IMO dow2 was less of an RTS game than dow3.
Not sure why everyone says dow3 was a moba when in dow2 you literally control a hero unit and only a handful of support units. At least in 3 you control an army.

Doesn't have to be. At least its a dev team that knows RTS. Nothing wrong with Iron Harvest besides the technical inexperience the studio clearly had. Now it's like what, 5 years later?
There's a good chance they have improved.
>>
>>2128391
5 years of mobile game slop must have honed their skills, yeah.
>>
>>2127779
I genuinely don’t understand why this enrages neckbeards so much. Out of all the bullshit GW pulls and has pulled lately, the primaris really isn’t a big deal.
>>
>>2128444
Imo, the worst part of it is how it clashes tonally with the setting. Technology is stagnant and lost, humanity forgot how to produce half the shit they used to know how to make, treasured relics are irreplaceable and carefully passed down, new(er) shit is always watered down and weaker than older tech... oh shit look out here comes a bunch of amazing magical tech that puts everything to shame, I invented all of this cool new shit no one has ever seen before and everything is upgraded and shiny and new! Just seems fucking stupid to me. I don't know why GW didn't just release larger scale models of all the old shit, if that's all it was about.
>>
>>2128447
Yeah, it's this. It just doesn't feel plausible for the setting that it is. New shit just isn't how 40k works, the whole point of the setting is technological stagnation. Primaris would work in a setting like Star Wars where tech is still advancing (albeit slowly), it doesn't work in 40k.

The fact that it's all done by one dude makes it worse. It could be a bit more plausible if they were like yeah, Mars' best magi have been working on this big project for ages but no, it's just one guy. Technological development at that kind of level doesn't work like that and if one dude could whip out this sort of thing you'd expect it to happen constantly.

Also the new helmet designs suck.
>>

Also regarding guns

Space Marine 1 did Space Marine theme better than Space Marine 2.

Well, there are army abilities, same shit from 2. Squads come out in full sizes, but you can replenesh them everywhere and there is a retreat button from 2.
Covers are more simple, whole unit gets bonus to protection.
There are bunkers you can build and units can go inside.
Well, there are tech buildings and tech to research and apparently tech is free but it takes a long time to research stuff. Some examples like more armour and faster point capture.
You can equip squads with different weapons as well, and there might be an option to upgrade this chosen weapon further. And you can upgrade commanders as well. Commanders also way weaker than DoW3 commanders.
Requisition and Power is back, you need to capture points to get these resources and you can build additional generatiors for power points.
Seems like Space Marines can build anywhere and their buildings build themselves, but they build slower more further from HQ.
Necrons spread creep and Admech build in their own power field, like protoss. Orks drop buildings too but I don't know how this is different from Space Marines.
There is also a unit cap of 300, all released footage barely show even 150 cap.
Overall it seems like a huge mash of DoW1 and DoW2 mechanics with more leaning towards 1. Although visual design resembles DoW3 the most, but at least it's doesn't presents itself as a gookclicker.

>>
>>2130039
Was there a single 40k strategy for PC past decade that doesn't have faction DLCs?
>>
>>2130051
Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2 had every faction in a base game. This fucked them over since they had nothing to make dlcs out of since BFG has limited potential. Then it got only Chaos campaign dlc, but Chaos was a faction in a base game already, which was honestly a mistake and was apparently boring just like Nid and Necron base game campaigns. Imperium campaign was cool since you had few factions to make fleets out of. Ynnari campaign would be a better idea since you would get to use 3 factions (Craftworld, Corsair and Deldar) just like Imperium did, on top of having really different gameplay, but it never happened.

Game was abandoned after this and they went to make that Aliens: Dark Descent RTT game

Well, I guess they wanted to represent their slow expansion style that way, forcing them to only build in places they control. Actually it's called Necron Matrix, you spread it everywhere. The more you spread, the more resources you get to build and equip units.

Every faction was in the base game because it would have been retarded to release a sequel with less content than the predecessor (which is what so many modern games try anyways).

The problem was just that their publisher went through some kind of financial trouble and stabbed the devs in the back. They made a grudgepost about it a while back. They were almost forced to abandon development of the DLC and had to rush it out to avoid the window closing on them, and were forced to abandon the game immediately after because they no longer had the rights for it.

There were lots of future plans for the game including DLCs and the initial release was financially successful. They just got fucked by their publisher.
>>
>>2129881
The game is basically DoW1 again with a fresh coat of paint. Just about the only thing borrowed from 2 is global abilities, which they're repurposing as a vehicle for Stratagems from tabletop.

Which is honestly fine? I think DoW2 was a genuinely good game but it's the kind of ambitious design that requires a really talented dev to pull off. I wouldn't trust any modern developer to make a DoW2 2 as good as what DoW2 was. DoW1's model is much more conventional, and thus harder to fuck up.
>>
>>2130245
>DoW1's model is much more conventional, and thus harder to fuck up
Somehow Relic managed that. Now it's basically studio with a single RTS and bunch of mobile games. That doesn't bode well.
>>
>>2130254
DoW3 wasn't following DoW1's model. It was following League of Legend's model.
>>
>>2130245

>you control a small number of units
>but the combat effectiveness of those units varies radically based on their positioning, they each have 2-4 upgrade options and 1-3 active abilities which constitute the vast majority of their combat effectiveness
>these units must be split across a wide map with a dozen control points and 3 victory points that must be fought over to control simultaneously.
In principle the concept is 'what if you had fewer units but had way more buttons to press to control each unit and had to multitask to manage multiple combats at different places simultaneously.'

It's pretty unique in that it's designed entirely around combat micro and space control, to the extent that your economy has relatively little impact on the strength of the army you field outside of your opponent's ability to tax you over the course of a match by killing units or destroying your generators. As opposed to most RTS where your build order and macro-efficiency means one side is always hitting the field with a stronger army come first engagement. Before CoH1 and DoW2, there was nothing really like that. Their success (as well as the fact that DoW2 was given away to eastern europeans for free) spawned an entire genre of (mostly slavjank) micro-oriented RTTs.
>>
>>2130326
its the same shit in dow1 you just have more
>>
>>2130326
>but the combat effectiveness of those units varies radically based on their positioning,
Lol if only DoW2 had this crap developed correctly.
Earth2160 had positioning with front armour and back armour on tanks getting different damages and where you could equip these with different armour against different weapons.
And it was full RTS.
DoW2 on the other hand was watered down DoW1 where the whole positioning bullshit was really crap. It would have worked better if it was RTT with single units and with real cover mechanics like in RTT games. But Relic did not know what they wanted to do with DoW2. To make it RTS, RTT, RPG or top-down twinstick shooter.

It would have been so much more thematic of Belisarius Cawl to have uncovered, even more or less single-handedly, a pristine manufactorum full of Archeotech buried deep under some planet and spent thousands of years adapting that.
That way we GW could still have got their new models to sell in a way that was consistent with the setting.
But respecting the fluff and being capable of good writing are not things that GW does, really.

I never put Flamers on any units. It just gets them killed and the suppossed "morale" damage it does is pointless.

Why have flamers at all when I can have two squads of plasma guns, one heavy bolter and one missile?
>>
>>2134980
Flamers are cheaper and it's first upgrade you can get. Problem is they are also not very good. Or good at all. The only time I remember flamers being good is Possed Squad, gives them "ranged" attack option and wargear for Chaos Lord in Soulstorm campaign. Heavy flamer might be good. But by the point you get them it's a waste.
>>
>>2134980
Flamers can be good in a niche build for 1v1 multiplayer. In an even fight, breaking enemy morale tanks their damage output, forcing them to flee or die. I don’t generally use them but they’re not useless.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it's a small closed map, you build buildings which produce units and you are trying to kill enemy bases. How is this not the classic RTS formula? There might be some extra fluff but the core gameplay looks very similar and that begs the question: Why bother. This stuff was already seen at the turn of the millenium.

Or I guess Company of heroes is closer but still. What's the point apart from the WH40k skin? What's the novelty?
>>
>>2136021
>Or I guess Company of heroes is closer but still
"But still"? First DoW game and later Company of Heroes were the most serious attempts in 00s to move away from C&C/WarCraft RTS formula of 90s. It's like you were to compare a modern first person shooter to Quake, and when eyebrows were raised replied "or I guess Call of Duty is closer whatever". Rather inconsiderate of you.
>What's the point apart from the WH40k skin? What's the novelty?
Should there absolutely be novelty? First game was released 21 years ago, second one 16 years ago (third one doesn't count), and they are still well liked and well remembered, despite their flaws. I think that's reason enough. Or literally any game should be novel or otherwise it has no raison d'être?
>>
>>2136019
>How is this not the classic RTS formula?
you don't collect resources, you capture points on the map which generate requisiton points and defend them to keep the generation going
you don't produce units, you produce unit squads which can be replenished in the field
this is not the classic RTS formula, it's a blend of tactics and strategy. Very different gameplay from C&C in practice
>Or I guess Company of heroes is closer but still.
C&C is nothing like company of heroes, you're comparing apples to oranges
>>
>>2136038
>the most serious attempts in 00s to move away from C&C/WarCraft RTS formula of 90s
Sure but they are essentially still the same.
>Or literally any game should be novel or otherwise it has no raison d'être?
Yes, This is the issue. I already played CoH to death so a reskin is is pointless from my perspective.
>>
>>2134980
Broken morale halves the ranged damage a unit does, and doubles the melee damage they take.
Early on, scouts with sniper rifles can break enemies for assault marines to kill.
Of course, this strategy doesn’t work against high morale units, and once the enemy can outmuscle the assault marines or kill the scouts, you should have already transitioned into a better unit like a dreadnought or Grey Knights.

>what? don't fire warriors just mow down guardsmen with zero effort?
They're made of paper mache and grenades ragdoll them all around. Usually one dies on the first grenade volley alone, before they even finish setting up to fire.
And remember, this is during the first five minutes of the game, so I can count the number of fire warrior models I have on one hand. They spawn in groups of three, cost 210 to build and 70 to reinforce vs 160+20 for a Guard. The numbers don't add up.
>also might want to try that commander snare ability, bait them first then freeze and kill them
They can still fire while in snare, and even then, it's a christmasland scenario where I need to hope 2+ squads of grenadiers all walk into a trap while my guys are still alive.
>and use your commander to harass him early, every LP delayed is one grenade squad less
This is post-harass. By this point in the game I've usually killed either a generator or LP with my vespids.

So, the solution is to hope my opponent is fully retarded? I'm asking how to beat competent opponents.
>>
>>2136248
oof, this must be soulstorm because tau were a lot scarier in dc
maybe you just weren't aggressive enough with your commander? do you give him a flamer and keep his squads broken? iirc he should be immune to grenade knockdown so the only thing that can actually threaten him early game is the command squad
and mind your positioning, if you know he has grenades don't lump your fws together and keep them in cover as much as possible
I don't know how experienced you are, so I'm throwing basic advice around
if you can, share a replay or two so people can pick your games apart and figure out what you need
>>
>>2136242
grenade guardsmen were always really good at early-mid game, there is not a whole lot you can do other than tie them up in melee or out-tech them.

if you can rush for the skyray barrage you can delete 4 squads. Early game tau can be really weak if the opponent knows to keep pushing you, you gotta find the opportunity to get resource advantage somehow

desu i dont really know myself, would a shield drone work? Maybe stealth suit schenanigans?

>>2136235
tau listening posts are terrible and they got no turrets

So I play DoW:DE since release and I got my hands on Iron Harvest yesterday for 5$.
And I do not see why are people shitting themselves that DoW4 will be bad because Iron Harvest is bad.
Iron Harvest's most problematic thing is fucked up cover system (which will not be the same in DoW4) and barebones base building like in CoH2.
The rest of the gameplay is OK and will fit DoW theme nicely if they do proper basebuilding and squad reinforcing.
Only thing I would say should really go is UI with all regiments seen at bottom. It is completely unnecessary and stupid when you have too many regiments.
>>
>>2136870
>t. played the game for 15 minutes and only vs easy AI
the game is fundamentally flawed because it encourages you to avoid combat and capture mines while roaming the map
>>
>>2136907
And DoW4 will have mines?
>>
>>2136907
>>2136918
PS. Iron Harvest is based on Scythe in which you also avoid combat for most game and just capture resources.
>>
>>2136918
no, but it will have devs who don't understand the genre or what makes it good
>>
Speaking of mines, does anyone use Mine Fields in DoW 1? I swear I've seen no-one but me build them.
>>
>>2137088
they are very situational but having a bunch of infantry like guardsmen or orks run into them is very satisfying
>>
>>2137088
I use sometimes when I have too much resources and map has a chokepoint where enemy will surely wander into them.

>>2137036
ah apparently you are just contrarian retard seething at everything just to seethe. Surely the main problem for you will be population cap and camera zoom like all total annihilation retards who shit over every single RTS forums with their shitty demands for game to be next total annihilation.
>>
>>2137116
>Surely the main problem for you will be population cap and camera zoom
no you dumb fucking nigger, I already explained why iron harvest is bad and why therefore the devs don't understand the genre. Shut the fuck up and go back where you came from
>>
>>2137136
yeah you explained iron harves is bad because it is bad and you do not like it. There was completelu no objective argument against iron harvest.
While the only thing against iron harvest is cover mechanics and stupid AI. The rest of the game works fine. Only retards like you think otherwise. If IH was bad they wouldn't get DoW4.
>>
>>2137146
Iron harvest was bad because it was a pointless CoH clone. DaW4 will be bad because it will be a pointless CoH clone. Maybe they should use their game studio for creating something new instead.
>>
>>2137146
No, it really didn't.
Damage models were wonky and inconsistent, art direction was poor, story was absolutely terrible.
>>
>>2137146
please explain how did you arrive at
>yeah you explained iron harves is bad because it is bad and you do not like it.
from this:
>the game is fundamentally flawed because it encourages you to avoid combat and capture mines while roaming the map
you must be the dumbest, niggerest monkey in all of reddit
>>
>>2137088
I played an FFA recently where a guards player spent the entirity of his time in the match building up a massive minefield in front of his base and turtling behind it. in the end it didnt save him from destruction but when i first tried to go after him moving over the mines fucked up my army and he backted it up with grenades and basilisks so the option was to get artilleried or die goin thru the mines
of course it was futile cause he only had the cap points in his base but mines can be good if youre persistent i guess
i think most people dont bother is cause the game encourages going on offense
>>
>>2137213
>>2137231
none of this is objective opinion about why the game is bad.
It is your subjective opinion that you did not like the gameplay or artstyle it does not address any objective issues with the game.
And calling any DoW game a CoH clone as a problem, while in fact DoW since number 1 is CoH - this clearly shows how stupid you are.
Why are you even in this thread if you are not interested in the series? Are you masochist? Or just profoundly retarded?

Oh you are from reddit, that explains your illiteracy. What are your pronouns while at it I do not want to offend xir further?
>the game is fundamentally flawed because it encourages you to avoid combat and capture mines while roaming the map
It is not a flaw and not a fundamental. It is just a gameplay you do not like.
Fundamental flaw would be if you had to win game by controling points but it would be easier to just kill enemy. Or if you still had to take points after eliminating every enemy on the map.
And avoiding combat + capturing mines is exactly how Scythe boardgame, which inspired Iron Harvest, is played despite having armies, mechs and zeppelins on board.
So again it is not a flaw, and definitely not fundamental. It is purposefully made gameplay that you do not like. And you can not like this gameplay. Yet it is not flawed fundamentally. You have to learn what some words mean before you jump into discussion with grown ups.

Just played DE or DoW1 Multiplayer for the first time since I was a kid.
I won 5 outta 5 as IG, man this game feels pretty good despite the age.
>>
>>2137088
I should try to use them next time I play. I do think part of the problem is that how useful they'd be is entirely army dependent (both you and your enemy). If I remembered they existed, they'd probably work best against Sisters or Chaos when playing Guard since the enemy is less likely to be expecting an infiltrated unit and detectors would be slightly less common. If I remember right mines also don't work against infiltrated units because the mines are "attacking" the enemy.

>>2137213
There's also the fact that many of the mech units were unresponsive as hell because half the time they were stuck in some kind of animation that left you unsure if the unit was ever going to act. It was a CoH clone that learned none of the lessons from CoH 1 or 2. I think the most damning anecdote I could give about the game is that the arrival of a T-70 in CoH2 feels more impactful than a mech showing up in IH.
>>
>>2137766
How does the DE handle having all the games in one? Can you pick "vanilla dow1" ruleset, and "WA ruleset", and so on, or is it all just smeared into Soulstorm?
>>
>>2137853
As far as I can tell, its all the campaigns, but skirmish and MP is Sovlstorm
>>
>>2137853
Campaigns are unchanged, skirmish is Soulstorm only, haven't touched the MP, but I would assume it's the same as skirmish.

That’s disappointing. I didn’t care for DC and never played Soulstorm, that might kill the DE for me.

im a random picker with one strategy per army but i would say if ur not getting grenades asap get them. also if you find yourself being pushed back utilize your bunkers. IG are an army with decent defense and if you move your guys into an infantry post or other building you save so much req you would have spent reinforcing. i think conceptually IG gameplay simulates WW1 where you push forward while building your front line bases behind the push to fall back to. their turrets early game are also some of the best and can buy you some time until vehicles

How do you counter early game Grenade Launcher? It fucking shreds even SM
I guess early SM should have more Assault Marines + Commander?
>>
>>2139561
tying them up in melee is your best bet. hard part is theyre guard so theyll probably have more squads so you gotta commit to melee.
>>
>>2139561
I got cooked by this SM player who started double assault marines then just flew into my base and decapped my points before I even could access GLs
>>
>>2139906
If SM can get two assault squads fly to your base and decap them (so he needs to destroy listening post - right?) before you can get GLs then you are clearly not playing the game correctly.

I've only played for two days. But my idea was to build listening posts on the points outside my base, which usually is a good idea vs Tactical blob.

So the guy who has to build barracks + tech building can get two full suqads of assualt marines and go through whole map to you.
While in the same time you cannot get barracks + tech building to get equip your guardsmen (which you do not need to train again like SM has to) with grenade launchers?

And you build listening posts everywhere and upgrade them if you can as they increase your income. Plus after building listening post you get ~50% requisition back instantly. You have to build listening posts everywhere you can. Unless you want to starve yourself.
>>
>>2139954
No, he had just 2 squads of 5man Assault marines, and he refused to fight my 3 fully squaded Guardsmen, he just decapped and ran away until he was tier 2 and I was still in Tier 1.

I fought him the very next game and then he tried to decap my base points with scouts, but I fought them off and wiped them. That game was alot closer, It was a back and forward until I wiped his force commander and a squad of tacticals. I got my mech depot up and got 2x Hellhounds and 3 Chimeras up, but he then counterattacked with Grey Knights who then just tanked 3 squads of guardsmen, all my mech without taking a loss then rocket launcher tac's wiped my mechanized units.

I don't really understand how to deal with power armored factions, they just bleed me dry on requisition, If I go grenade launchers I will get out tech'd, If I rush tech I get ran over by flamer squads or melee squads.

I really think DoW 4 will bomb for a few reasons.
First and foremost, Nu-Hammer is shit, looks like shit and plays like shit.
Secondly, I guarantee they won't have any real mod support to speak of, probably coded in such a way to minimize what the user can change.
Third, the studio behind it just isn't talented at all. Iron Harvest was their only other title that wasn't mobile slop and it was mixed at best.

Really, they couldn't find ANY other RTS devs? Eugene too busy being French and retarded? Relic too busy going under?

Damn I've played Iron Harvest lately and it is a completely medicore game with campaign that bored me to death (didn't even finish it) due to how horribly boring and bland the gameplay is.
And looking at gameplay pieces they posted online and youtubers playing it it looks like DOW4 will be just reskin of IH which is reskin of COH2. Which looks bad.

Push hard in T1 when it's just cultists. Try to pick off heretics early, especially if they are already weak from forced labor. Assault marines can be helpful either tying up cultists, bashing LP/gens or hunting heretics.
Chaos has to sacrifice quite a few resources to tech up and get out the machine pit, give them as little breathing room as possible before that happens.
