If you played long ago, you may remember Warlock's Ruleset, the first real mod (ie: actual code changes rather than simple changes made with DevEd, the developer tool). No one else was able to figure out hex editing for like 20 years, but there's a bit of a golden age happening right now with modern mods completely eclipsing past modding efforts, Warlock included.

The two main mods are Ziggurat Engine Mod, which most people use for PBEM games (email multiplayer). PBEM is a pretty chill intro into multiplayer imo.

The other one is Age of Wonders X, which we use for LAN games. But it also has a custom campaign and single-player "challenge mode" (not noob friendly).

I've posted in Triumph Studios discord a couple times to basically zero interest lol.

Game duration is highly map dependent. A small map could take like 45 minutes. An extra large epic map could take 4-6 hours.

Players generally focus on whoever is the biggest threat. If you're a noob, everyone will probably try to make peace with you until everyone else is dead. If you wanna git gud, you'll definitely improve faster by joining voicechat and playing a couple games, watching how other player perform tactical combat in particular. Guides exist, but they're pretty basic.

The game is easily pirated, or purchased for like 5 bucks. Multiplayer works either way though. And both steam/gog are the same version (1.36).

It's nice, but a couple of mechanics are a bit dated. Ex. units can either move (or move-attack in melee) or perform an indirect action (including stuff like ranged or magical attacks), but not a combination of the two. Having individual action points for abilities was introduced in AoW2. Archers and musketeers can attack units right next to them, there's no adjacency rule. Units can retaliate against an infinity of attacks (with the notable exception of units only possessing a ranged attack, like the aforementioned archers and musketeers), as if they all have Tireless (or the HoM&M equivalent). Already captured empty structures with walls cannot be captured by enemy regular land troops; they require either a flying unit, one with wall climbing, or one with some sort of wall destroying attack (either melee or ranged). This means empty watchtowers (that have already been taken by a player) are hilariously strong against many early armies without battering rams (which most people avoid building, because they're slow as shit, and have no other use apart from breaking gates).

Oddly enough, auto-combat works quite differently from most other TBS games either before or since. Instead of doing a calculation of army strengths, the computer just lines up both armies next to each other, and makes them slug it out (including whiffing strikes). This makes heavy melee units extremely strong in auto-combat (as long as it's not against flying units).
Another interesting thing is that melee units cannot deliberately attack flying units. They can only retaliate against melee attacks from flying units. So a single flying unit, with some sort of ranged or breath attack, can exterminate an entire army of the heaviest melee-only units you can have (ex. Karaghs).

Also the sound effects suck. They spent all their audio budget on hiring Michiel van den Bos (and it shows, the OST is great), so they had to use royalty-free SFX.

I remember reading though one changelog, and noticing that the modder gave halflings their pistol-armed sheriffs from AoW2.
As I understand from the general storyline, that's lore-inaccurate, since guns started spreading out after the Keeper victory (which allowed humans to continue living in the Eastern part of the former elven empire). So in AoW1 halflings wouldn't yet be acquainted with personal firearms (those would still be human-only).

I've spotted a lore inaccuracy in AoW X as well. Namely, the addition of goblin butchers. During the events of AoW1 those weren't a thing. The enchanted poleaxes were created by Mab, after the became the ruling deity of the goblin race.

In order to play PBEM, the "host" basically creates a custom version of a map with everyone's picks for abilities/spheres. For the sake of the host not having a huge advantage, players publicly announce their builds to make it fair.

I agree it's lame as fuck, and LAN/Live games don't suffer such drawbacks.

As I mentioned in another thread, the AoW series is the only one among the old-school fantasy TBS franchises whose each installment isn't strictly worse or better than the rest (with the notable exception of AoW2 and SM). You can play AoW1 on its own strengths, same with AoW SM, or 3, or 4, or even Planetfall. Somehow, Triumph Studios managed to make each title a self-contained experience, despite sharing lore and mechanics.
