I can still play open ended sandbox games and I like building for aesthetics (though I'm not that good at it in any game), but I can't just wilfully play the game "wrong" in general. Maybe this is some sort of challenge or competitiveness thing. You might be right that it has to feel like some sort of "achievement" no matter how petty and not just play in the way child does.
