Hi /vst/. My backlog urges and I sincerely need help clearing some titles here and there. At least "giving these a decent run" will be enough for me since they were sorta gifted by someone special which I miss every single day. So sorry for blogposting, it's just that my dad passed away some months ago due to a battle with a long illness. But ok with that so where do I start? My last strategy experience was probably Stronghold crusader or something in the likes of it. I'm no pro but at least I'm curious. These were his favorite games, they do seem peculiar and odd choices and yes I intend to play these (not ckII, not eu IV, not heroes III or patrician III and so on, you got the gist of the whole ordeal). I looked into his gog profiles and he played these a bunch: > For The Glory: A Europa Universalis Game> Crusader Kings Complete> Europa Universalis: Rome Gold> Anno 1602 A.D.> Patrician> Close Combat: Last Stand Arnhem> Strategic Command: American Civil War> Heroes of Might and Magic® 2> Warlords III: Darklords RisingSo where do I start? Where do I go from here? I wanna honour the old man's memory, that's it. Any tips, playthroughs, yt vids? Mods? Thanks and I sincerely appreciate the effort here, best 4chan sub for real.
>>2142501>best 4chan subYou need to go back, but I'll help you first. If you're not into strategy games yet, ask yourself, what would be most appealing to you based on your current preferences. For example, crusader kings and eu are very much acquired tastes, so unless you find the premise to be appealing, you might wanna play 'em later. Some of the games you posted are very different from each other, so look the games up, and pick whatever interests you most first. You'll probably figure any of them out eventually, if you stick long enough with them (if not, just play a different game and return later). What other kinds of games do you play?
>>2142501RIP to your dad, newfag. He had good taste. That being said most of these are pretty ancient games. I wouldn't recommend EU:Rome or CK1 at all, far too many jank issues. CK2 is free to play so you could at least check it out to see if it's something you'd be at all interested in, really either you have the paradox map autism gene or you don't (though CK2 also appeals to people who like RPGs due to the character focus).
>>2142735>most appealing to you based on your current preferencesI kinda guess... Warlords? Close Combat? I remember playing the second ages ago.
>>2142735>so unless you find the premise to be appealing, you might wanna play 'em later. Thanks based anon but I wanna demolish the "trash" first. I mean, these games were somehow regarded as being innovative and good on their releases so yeah.
>>2142735>What other kinds of games do you play?I'll literally play anything mate. Never tried stuff such as fortnite or roblox, call of duty or whatever, too old for that. My last 15 or 20 played games:>Webbed (yeah)>Warhammer 40k speed freeks>Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration>Sheep (oldschool)>Sine Mora>Sébastien Loeb Rally EVO>some sudden strike II matches>S.w.i.n.e HD>Poly Bridge 2>Legions of Ashworld>Namco Museum archives on the ps4 (nes old namcot games)>Bugriders - The Race of Kings>Journeyman Project Pegasus Prime>Drakensang 1>hmmm Redneck rampage I guess? dunno
>>2142742>RIP to your dad, newfag. He had good tasteI almost cried here man thanks a lot for the comment. He had these games on gog.com>>2142742>I wouldn't recommend EU:Rome or CK1 at all, far too many jank issues.I know, I know. But I'd love to try, anyway. At least give 'em some decent runs at least. I remember seeing the old man marvelously diggin' these and some other stuff like Dominions IV and slitherine games. Probably had some autism spectrum disorder (ASD) but has not received a formal diagnosis afaik.>>2142742>really either you have the paradox map autism gene or you don't I guess I do which is great. I did play some March of the Eagles and Sengoku (odd pair I know) when they came out and found it to be very time consuming and demanding but seriously addictive. Never game ckII a decent amount of time, though.
>>2143001>Dominions IV and slitherine gamesYep, definitely good taste (and autism). Dominions games are great, recommend playing whatever the latest one is but they all just add stuff incrementally so if you have IV and want to try it out then it'll be fine. The very historically/mythologically informed faction design is all top notch. You can have a lot of fun as a noob messing around in single player before you start to learn how to exploit the dumb AI and need to move on to the very active async multiplayer scene.
>>2142993Then go ahead, champ!
>>2142999>S.w.i.n.e HD>sudden strike II>well, sounds like you do have some strategy experience
>>2143217>The very historically/mythologically informed faction design is all top notch. You can have a lot of fun as a noob messing around in single player before you start to learn how to exploit the dumb AI and need to move on to the very active async multiplayer scene.Any more interesting tips? So many factions to chose from. Got Dominions 4 here also
>>2142742>I wouldn't recommend EU:RomeI remember he talking briefly about mods and all for this one but can't find anything.
>>2143283>some strategy experienceI wouldn't call that experience man hah. I'm just in the planning phase here but overall it's all looking great.
>>2142742>That being said most of these are pretty ancient games.Yeah, I second that. Even by standards of strategy games where the change in graphics is less relevant and trends/design change slower they are going to feel outdated and they aren't really the ones that are usually considered classics either.
The dealbreaker here is that I don't think I'm mentally capable of handling these games but probably that's just me. But I really really wanna try these, honour the old man and stuff. Sorry again for blogposting.
>>2145425>feel outdated and they aren't really the ones that are usually considered classics either. That's why they somehow pander to me the most.
>>2145426Start with TBS. If you can, with those that came out on consoles too. Those are quite retard proof - xcom, new civs, that kindThen slowly move onto slower rts, again preferably that came out on consoles - endwar is probably the perfect candidate. I too was a strategy brainlet. Still am but at least i can play a bit rts
>>2145410Middle Age Ulm is the easiest faction to start with since they have great basic troops and very little magic to deal with, also thematically they're really cool especially if you're a HREwanker. Early/Middle Age Abysia also good for noobs, very good troops and really only fire magic to deal with which is very easy to understand, just research evocation and watch your guys pew pew enemy armies down with fireballs.Ultimately though if a faction's lore really speaks to you then just try them out, even if they're a more "advanced" nation you'll still have fun and a fighting chance against the kinda dumb AI. You really don't have to worry about playing optimally at all against the AI
