We play LAN games (via Radmin) every weekend and sometimes (rarely) on weekdays. Would be sweet to have more people join, we've got 5 reliable players right now and about a half dozen irregularshttps://discord.com/invite/zn9yARHDFjhttps://discord.com/invite/zn9yARHDFj
>>2113921This was my childhood favorite game, but I am not much of multiplayer player. I might join in tho. There could be more people to find in heavengames discord server.
>>2113921I'm for one very interested in joining your furry scat inflationist cult
How long does an average game take? Also is there a guide on how to play this game properly like there is for HoMM3 or can you just play whatever you like and not get curbstomped?
Don't think I have time to play, but if you have some youtuber guy recording the matches and posting them might be cool
>>2114089If you played long ago, you may remember Warlock's Ruleset, the first real mod (ie: actual code changes rather than simple changes made with DevEd, the developer tool). No one else was able to figure out hex editing for like 20 years, but there's a bit of a golden age happening right now with modern mods completely eclipsing past modding efforts, Warlock included. The two main mods are Ziggurat Engine Mod, which most people use for PBEM games (email multiplayer). PBEM is a pretty chill intro into multiplayer imo.The other one is Age of Wonders X, which we use for LAN games. But it also has a custom campaign and single-player "challenge mode" (not noob friendly).I've posted in Triumph Studios discord a couple times to basically zero interest lol.>>2114095Ah, that explains why there's 60+ people in the server but only a dozen playing multiplayer. Makes sense now.>>2114434Game duration is highly map dependent. A small map could take like 45 minutes. An extra large epic map could take 4-6 hours.Players generally focus on whoever is the biggest threat. If you're a noob, everyone will probably try to make peace with you until everyone else is dead. If you wanna git gud, you'll definitely improve faster by joining voicechat and playing a couple games, watching how other player perform tactical combat in particular. Guides exist, but they're pretty basic.>>2114458Hmm, maybe I'll do that at some point. For now, this is all I got:https://youtu.be/RKvZa01o1es?si=1IdyCXJdn1nH3zyb

Which mods/patches should I use if I only want to play in single-player mode?
Fuck right off with shilling your shitcord
>>2114511I played when I was a kid so I know the game but obviously nothing on how to play it properly. Will check out a few games on YT to see what its about.
>d*scord
>>2114723That's my buddy's post (the author of Ziggurat Mod), I don't want to piggyback off his post lol. But both of our discords have since been added to a stickied post by a moderator in that forum anyways.>>2114813If you've already beaten the vanilla campaign, I'd recommend Age of Wonders X. But definitely recommend the vanilla campaign first desu.>>2114819As opposed to what? Organizing multiplayer games on 4chan?>>2115240Hell yeah bro
>radmin>shitcordCan you round that out with some spyware from other parts of the world?
>>2115679Some of you may get hacked, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. Jokes aside, I don't think it's a huge concern.
>>2115259As opposed to not joining your gay ass shitcord. Go fuck yourself.

>>2114598>everyone's invited>except orcsUnless I'm reading that screen wrong
I watched Seths rev on the game how is the game in general also do i need to own the game and which version is better ? (from quick read gog and steam are completely same)
>>2116158orcs were invited but killed lol>>2116380The game is easily pirated, or purchased for like 5 bucks. Multiplayer works either way though. And both steam/gog are the same version (1.36).>how is the game in generalit's the best
>>2116380It's nice, but a couple of mechanics are a bit dated. Ex. units can either move (or move-attack in melee) or perform an indirect action (including stuff like ranged or magical attacks), but not a combination of the two. Having individual action points for abilities was introduced in AoW2. Archers and musketeers can attack units right next to them, there's no adjacency rule. Units can retaliate against an infinity of attacks (with the notable exception of units only possessing a ranged attack, like the aforementioned archers and musketeers), as if they all have Tireless (or the HoM&M equivalent). Already captured empty structures with walls cannot be captured by enemy regular land troops; they require either a flying unit, one with wall climbing, or one with some sort of wall destroying attack (either melee or ranged). This means empty watchtowers (that have already been taken by a player) are hilariously strong against many early armies without battering rams (which most people avoid building, because they're slow as shit, and have no other use apart from breaking gates). Oddly enough, auto-combat works quite differently from most other TBS games either before or since. Instead of doing a calculation of army strengths, the computer just lines up both armies next to each other, and makes them slug it out (including whiffing strikes). This makes heavy melee units extremely strong in auto-combat (as long as it's not against flying units). Another interesting thing is that melee units cannot deliberately attack flying units. They can only retaliate against melee attacks from flying units. So a single flying unit, with some sort of ranged or breath attack, can exterminate an entire army of the heaviest melee-only units you can have (ex. Karaghs). Also the sound effects suck. They spent all their audio budget on hiring Michiel van den Bos (and it shows, the OST is great), so they had to use royalty-free SFX.
>>2116541>orcs were invited but killed lolDamn son, what do they do to deserve that?Is it a balance reason or funny meme reasonDon't even care for orcs so it wouldn't bother me, but even with vanilla I never learned all the ins and outs of what was cracked or OPI just did enough to get 4/6 endings in the campaign
LIZARDMEN
>>2116573You might enjoy some changes made by modern mods, AoWx and Zig have really pushed the game a long way.>>2116619That multiplayer lobby screenshot was from reloading an ongoing game. The orcs just happened to be the first to die.
>>2118221I remember reading though one changelog, and noticing that the modder gave halflings their pistol-armed sheriffs from AoW2. As I understand from the general storyline, that's lore-inaccurate, since guns started spreading out after the Keeper victory (which allowed humans to continue living in the Eastern part of the former elven empire). So in AoW1 halflings wouldn't yet be acquainted with personal firearms (those would still be human-only).
>>2119295That would be the AoW Evolved mod. Its creator moved on to AoW4 after getting banned from BXL's discord server lol (creator of Ziggurat Mod).I'm not a fan of wacky stuff that isn't lore accurate. Kind of ruins the immersion and nostalgia imo.
>>2119836>getting banned from BXL's discord server lolWhy does BXL love sucking Xi Jinping's jiba so much? I was interested in multiplayer but the admin making third worldism so prominent in a 90s TBS server turned me off.
>j-join my discordNo.
>>2119836 >I'm not a fan of wacky stuff that isn't lore accurate.I've spotted a lore inaccuracy in AoW X as well. Namely, the addition of goblin butchers. During the events of AoW1 those weren't a thing. The enchanted poleaxes were created by Mab, after the became the ruling deity of the goblin race.
>>2120245haha I'm gonna screenshot this and send it to him>>2120255p-p-please bro?>>2120333I didn't know that, interesting. Butchers still fit my headcanon though. Pistol wielding halflings not so much idk
>>2120604wat
For me? it's the Orc Swordsman. The best tier 1 unit.
halfling pony cavalry stand tall
The real tier 1 goat
not only do elephants have wall crushing, but they're also way hotter than nymphs
>>2122663If you are into feminization fetish.
>>2124678>skill labelled "seduce">thicc naked bitch kisses>hearts appear around target unit>no change of clothing or model on target>just swaps sidesif you read that as feminisation fetish that says more about you than anything else
>>2125679it's canon that nymphs turn human males into trannies though https://aow.heavengames.com/stories/sirdanc/
>>2125914sissified, but not a trannybesides which, official or not, I'm not putting much stock in secondary material written by San Franciscansif it's not in the game, it's fanfiction
>>2126625it's actually in the game, iirc sirdanc appears in the final campaign scenario. and the story was written by ray bingham, the franchise's writer lol
>>2136668..They announced their builds? The fuck? Why.
>>2140520In order to play PBEM, the "host" basically creates a custom version of a map with everyone's picks for abilities/spheres. For the sake of the host not having a huge advantage, players publicly announce their builds to make it fair.I agree it's lame as fuck, and LAN/Live games don't suffer such drawbacks.
>>2142048That sounds miserable. Even Dominions lets you hide that shit till people figure it out.
>>2142829yes
>>2113921how many trannies are in that discord?
>>2142829As I mentioned in another thread, the AoW series is the only one among the old-school fantasy TBS franchises whose each installment isn't strictly worse or better than the rest (with the notable exception of AoW2 and SM). You can play AoW1 on its own strengths, same with AoW SM, or 3, or 4, or even Planetfall. Somehow, Triumph Studios managed to make each title a self-contained experience, despite sharing lore and mechanics.
