I saw a game called "The Scouring" that just came out on Early Access today. It feels a lot like Warcraft 2. I feel like it has a lot of promise if the dev sticks with it.

It made me wonder, though. How many "Warcraft-likes" are there out there? There's got to be some games out there in the Warcraft mold since Blizzard has essentially decided to never make another Warcraft RTS game (and, at this point, if they did it almost certainly would be some kind of horrific bastardization)
>>
>>2118307
It's very bad. At least the demo was. There's only 3-4 units for each faction and they are exactly the same shit as the other faction. I really don't see why it exists.
>>
>>2118312
Oh also one of the maps was just Seton's Clutch, except the game doesn't have naval warfare or any of the complexity of SC, so why even bother?
>>
>>2118312
I mean, that's what Warcraft 2 was like. Basically a mirror match outside of a few abilities.
>>
>>2118313
The dev says he's going to put naval warfare in, it's early access.
>>
>>2118314
Yeah but there was like 10 units. It was also a very long time ago and the game offered much more content and flavour. This game feels like a retarded AI is trying to make an RTS. It's so soulless and has no personality of its own. If you like the format and want to make a callback 2 faction RTS, why not give it your own setting and ideas? Something interesting and creative.
>>
>>2118320
Like I said before, the game is in early access. The dev already added in some units for the EA, and apparently he doesn't want them to be as much of a mirror match as they currently are. He's also planning on releasing another faction down the line alone with flying units and naval units like I already said. It's a bit bare-bones right now, but like I said I think it has some promise if the dev actually makes good on his roadmap.
>>
>>2118322
Ok should hopefully be fine then. He really gave it to us early on though, so a lot of people might have been turned off.
>>
>>2118307
>How many "Warcraft-likes" are there out there?
I remember one called Purple War. I played the demo to check out the elf faction but otherwise wasn't interested. It was very Blizzard-like in gameplay and visuals, basically plagiarism.
>>
>>2118307
it's impressive that one dude made it, but it's so derivative and unoriginal one might ask... why did it get made in the first place, when warcraft 2 and 3 exist?
>>
>>2118373
There's some unique things about it, like the ability to move units to the tops of towers and have them shoot down at enemies, how cannons work, how farms work, the physics stuff, the hero mode.
>>
>>2118322
>down the line
I'm so fucking sick of this.
No, I won't buy it until it's fully playable as intended. I've bought so many fucking RTS games these last 3 years that all promised "ohhh shit is coming soon, trust us!" and then its either shit or not coming at all.
Early access is a cancer on the industry. Devs need to be hungry and destitute to be motivated to actually deliver a good game. The moment the early-access money rolls in all devs just take it easy.
And why wouldn't they, they are already paid and consider adding more "unpaid and annoying work" instead of a core promise.
Not trying to be a doomer, that's just my experience. Pay up and play it, let people here know if it sucks or not.
>>
>>2118371
>The orcs have zerg units
What the fuck?
>>
>>2118378
Then don't buy the Early Access. I'm not hear to shill the game, I just thought it was neat that there are games out there trying to be like the Warcraft RTS games since Blizzard is apparently not interested in continuing the RTS franchise.

Oh, but he wants money NOW, doesn't he? I bet he promises to fix everything that's missing, add 5 more faction, one million more maps and units and make the sun shine every day even at night. If ONLY you pay 22.49.
From the Steam page:
>Features: Multiplayer first. Want a Singleplayer experience? Fuck you!
>Modding! Users will have to mod stuff in. I ain't doing shit.
>The Scouring introduces a new genre: Action RPG strategy
That's a fucking lie we have quite a lot of games like this and none of them are popular except Warcraft 3.
>While you dominate the battlefield, AI manages your army, resources, and bases
Oh shit, there's this guy in the Dawn of War thread who said having to do anything in an RTS automatically makes it a gook clicker. This game sounds perfect for him, just pay some money and let the game play itself. Starcraft 2 killer right here guys. Fucking hell the state. The absolute state.
>>
>>2118384
I mean, that's the thing with Early Access, which has essentially become the norm among indie games. I'm not really here to shill his Early Access. I'm just not particularly mad that Early Access is, in fact, Early Access. It's just not that out of the ordinary these days, for better or for worse. You should always approach an indie Early Access with caution.

As for the other stuff, I don't really care what order he does stuff in so long as he actually does it. It's only important if you're really invested in the Early Access.

Official modding tools are a good thing. I don't know why you're portraying it as a negative.

The last thing is a separate "hero mode" where you basically play as a WC3 hero who gets items and levels semi-MOBA style with things like dungeons being added to the map. I don't think its intended as an "RTS playing itself" so much as something different altogether. It's an interesting concept, though I think it could use some work. For one, you should be less beholden to the AI.
>>
watched day9 play it and it seemed worth keeping an eye on
>>
A notable one that I liked is Godsworn. It's got a unique setting too (that being fantasy version of the Northern Crusades), and is just generally pretty. And it plays well, though personally this style of RTS is not one I am super into.

Faction wise there are two, with hero based subfactions (who have different units and upgrades and stuff)
>>
>>2118374
not enough for any sort of commercial success, especially given how much time and work went into it
>>
>>2118371
lmaoing at these devs. game looks like a yanky warcraft 3, and it needs 16 gigs of ram and an i7 8700k
>>
>>2118307
At first glance I thought that was a horseman wielding a shield and I thought kino.
Then I realized it was a bowman and they were using smoke to hide their shitty art skills.

They're keeping it small so you can't see how shitty the art is. Notice how multiple characters are missing fingers.

Darfall has the aesthetic down if you like base building horde defense missions

I watched his review and I would buy it today if it didn't do grids and squares. Manor Lords spoiled me so I won't go back to grid builders. I can do Minecraft or Roblox for grid, but I'm not a little kid so I would need mods or PG 13 R maps.

For a $20 game it looks good though.

>How dare a literal one man show sell his working game in early access in this dead and unpopular genre whose biggest issue is profitability
Chill out dude, the age of high budget RTs has been dead a fucking while because people don't like micro

Yeah, pretty fun game. My favorite hero/subfaction is Bishop. I don't know I just like factions with gunpowder units in medieval setting where no many factions use gunpowder. I wish the devs would finally add more missions to the campaign tho.
>>
>>2119184
Yeah I only played the demo back in a nextfest. It felt great, just like WC3. A good campaign would sell me on it.
>>
>>2118384
you sound miserable
>>
>>2118307
>make a warcraft clone
>but it looks hella retarded
wow.
>>
>>2119188
The campaign's only got Act 1 so far, but it is co-op
The missions do feel War3-lite, with side missions, and there is some variety as you play as different heroes between missions
>>
>>2119184
Same, and that's the main thing they are working on RN, next big patch are the next five missions for the campaign.
>>
>>2118384
>add 5 more faction
Based if true
Only buy his game if he include more than two factions
>>
>>2119184
is this fun against bots? might pirate
>>
>>2118312
Yeah. Like, WC2 was cool, but I don't need a copy with unnecessary micro. Why the fuck do I need to tell my units when to drink their potions? And if you're gonna make a WCII clone why not add way more units and buildings?
>>
>>2119839
The units drink potions automatically when their health gets low.
>>
>>2119839
Theyre waiting for the asset store to have a sale
>>
>>2119858
oof yikes
>>
>>2118307
Loria is a WC2 tribute but in the end none of the clones are better than the source material
>>
>>2119858
They're using store assets? Link?
>>
i played this thing's demo. it seemed pretty slow and boring.
>>
>>2119184
>I don't know I just like factions with gunpowder units in medieval setting where no many factions use gunpowder.
Well historically there were gunpowder weapons in medieval times, but it was in the late medieval period and those were mostly pretty primitive kinds of weapons.
It didn't truly kickoff into something much bigger until after the medieval period ended.
>>
>>2118307
Armies of Exigo.
Though it's closer more to StarCraft than WarCraft despite being WarCraft-like.
>>
>>2119802
It's good fun, plus they have a lot of scenarios
