>>2124504>>2124501There is little reason to use berserks over champs. They have a slight advantage in raiding and are convenient to make in a castle drop.

>>2124199the fantasy of age of empires is playing as great period-accurate empires and civilizations and duking it out on epic battlefields while guiding them through th centuries, similar to the civ games but more specific and localizedyou know, "what if the holy roman and chinese empires went to all out war!" and "what if the ottoman and british empires fought over aztec gold!" kind of stuff4 is still starved of civ variety and there's dozens of cool big powerful medieval empires they could add, and all they keep doing are these fucking "variants" which are just some random specific dynasties or one-off leaders of already existing civs, it's beyond boring, misses the entire point of the franchise, and is very obviously a shitty cost-cutting measure because they want to minimize the amount of new assets they need to produceit's exactly as shitty as the 3 kingdoms for 2, but the difference is 4 players actually gobble it up without complaint
>>2123904AoE IV took the direction of recycling civs with outright fantasy 'what if' versions sometime ago, because it turns out that trying to go differentiating everyone, while still trying to cover many of the same bases the original AoE II already had - is a fuckton more work than just simply reusing the same tech tree skeleton with different sprites.

I don't think the new DLC civs in AoE IV are bad. Sure they're technically just variants but they're each more unique than a AoE II civ. Nu indians have 4 extra types of elephants which is really cool because that's the main reason you picked indians and they also dropped the "you get upgrades for free but they are slow unless you buy scholars" gimmick with a more normal system that gives you faster but more expensive upgrades.Nu byz have a twist on mercenaries so instead of recruiting longbows and stuff they have their own unique types, which is pretty cool and at the same time them getting silver from mines means that you as their opponent can try to stop them getting silver instead of olive oil being generated from farms that they could put at the back of their base.No idea about mongols or japs because I don't play them.I will not buy the DLC because there's already so many other civs that I could learn to play but I think it's a net positive for the game.

>>2123889>>The Macedonian Dynasty (Byzantines Variant)>>2123904Going for the Macedonians feels like such a weird pick to me. I saw a rumor going around it was originally supposed to be its own Viking civ but idk how true it is. Apparently Byzantines in AoE IV already have Varangians units as well? I feel like going with the Komnenoi or Palaiologos dynasties would've been more interesting. The Komnenoi having more of a siege (John Komnenos) and Latin mercenary focus (Manuel Komnenos) and Alexios also made extensive use of various nomadic tribes from the Baltics and Anatolia and their dynasty is the last time you see the Varangians. With the Palaiologos you could also start having some Ottoman influence (fuck you Kantakouzenos), Serbian, the Catalan Company, Venetian/Genoese influence was also huge towards the end. Varangians are gone by this time. The empire couldn't afford them after 1204. >>2123982The Macedonian dynasty was the last time you really see the Eastern Roman Empire expanding and reclaiming territories. You see some revival during the Komnenian Restoration but outside of Justinian's conquests early on this is the peak of the empire. Basil II (nicked named the Bulgarslayer), John Tzimiskes, Nikephoros Phokas (made the Saracens piss themselves with fear. They called him "The Pale Death of the Saracens") are probably the most standout names militarily.

>>2127658>no one likes dark age minigames>t. Redbull
>>2127658They got rid of animal laming and tc shots spoiling meat, baby steps. Many pros have said it's not even that efficient to funnel chickens on most map types and it's better to just send 2 vills to eat them one-by-one.
>>2126581Something like the Generals Challenge from C&C Generals Zero Hour could work as well, exemplifying the strengths and weaknesses of civs. Though it would be a bit dry since that was mostly 1v1s unless you add in smaller opponents for flavor (ie cutting off Spanish trade). Stronghold missions in DoW1 DC/SS also come to mind, and the RA2 mod Mental Omega also had a handful of army-specific challenges that let you take any army you want aside from the opponent's exact own.Seeing >>2123563 makes me think a Risk or Dark Crusade-style game mode for AoE II could probably be fun too, though at that point I'd prefer some more co-op stuff.

When are we getting Macedonia as a civ?
I haven't played this game since the early 2000s and I want to go back (I was a kid so I was very bad at the game). Which civs can you recommend me that are flexible enough for me to learn? I don't want to develop bad habits
>>2127878Probably MagyarsThey have no eco bonus so you don't become over reliant on it, and have a fairly straightforward gameplan that applies to tons of other civs; people will often recommend Saracens/Byz for similar reasons, but frankly their very open tech tree can be a double-edged sword since you're not really funneled into any specific strat and that can be overwhelming during an actual match. The real redpill here is that the best civ to play is the one you like the most, developing bad habits is secondary to your enjoyment of the game since I doubt you'll be playing in S-tier tournos within the next couple of months; just avoid Chinese/Malay/Khmer/Gurjaras/Huns since they're a bit whacky (or don't: I have a friend who has 1700 games on Chinese and barely 10 on any other civ, and I'd say he enjoys the game plenty)
>>2127840Byzantines (the Greeks) are already in the game
>>2127914Not the same thoughever.
>>2127914Makedonia has existed as an independent and non-greek state since antiquity until the late medieval period.
We could be out there, getting Austria and Poland and Danes for Age of Empires 3.I hate this timeline.
>>2128016Macedonians are Greek. Unless you mean the slav squatters.
>>2128045Macedonians weren't Greek. Philip II and Alexander III conquered Greece.
You know what would make Dark Age interesting? Every civ starting out with 5 villagers and some houses already.Chinese then get to start with some more idk how many to make it balanced.
>>2128056They have the same origin and culture as every other Greek people of the time like Athenians or Spartans. They speak a Greek language. They didn't conquer "Greece" because Greece wasn't a thing until Byzantine and modern nationalism. They simply conquered the other Greek city states and kingdoms, of which Macedon was just one of. Macedonians are Greek the same way Mercians and Wessexians are English, i.e. they are the same group of people who have later been gathered under one national umbrella. If Macedonians aren't Greek then neither are any of the other Greek tribes.
>>2128065Different language, different pantheon, different army. There's nothing "greek" about Macedonia. If anything, greeks are aping the culture and language of their conquerors and pretending it's their own.
>>2128116Wrong
>>2128134not an argument :)
>>2127914>Byzantines (the Greeks)Byzantines are Romans. Who were originally Greeks.
>>2128159even if you insist on calling it the Roman empire, the majority of citizens were still ethnically and culturally Greek and not Latin ("Roman")
You know what would make Dark Age interesting? Every civ starting out with having to do those sex minigames from God of War to boost villager production, but we get to hear the female villagers moan in their native tongue.
>>2128165>insistThat's what it was, yes.

Are there any civ matchups that are truly and undeniably one-sided, given:>equal mechanical and macro skill>no aggression in feudal>equal fast Castle into 3 TC boom>unraidable ecos>fighting from late CA into mid Imp with realistic resourcesMaya vs Goths/Inca ?
>>2128326I think Hindustanis vs Mayans is a pretty huge stomp iirc.
They should make a separate mode in aoe2 to include aoe3's timeframe and drop the numbering system already. That way we have the ultimate aoe game.
>>2128330Oh yea pretty trueThe more I look at it the more I realise Mayans are kinda fucked in a lot of situations, being an archer-focused meso is really cursed compared to monks + siege + infantry (Azt) and being a pure counter civ (Inca)
>>2128337Meso civs are just shit in general now unless they somehow boom into eagle spam. Incas are probably the best general one and Aztecs are still ok if you're good at micro I guess. Mayans have their eco but I feel like it only takes them so far now.
>>2128330No aggression in Feudal Mayans means a lot of fucking archers. Hindustanis can't outproduce them with just castles.
>>2128060Empire Wars already exists and nobody plays that mode.
>>2127840I have good news anon.
I've always found it really telling how, despite 4chan hosting some of the biggest contrarians I've ever seen, I've never ever ever seen anyone defending or even pretending to defend AoE1
the original Age of Empires is a very fun game, one of the titans of the genre that codified many of the tropes that are still common in RTS to this day
>>2128619I like it tho :(It's more simple mechanically, making it a more relaxed game than 2. Also the idea of ages fits the first game better.>Stone Age (Paleolithic)>Tool Age (Neolithic)>Bronze Age>Iron Age
>>2128326Can you elaborate more that goth vs inca matchup? Don't think I've ever seen slingers shooting at huskarls, but if hand cannoneers work this should as well. But goths have actual hand cannoneers, decent CA and they both have siege. Might just come down to bombard cannons vs redemption monks.
>>2128330Ghulam are about equal with eagles power and cost-wise, and lose out with the mayan unique tech. Rest depends on the supporting army.
>>2128674I meant Maya vs Goth and Maya vs IncaThe first is self-explanatory, the second feels very one sided if Maya can't get enough Feudal damage done>>2128677Ghulams have bonus damage vs Eagles, and Hindus have some of the best HC in the game
>>2128686oh, I thought the anti-eagle bonus was exclusive to militia linethen yeah that sucks
>>2128693I checked, it's there but only a +2 bonus instead of the usual +8. They're still probably even with eldorado so it would come down to the units in the back.
>>2128619I like AoE1 better because of the extreme aggression. No TC arrows makes early rushing surprisingly fun to execute. I also enjoy the retarded power gaps between units. A Centurion one shots a villager when fully upgraded.
>>2128619AoE1 is excellent tho
I just can't beat Korean extreme AI no matter what. No matter how many counter units I make, the absurd number of those horses with an archer inside a box is too much for anyone to handle. I had all the relics, I had way better economy, it was all for nothing because that unit is just plain OP.
>>2128976It counts as CA. When I play them the biggest issue is skirmishers, halbs if they get close, onagers in large numbers, and a couple UUs. camel archer, huskarl, ghulam, genoese crossbowman. Also, it's an expensive unit with little dps. Just a meatshield to cover arbs and siege.
Why does this keep happening to me every now and then? My ally still has his market untouched by the way, and these units have not gotten damaged at all.
>Play multiplayer>Enemy surrenders at first sight of MAA>Enemy surrenders at first sight of MAA>Enemy surrenders at first sight of MAA>Enemy surrenders after MAA kills one villagerI wish people weren't that afraid to lose a game and just play a little longer.
>>2128740>>2128677My tests in CA weren't especially close, the +2 bonus damage is just too impactful for how squishy warriors arePost-Imp was a bit more interesting: out of the 25 battles I let the AI play out, Ghulams won 11 and Eagles won 14, with picrel being the most decisive result. I eventually switched to a single-line formation, thinking the double lines ever so slightly favourited Ghulams, but noticed no differences: sometimes the Eagles would just clump up of their own accord and get slaughtered, other times they'd take 1v1s and winAdding proper backline support (10 HC/10 Plumes) heavily favoured Ghulams once again since a couple of them could mop up Plumes in an instant, which the Eagles could not do; on top of that, this method of testing does not take into consideration how impactful Shatagni would be in an actual game
>>2129012>"wow this dude is a tryhard, I better surrender to avoid wasting my time"That's probably what they think
I just can't bring myself to do MAA rushes, it's so retarded in my mind to be honest. Why waste food and gold in a shit unit that gets easily killed 1v1 against a villager with loom? Might as well send a few villagers lmao
>>2128626>more relaxed gameNigga it's even faster paced than AoE II
>>2128805>A Centurion one shots a villager when fully upgradedjust as it would happen IRL? see >>2129061 villagers should not be able to win a 1v1 against a bear, or a swordman
>>2128997are you sure? if their market died and they rebuilt it at the same spot, how would you know?
>>2129101>are you sure?I'm 100% sure. It was a 2v2, Me + AI vs 2 AI. The map was that black forest variant that has one choke point in the middle with tons of relics. I walled and tower'd + castle the middle point early so literally not a single enemy unit was nowhere near our base the entire game, not even the enemy scout. The AI never deletes buildings.
>>2129023>training soldiers in a war game is tryharding

>>2129061>open M@A>manage to be mildly annoying with them>enemy trains 1 (one, uno) skirm>M@A are effectively dead already
>open tournament vod>archer blob
>>2129238Three MAA can ignore one arches for like two minutes, idling his woodline or gold. That's all you should be aiming for, only noobs lose vils to MAA. Just slow down his eco long enough to recoup the cost. Bonus if you forced a non-archer civ to make the range, maybe even fletching.
They really need to start taking 1v1 Elo into account in team game matchmaking. Me and my mates (around 1200 in both modes) very regularly get matched against people with hundreds of points higher Elo in 1v1 (while they for some reason have similar team Elo to us) and predictably get utterly crushed with not a single chance of making it a fair fight. How's a group of 1200s supposed to compete with a 1600 and a couple of 1400s? Like half the games we get are just stomps.
>>2129238Good luck with that against Bulgarian MAA.
>>2129319No they don't, team games and 1v1 games are completely different and require different skills.
>>2129061You gotta fight vills in small numbers or use them to cause idle time like with scouts, they move faster than vills assuming they aren't playing berbers or have handcart.>>2129238It's going to take a single skirm ages to micro down 1 maa
Any tips for starting improving against the AI?
>>21294291. Never stop making villagers until you're at like 852. Never let your resources float, if you have too much of something, just spend it and reorganize the villagers. Use the Market if pressured.3. Make army and upgrade it, focus on what your civ does best and think about what you can do to counter the counters to your best units.
>>2129429This is how you can easily beat the extreme AI with literally any civ:Get to feudal age as soon as possible, so around 20 villagers. In feudal, create 4 archers as soon as possible. When you get the 4 archers, move the villagers who are in gold to stone. Now move the 4 archers + 4 or 5 villagers to the AI base and build a tower near one of their resources. The AI is programmed to stop you from buildinf anything in its base by any means so it will instantly move all of its villagers to attack your builders. Use your archers to protect your builders (The AI is also programmed to make the villagers run away when attacked by archers) so the AI will stay in a confused state trying to both attack you while running away. You will get to kill many villagers while taking no damage from this. Once the tower is build, make another one near other resource. Repeat. Just make sure the archers don't get killed by the enemy TC. By this point the AI will be completely tamed. Now you can easily move to castle age to destroy him with siege, or just keep spamming archers in feudal.

LIFE OR DEATH questionTo my fellow Steam offline mode chads - is it just me or did you also stopped getting cheevo unlocks in offline mode? Before the China DLC, you got cheevo pop ups when you completed them even in offline mode, and then they would "upload" to steamcommunity the next time you went online. But ever since the China DLC... no cheevos popping. Won at least 5 games with all the new chinese civs, no pop ups ever. Even did some old achievements for historical battles (Lepanto, Bapheus, etc) - no pop ups.Is it... over? No more? Never again? I have exactly 222.0 hours in Age of Empires 2 on Steam, so I am playing offline only.
>>2129012It's more of a low elo thing, once you go up in elo people won't just roll over and die when you rush them. That being said I've had people at 16xx elo resign because they didn't want to play against the strat I was going for.
is AoE 1 not available to buy on steam? I was kinda feeling like playing it again for a while.
>>2129523>Be old fag>Doesn't know how to pirate in this day and ageAnon...
>>2129902just get RoR it's objectively better
>>2129495>>2129478>>2129434This works great but it's a coinflip in arabia. I made a few changes to make it bullet proof in any map. Instead of making 4 archers, make 4 skirms instead and get the armor upgrade instead of the attack one if you are tight on res. This will make it possible to survive if the AI has a lot of archers to defend, and will also free the villagers who would've been in gold and use them to build a second tower at the same time. Important note is that the AI wont know how to react only if you build at least one tower near the TC but not in its fire range. This destroys the AI economy. If the AI somehow gets to castle age, make some melee units because the AI will make rams to fuck up the towers, but other than that it doesnt make good use of castle age tech to counter you. Put your units in stand ground if you dont want them to walk into the TC range like retards. Garrison the villagersin the towers to get more arrows and heal them, thats why you should bring 5 villagers per tower you plan to build. If you do the 2 towers I said in the beginning, make sure they are in range of eachother but not too close to defend from melee attacks.
>>2129948instead of learning how to cheese the ai why don't you just learn how to play the game normally? shouldn't anyone that's like 1000 be able to beat it with a normal build?

>>2130111No I'm too busy M@Aing fools on Graveyard (it's totally not Arabia but sp00ky)
>>2129902Pirate the original and use UPatch, or just play Return of Rome.
>>2129991Yeah that's basically the Starcraft idea. Make as much money as you can and immediately spend it all, without queueing units.
Is there some way to get an "idle TC" indicator, the same way you have "idle villagers"? I noticed going through my replays, even in the games I win I'm always 20-30 vils behind.Found some mods online but guessing such are not allowed in matchmade games.
>>2129976The extreme AI is an absolute beast in the late game anybody would get trouble beating. I dare you to beat it without rushing it in the early game in arabia. Let it become an economy beast that will spam units non stop at you and micro all fights at the same time.
>>2130175and fill half the map with production buildings, so even if you win a fight there's a hundred more waiting
>>2130175>>2130187What you are describing is the 30 or 40 minutes peace treaty challenge. That's the time it takes the extreme AI to become unstoppable in arabia when it doesn't get rushed. Even Hera failed it on stream like a year ago an had to give the AI a trash civ while picking a counter civ himself to pull it off. Rushing the extreme AI is basically cheesing it.

hey guys, spirit of the law here, in this video we'll be ranking the top 10 ground textures
>How good are Anons? (4chan unique unit)shout out to squarespace for sponsoring this video..hey guys, Spirit of the Law here, in this unique unit deep dive we're going to be taking a look at the 4chan Anon. This unit has had some solid improvements to its gooning speed and capacity to disappoint parents in definitive edition along with a cost decrease and cheaper elite upgrade. So we're gonna talk about where it stands today, especially in relation to 4chan's already top-tier low cost janny linelet's check them out...https://youtu.be/Edyj-qxOaqc
>>2132280>optionalit isnt optional, if you play mp you are playing against bs civs that casually are released unbalanced and always have the highest win rate first months after release, they even made franks kind of lame after so many reworks
>>2132147yeah i dont get it. most units in the list are just better than generic arbs, but he puts a unit that has moderate downsides and moderate upsides at #5.
>>2132389>>optional3 highest win rates are suspiciously all on the last 2 dlc released..... they sell pay to win civs while making the old classic ones irrelevant. developers are faggots
>>2132392a random player will have 10% more chance to win playing with the lastest unbalanced civs than with an absolute classic of aoe2 like the franks, amazing dev team. deforming a classic for cheap bucks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hcz0TPUpsaU>honorable mention>a bonus that DOESNT EVEN EXISTwhat the fuck is SOTL smoking these days?
>>2132392>ahhh these civs have a 2-4% higher winrate my balance is FUCKEDit's literally nothingall civs have peaks and troughs
>>2132410Find me any game with a choice of 50+ options that has a significantly tighter winrate distribution
>>2132414steel division 2
>>2132415Lmao
>>2132414thats the problem, they keep adding new civs creating a never ending balance problem (and justifying their job) instead of finishing balancing the existing civs and just maintaining it, if you check the classic civs are a lot more balanced. we dont need 50 civs, its a simple game from the late 90s, with the classic ones you have more than enough variety, they could release new games if they are a real development studio but they are scammers that need to milk the old cow instead of creating something original (they tried and failed)i insist, developers are faggots that are ruining a classic game for cheap bucks because they are worth shit
>>2132417I only play SP so I literally don't give a shit lol
I’m down with new civs, but only up to a point, and I think we’ve passed that. Especially with how they clearly feel like they need to keep pushing the envelope and making new civs more and more exotic. The Indians elephant gimmick worked, Armenian and Georgian churches and carts worked, but this Chinese stuff is just too much. Heroes, half a dozen regional units, toms of weird-ass mechanics, we’re straying too far from AoK. It feels like they could bring back that “raider” mechanic from the beta and have cavalry kidnap villagers in the next DLC, and that’s not a good feeling to have.
>>2132147>Uuuh, you see Viking arbalester is better against targets with high pierce armor and
>>2132397you have double-digit IQ.
>>2132147They get an extra attack which is rare. Attack is the next best stat after range and RoF if you would pay attention. Most arbalesters are extremely similar as you would understand if you watched the video.
>>2132472yeah i'll make a top 10 best videogames in the world and make the honorable mention a game that doesnt exist lol.
Misread the win conditions for the last Ismail mission and got fucking jumpscared by the victory screen. Ottomans got cut off in the middle of their speech about how he's gonna fuck shit up.Pretty good campaign, probably the best in this DLC.

What makes a good campaign level?I feel like there's too many missions in AoEII that are basically just about building up until you're unbeatable and then steamrolling the whole enemy.
>>2130796I main Burmese and Mongols are one of my worst matchups. What am I missing?>+1-3 attack on infantryhelps MAA rush, later useless as they die to CA>cheap monk techsdie to CA or hussar spam>elephant armorbad against anyone who has access to even unupgraded pikemen (eg. not Turks)>Arambaibetter raw numbers but inaccurate and with 2 less range>siegeyeah...
>>2132859Ohh nvm I read the chart wrong. Yeah makes sense.
>>2132859Your main civ doesn't have a team bonus.
>>2132888Neither do Koreans, now that they nerfed mangos.
>haven't followed aoe4 for quite a while now>check the news>new dlc announced (coming out the same day as the fucking eu5, what could go wrong?)>it only features the fucking variant civsso they are just trying to kill this game off now, right?
>>2133017But they all look good?
>>2132397Hell would break loose if civ was introduced with that non-existant bonus
>>2133017I don't play 4 so I couldn't tell you what they think about it but judging by the comments on the trailer they're not liking it much that said it might not be representative as there's a couple of guys asking for AoE3 dlc in every single one of their comment sections and I'm pretty sure nobody played that trash even after it went F2P
>>2132744You're telling me an RTS is full of missions about growing in strength to defeat an enemy? That's preposterous
I've played through the campaigns of every "Age of" game except for AoE3I just really didn't like something about it
>>2132204I killed all the Taira army leaders but they didn't surrender.I destroyed every building in Kyoto, Kyoto resigned, I still didn't win.
>>2133081At its most basic and simplified, AoE is about a balance between improving your economy or making units.Campaign missions that allow you to stay in your base for 40 minutes, or force you to stay in your base for 40 minutes lest you trigger a scripted attack you're not ready for, are boring
>>2133066I think the gut reaction everyone had was "who cares about variant civs" but the community is coming around to them as they've actually read what they do.For example the india variant that gets rid of the scholars gimmick and gives you more elephants in return looks really fun.People are forgetting that the templars and lancasters DLC set a precedent for variant civs being interesting instead of being silly shit like "France but with Joan of Arc who fires a gun at people" or "China but Shaolin monks"
>>2133099>that allow you toThe game is as hard as you choose to make it. Force yourself to spend only 20 minutes in the base thenThe game "allows you to" play on easy or even use cheats
>>2133107I get what you mean but I prefer campaign missions that ask something challenging of me. Sure I can start attacking enemy castles and armies while I'm still in feudal but that's not going to be challenging in a way I would find fun.
>>2132744>>2133099Wonders, relics, time limits. Side objectives to get you out on the map before you’re ready to attack. Really thick defenses and strong enemies that mean you might get pushed back and have to regroup. You might be thinking that the enemy needs to be more aggressive. That’s usually not a good idea. I’ve played custom campaigns where the AI is as aggressive as it “should” be given it’s starting conditions, and holy fuck is it not fun. If your single player scenario feels like you need to cheese it or apply multiplayer tactics, you’ve done something very wrong. That said, to each their own. Maybe you’d like that sort of thing. I will say, however, if turtling up until you have an unstoppable deathball is boring to you, then why are you doing it? It’s single player. There’s no meta, there’s nobody judging you, play how you want.
>>2133138Look at it this way; objectively speaking, the best way to defeat 90% of the campaign super fortresses is to castle drop them. 10-20 vils, put it within range of a tower or something, they stream their entire army into it, you siege down their empty base and win. It’s easy, effective, and really fucking boring and obviously not how the game’s meant to be played. You can either demand every scenario be engineered to disallow this specific tactic that nobody likes, or just say to your self “that’s fucking lame and I’m not going to do it” and proceed to actually play the game and have fun.I do sympathize with wanting a challenge, mind you. I’m just not sure there’s a way to really guarantee it without making things aggressively unfun.
>>2133144>or just say to your self “that’s fucking lame and I’m not going to do it” and proceed to actually play the game and have fun. This is the correct choice in every game.
>>2133144Just so we're clear I'm not demanding anything I'm just reflecting on what makes a mission fun or boring

I thought it was the coolest shit and couldn't wait for the technology to get better. how did the reality end up being so gay and stupid?
>>2133309but the tech DID get better, the steam deck is good
how do I get better at aoe2? I suck ass against normal difficulty skirmish AI and keep getting fucked in the campaigns on normal difficulty as well. is it a simple matter of continuing to bash my head into the wall until I git gud, or is there some secret zen technique that will unlock the ability to beat the AI easily?

>>2133380>>2133388While correct, let's not pretend that's the reason it's popular.
>>2132744Stuff like Tamerlane or Jadwiga, where you must overcome limitations and your strategy needs to be more elaborate than "just TC boom and spam units down a corridor", which was the case in 90% of AoK campaigns.Building an economy can be fun, but the "do these side objectives and you get X resources every few minutes" can also be enjoyable, removes the temptation to just sit back and boom; it's especially funny since when I was a kid I absolutely HATED the escort missions where you're just given some huge initial army (like Barbarossa 5) but nowadays I can appreciate them since they can be really interesting if done well. But I think a the main issue just boils down to the AI being a pain in the cock to fight against: I don't care if you use triggers or diplomacy or whatever, but shit like pic related turns a mission from "Wow this is interesting, I wonder how I'll tackle it" to "Eh gotta cheese it with towers, what a shame">11th century southern Italy, Robert Guiscard has to carve himself a small barony by exploiting the feuds between nearby warring factions>whole map is fully static, nobody actually does anything>as soon as you get a TC, Saracens begin trickling galleys and transports in your general directions>the pirates that supposedly "threaten all of Italy" will just make a beeline for your buildings no matter what>Saracens, Normans, Longobards and Byzantines will all happily fight alongside each other just to fuck with the playerYay I am truly immersed nowIt's like Dos Pilas, where you're supposed to be taking part in a much greater conflict but instead everyone is allied with everyone and nobody does anything except for raiding you

What the fuck are Gurjaras? What are they supposed to do? All their units suck, all their bonuses are side-grades.I don’t even want to play their campaign. This civ is just ass.
>>2133986It's a cavalry civ just make cavalry you motherfucker
>>2133351never did the art of war challenges>>2133363I'll check it out, thanks anon>>2133969I've beat all of the SC2 campaigns on hard as well as the hard skirmish AI so it's not like I have zero RTS experience, but I admit that SC2 is a much easier game than AoE2DE. >>2134028They're not byzantines. They wish.
>>2134092Wrong, Gurjaras are a bigger counter civ than Byzantines areFor reference, FU Gurjara Heavy Camels easily defeat FU Byzantine Elite Cataphract, 2500 gold 2500 food on each side, 41 camels vs 33 catas, and Chakrams fuck up both halbs and skirms; only differences is that Byz can turtle, Gurjaras cant
hey guys, spirit of the law herein this video we're going to be counting down the 9 digits of your social security numberstarting off with number 5
>>2134100Why would byz make catas against gurjaras? They can just go arbs and rape.
>>2134125>Why would byz make catas against gurjaras?Catas can be used against most camels, except Gurjaras, is not uncommon to see>They can just go arbs and rape.Gurjaras will simply go protoss cavalry to rape your arbs, and chakrams can rape any supporting halbs and if they get meatshielded can still kill many arbsGurjaras are a better counter-civ than Byzantines. This is a fact.
>>2134028>>2134100Yeah, they're always been a counter civ by design, just in a different manner than Byzantines. But instead of trash, the emphasis is on gold counter units with camels and Indian Tron and Master Chief LARPers, the caveat is that nothing can be fully upgraded.
>>2134133What hard-counters Gurjaras?Infantry early game before they get Chakrams, then halbs and siege?
>>2134135I mean, in practice Gurjaras aren't anywhere as strong anymore and they're at the bottom if you're tierfagging. They do have a higher winrate against some cavalry civs, but seemingly lose often against infantry ones, yet interestingly Ethiopians are their worst matchup and they're an archer civ. Whether that's Royal Heirs and/or faster firing archers doing the legwork, I wouldn't know.Anyway, 2 of 3 key units being cavalry is one thing, also forcing engagements they can't take comfortably is another, since in practice somebody can't always expect to feasibly maintain a decent amount of every gold unit, even if two of them take the same techs. Denied gold is probably going to sting just as much as it does for Turks.
>>2134142>Whether that's Royal Heirs and/or faster firing archers doing the legwork, I wouldn't know. It's probably both, also Ethios do have SOs, BBCs and halbs, which destroys Gurjaras
>>2133416>to take control of Sicily, you must complete these secondary objectives to eventually assassinate the emirs deep inside their fortified cities>or you can just watch the emirs kill themselves on any random fortification in your baseYe I think something's fucked here>>2133443Didn't even build a single tower this time, it came with the turf>>2134142>Denied gold is probably going to sting just as much as it does for Turks. It does much more, at least Turks are guaranteed to get some value out of a small number of jannies/CA due to their nature as ranged units (and jannies needing no upgrades)Chakrams/camels can't touch xbows and are very situational, while shrivamshas just feel horrible in small numbers
so...Chronicles 2 when?
I would be happy buying new campaigns for the next 10 years with as many factions as they want while MP players scream and gnash their teeth at the balancing issues of 100 civs
>>2134646Glad the Hippeus was reworked into something that plays into the usage of Polemarchs better.
>>2134661samejust do better than 3 kingdoms slop tho.
>>2134669>the Hippeus was reworkedwhen?I haven't touched any Chronicles civ since completing the campaign
>>2134688Latest update changed a lot about the Battle for Greece civs. Apart from Hoplite changes, Spartans are the least changed other than a unique tech being fixed and another shuffling out the infantry bonus damage reduction for a higher cap on Hoplite armor stacking, but the Hippeus now gains increased aura buff effects from a Polemarch, so they'll attack much faster and also either move or regenerate quicker than other infantry.
>>2134691>increased auraFr? No cap?
>>2134691that's pretty coolI really liked sending out blobs of regenerating infantry as them
>>2134705I like to take the movement speed, but regeneration differentiates more and makes sense if you have to bunker down or don't have to move long distances. In any case it gives Hippeus a bit more niche as a bulky or bodyguard unit.>>2134692They be cooking
