenue per day, and about 10M in revenue per month. They have nothing to worry about.

But no, they made people look like fortnite characters, demons might as well just be random 3d monster models and celestials are literally random shapes. It wasn't designed with top-down view in mind. Homm for example had 7 or 8 fantasy fractions and they seemed different enough design-wise.
>>2121539It could have been good, or at least look good if the style was more grim like Diablo 1/2, but then compfags who didn't play the game anyway, lmao would complain there is no visibility and investors would say this is not what modern audience plays

100% anyone calling them scam artists needs mental help. The games good they want to make it better have clearly been doing so since a year ago. They wanted to make the next great rts have they nailed it yet no, but to say they aren’t trying and aren’t doing so in good faith I find pretty disgusting
>>2123109>how did we scam kickstarter backers by ninja editing???
>>2123111>100% anyone calling them scam artists needs mental help. That's why its insulting. Palworld ripped off Pokemon. Did Palword rip off its player base? No. Nintendo will learn that they should have given Pocket Pair the rights to make a Pokemon game. It would have been cheaper and easier to let them make Pokemon. Nintendo can afford the lawsuits, but they ignored players and competitors got their audience while they stared at money on the table their intellectual property collecting dust.Stormgate didn't even attempt to rip off a DOOM space marine faction with DOOM guy as a commander. They attempted to clone SC 2 and did it so poorly at their players expense. Palworld is still in early access with a 95% review rating on Steam. Reviews are saying they had customers paying twice, instead of making Blizzard sue them and regretting not giving them a license to make WC4 or SC 3. They chose to fake reviews because taking protoss from Activision until they were told to stop was too scary. We know they lie. We know they scam. Look who they chose to target. Palworld's steam forums don't look anything like Stormgate's right now.

>>2125695The mechanics are the least important thing actually. Total trash games blow up because they're creative and fun and lots of players to spread the word about them. Players will overlook bugs or broken stuff or missing mechanics when the game is fun and soulful, the world is enjoyable, and it has good characters in a nice campaign>Campaign, creativity, world, vision, player countThese are all the most critical things to the success of a game. Bad pathfinding or UI doesn't actually matter, brood war has both of those and it's the best game in the RTS genre.

>>2125979it's also pretty funny that the single time the game actually managed to achieve significant improvements is when they were torn a new asshole at early access and they redesigned most of it from ground up. they managed to do a lot in a pretty short time too. that only happened because for once they weren't just taking feedback from their discord sycophants.who knows, maybe if there was someone around to kick their asses every step of the way, they might have actually released a decent, interesting game worth playing like universe at war, the kind of game that people reminisce about decades later.

Not a peep about his butt buddies from blizzard paying themselves 250k/year salaries, instead saying that paying developers was a huge factor in burning through the money. He and the other grifter Tim paid themselves at least a million dollars salary throughout stormgate's development, but not a peep about that. And for what? The "quality"? >>2126708If they sell their engine like Unreal, where game makers only pay a percentage if the gross is over a milllion dollars, they should do fine. They could have 3 rts games that are really good paying them. SC 2 graphics do look like shit. Reforged was shit. That's the one part of SG that was dead on, the factions look like shit. Let other game makers take the risk of new content and sell an engine that can do 4v4v4 and ffa. If another DOTA got made on their engine they would only take 5 to 10 percent past a million. Whoever made the factions, the story world, and signed off on it was in the fraud. >>2126725they don't have their own engine. All they have now is a glorified pathfinding plugin that sucks dick. The game was fully ported to UE5 years ago.The only thing they can sell is rights to the IP and the project in its entirety, which is worth about tree fiddy.
>>2123357They scammed players, it's as simple as that. >They lied about the extent of their involvement with SC2>they lied that Kickstarter backers would get the full game>they lied that the Kickstarter money would be enough to finish the game, then they went back on their word and went out for more VC money (while lying about it being for only advertisement expenditures)>they withheld that the game would be F2P until after the Kickstarter ended, invalidating most people's backer rewards>they used their steam page as an advertising platform and lied about it>they attempted to bot their own steam reviews and changed their own account names to hide the fact it was FG staff>they created sockpuppet reddit accounts to praise FrostGiant and StormGate (on one occasion forgetting to log out of their main before doing so)>they lied on numerous occasions about how they would make statements explaining all of these actions

The game time token makes it f2p as even that 50 dollar expansion cA campaign, of 25 missions which is traditional to the industry, should 40 to 50 USD. Besides that. Stormgate is a great rts. It accomplished what it set out to be. Stormgates is an innovative mechanic that drives strategy and gameplay in meaningful ways. Also, the gameplay and controls are buttery smooth. Stormgate is not the problem, rts is just not a prime gaming experience. It's a niche experience, the numbers don't reflect wether stormgate is a good or bad game, they only reflect the market it plays on.

All you need to do is maintain the charade that you tried to deliver the product you promised, and that it's failure was organic and not a deliberate failure to fulfill your obligations. And it's regarded as better.https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/dawn-of-war-4-developer-king-art-knows-what-you-all-really-want-overwhelmingly-its-singleplayer-content-and-the-campaign/They knew they were using good will to pay themselves. This. Campaign. Is. Incredible.Just reached the mission "Gates of the Storm" where you need to keep the Infernal Host from Storming The Gates of the Celestial Elderkin, and all I can say is... WOW.Infernus Snape is one of the most complex villains I have ever experienced, the depth and nuance of him being an Infernal Host (basically a literal biblically accurate demon) while also trying to find a better life in the Celestial West is so poignant it literally broke me.It really speaks to the complexities we see in the world today, but on an EPIC scale with loads of super juiced up gameplay. You should definitely start playing now, once they finish designing the factions this game is going to rocket and you don't want to miss your chance!!!

So what if they deleted some troll posts and made literally minor and fair adjustments to the reviews with a few steam accounts? Last time I checked, anyone is entitled to make a steam review so why do you think FG employees don't deserve that human right? They *needed* the office next to EA, it isn't optional when you work in a field like this. The hustle & bustle of a busy California office sparks creativity and originality - evidenced by the three unique and vibrant playable forces in game.Let's unpack some of this disinformation:Alot of the hate for this game is quite simply misplaced, consumers don't know what they should spend money on and they shouldn't have a say in what creators make. Their job is to see the product and spend the money, full stop. Like, period. All of this nay saying about what they "want" is literally giving incel vibes.Do you think FG WANTED to make this game on a shoestring 40 million dollar budget? That's barely enough to cover a full height rock climbing wall with auto belay, not to mention the services required to ensure new routes are installed and correctly graded on the Yosemite Decimal System.Imagine trying to work in an environment where you can only climb the same three sends for two fucking months? Um, that's giving ick. Now worse, imagine a second rate contractor is hired and they rate a paltry 5.8 as a 5.11. You're expecting an intermediate climb with challenging crimps and you're basically walking up a ladder. Do you understand that is suicide in this industry? And what do you expect Tim to do, live on the skinny while he is essentially acting as the rock for this team? You want him to pull up to meet investors in an Uber, or worse, a common commuter sedan? A luxury automobile isn't something that a videogame CEO uses for FUN, it's a business asset.
>>2136322>Now worse, imagine a second rate contractor is hired and they rate a paltry 5.8 as a 5.11. I never understand how people get funding for developing copies of earlier games instead of doing something new and interesting. It was clear from the start this is a reskinned StarCraft at best.
>>2137127The reasoning is very simple. Copying popular games is a safe bet, while experimenting is a gamble. Players are more likely to be drawn to something they already know than step out of their comfort zone to play something completely new and unusual.
>>2137127A lot of people just spend money for the sake of it or to be part of an imaginary zeitgeist. If you generate hype they will spend. This sort of hype campaign where they claim "John Smith is a dude who made X and he's going to make a clone of X and it's going to be really popular" is basically cocaine to them.
>>2137226>Copying popular games is a safe bet, while experimenting is a gamble.Bullshit. Word of mouth out performs every time. "Just make a good game" is a thing for a reason. I remember people recommending Starcraft and winning/placing in tournaments at gaming conventions and lan cafes. If they like a game or movie they are going to talk about it with other people. The audience will find a way to play or consume content.A replied from David Fried, a former designer at FGThere are a few things from old-school AAA that are being ignored these days that are a huge factor in why sentiment for new "AAA" games is so low.Waiting until the game is truly polished to a fine sheen. This was a Blizzard staple. They had their own QA department and nothing got released until it was fun, complete, and mostly bug free. The map editor was not being focused on enough or complete enough at the time I was there for an old bastard like me to make missions. Making Warcraft III missions while the editor was being created did happen, but we had a lot more time for WarIII and the map editor was pretty much complete when we started making the campaign. The narrative was all over the place and the characters were not showcased in the right way at the initial launch. A first time watcher would have little understanding The RTS genre needs a stronger FTUE introduction. The expectations of old-school Blizzard were set and not delivered on at the time of Early Access launch. According to his LinkedIn he was a design contractor from Jul 2023 to Feb 2024. If what he said was true it sounds like all these problems with SG were flagged early on before the EA came out, but were ignored. The money got spent on salaries of people who knew what they were doing, they didn't listen. You PAID (get it, they already have your money) them to succeed, let them succeed.I have to drop this dudes reddit comments here because they are worth looking at.

>>2137127mist be some buiseness shit which works with people which have no experience in games>>2137226copying better games is just setting yourself for failure. especially in rts genre where even sequels, and well-made sequels struggle to take off cos people would rather just play old games they are used to due to how much actually playing well tied to enjoyment of the gamebut even outseid of that trend chasing only lead to major failures. first everyone was obsessed with making wow killer. then it was de-throning dota2. then overwatch came. then dozens of battle royales. all and everything failed cos bottolm line theres 2-3 top games in each genre and people not gonna play anything else because those top games are well made, familiar and have lots of money behind them.

>>2138063Likewise, there were plenty of innovative failures that didn't catch on because players found them different, weird or unfamiliar. The thing is, people want more of the same, they're drawn to things that look like stuff they already like. If you had to choose between two games of equal production values: one that looks like your favorite series and one that's like nothing you've seen before, you're going to take interest in the former - you'll immediately recognize what's cooking and if it's worth your time, and even if it's clearly not the best, the 'Wow, two cakes!' principle kicks in, because having more things to your liking is always nice. The latter tells you nothing and will require a closer look, so you don't know if it'll become an acquired taste or a complete waste of time.On the other hand, devs and investors don't like to be on the cutting edge, because if you fail, you fail; and if you succeed, someone else might copy your homework with a bigger budget.
>>2138063By the way, sequels, like AoE2, CoH2, DoW2, RA2, or Warcraft 2 and 3, as well as spiritual successors like SupCom or Starcraft are some of the most successful games in the genre, so doubling down is a valid approach in theory, especially after the discontinued support for SC2.

Perfectly placed candles were set inside a circle and lit, flickering in the wind as the brightest moon shone through my open window on the darkest of nights. I took out my tarot cards and spread them on a nearby table. Below me was a pentagram etched on the floor with the whitest chalk, as I carefully placed printed pictures of Frost Giant employees, taken from their LinkedIn profiles, at each point of the inverted star. Behind me, I had a shelf full of voodoo dolls, carefully crafted to resemble every Frost Giant employee, as I poked them with large, sharp pins dipped in snake venom. In the nearby kitchen, I had a large cauldron bubbling with 'Game Failure Juice,' made from toads, cat urine, and a hair from Tim's head that I took while visiting their game booth at PAX East. I drank my dark elixir and chanted 'make it flop' as dark clouds rolled in and a wolf howled in the background while I burned screenshots of the beta.
