Pretty happy with the Wizard+Necromancer route they went for in homm2 though.
Themes weren't as strong as the original 4, but still good.
I think homm1/2 farm/knight and homm1/2/3 forest/sorceress/rampart are my fav designs in the series.
Tower in homm3 and academy in homm4 are good too.

First of all, it's "Castles" and "Hills" (and "Forests" but that's minor).
Second, only the Forests creatures have a proper theme to them because all of them are either straight from folklore or got some minor modernisations (elves and trolls primarily). Castle creatures might have also became the foundation of the Knight's troops in the first Heroes game but they lack a proper faction feel. They're only a faction because they're not what everything else is: normal humans. Hills have a wild mix with the only unifying theme being "they are typically found in the hills or mountains in fantasy". Dungeons is just undead plus demons. Plains creatures are the only ones that are a leftovers camp.
Generally attempting to make a faction out of odds and ends produces rather sad results.
Finally, there are no spiders, werewolves or golems in KB.

Three of the factions in H1 are varying degrees of messed up and H2 inherited quite a lot of that.
Swamp really only works with Fortress in H3.

Death's campaign is fun when you aren't facing undead. So other Death creatures and almost everything else. It's not common but does happen and then you feel like your hero is a poweful necromancer. But you really should invest into at least one other magic school, ideally all three (not having Combat for defence and resistance is the real misery).
Other than that it's great. And Nature's is just great all the way from start to finish. And Orders is very good and definitely better than that of Chaos. Life's campaign is the only comparable to the Chaos one.

Unified Enroth(continent) faction in homm3 logic
wip name: Palace

Necromancers ousted.
purple dragon from warlocks
orcs and ogres from barbarians, Maximus and Tyro makes for fitting specialists
Dwarves and elves from sorceress
Maybe the knight/cavalier/champion could upgrade to a unicorn knight for extra sorc reference

Knights(named Paladin or Warlord to avoid overlapping names with Castle) covering the Might heroes, Sorceresses Magic. Considered sprinkling in other heroes, but probably not necessary, maybe a wizard or two.

Maybe a special building that lets them 'upgrade' Stronghold orcs and Rampart dwarves to Palace type of Orcs and Dwarves, like Gelu does with elves and marksmen.


Could maybe switch some units around.
Purple dragon is too iconic, elves fit well because of Sir Ector, same with ogres and orcs due to Tyro and Maximus. These Ogres wouldn't upgrade to ogre mages though like stronghold.
Dwarves could be ranged and Elves could be melee to make it more different from rampart, or just skip dwarves entirely.

III's Dungeon doesn't stay true to one theme imo. They're half underground half Greek mythos. Extra flyers and the best magic without the nerfs you feel as Tower.

Do a Cult class that focuses on status effects and weirdness. Unraveling the opposition being the focus over preservation of units. Keep them cartoony 3d rather than hyper grimdark.

I like the factions to play differently rather than being all the same under a different paint job.

I do think it's the best change going from homm2 to homm3.
Really the addition of genies does so much for me.

I don't hate homm2 wizard, it is interesting seeing like a mix of frontier western badlands, but with medieval castles, but the creature setup feels a bit weak in terms of implied lore.
Like it's the Mage/Archmage and their golems, and then a bunch of bullshit.
Sure the Roc is thematic for the terrain, the halflings because Gandalf+Hobbit connection, and the pig is like a whatever creature you could see paired with the halflings, and then giants/titans who are cool, but they're not really adding to the sapient core of the faction.
It's like wizards and random friends.
For Tower it's more of an alliance of genies+mages+gremlins. Naturally magical genies makes for a neat ally of wizards, as does mechanically inclined gremlins for the golem-making wizards.
Gargoyle is pretty good as another construct.
Titan is less cool than in homm2 imo, and I wouldn't want it gone, but it also doesn't feel as important to me. Naga kind of the same, it's a neat creature, but it doesn't have as much personality as the genies do.
Not having Genies there would almost feel like not having Dwarves/Elves for Rampart.

I like the snow.
I think a cracked wasteland still could've worked.
I feel like an inhospitable terrain kinda helps the feel with the golem factory, like that wouldn't look cool if the wizard town was in some grassland, or even a swamp.

HoMM 2-3 3DO (if you really into retro games might as well try old Might&Magic RPG series (I personally like Xeen duology for it's pixel art)). Try Chronicles if you really fell in love with HoMM 3, later proceede to mods.
HoMM 4 for kino campaign and OST, but meh execution of anything else.
HoMM 5 is only noteworthy Ubisoft game of the series (SkillWheel mod is musthave). Basically refined (game-design) amalgation of 3 and 4 along with original ideas.

I played it. The artstyle is meh, some things look okay, most of it looks like most other boring nu-fantasy shit. I feel like it was clearly designed to be a mobile game from the ui to the controls to the graphics. Not to say it wasn't any fun, but a lot of what makes homm 3(and 4, yes I'm a homm4fag) great is it's presentation, which I'm not to fond of in this game.

The battlefield is smaller and the AI in this game is too smart. I'm used to kiting in HoMM3 where the AI is dumb, but in this game, they don't get baited by your 1-stack, so it's super hard to take any fight without losses. Because of this, Necro is just going to be the most OP faction again

I found a funny bug in olden era. If your hero is flying, there are portals on the map and your hero is out of movement points you can tell him to reach any object beyond the portal and he will interact with it even if he can't actually reach it. You can just grab all the artifacts/resources and flag whatever mines you can see with no movement points.

Dungeon is pretty damn good at playing Might. Helps if you get the Ultimate to double your Might hero's Attack. Spells are good and easy to access so no reason not to use some good ones (Twilight, Favorable Winds, Blessing, etc) that do not rely on Spellpower.

What's the most interesting HOMM3 campaign? In terms of everything but mechanics and balance I love 2 was more than 3, but it's really hard to ignore how 3 plays.
Bonus points if you get to play as either the Dungeon faction or the Wizards for the duration of it as they're the ones I like the most, Undead are good too and the Swamp and Barbarians were alright. Fuck Inferno.
