JA2 Stracciatella finally got a new release after 2 years. This time with actual extensive playtesting so you can play the release build instead of having to switch to nightlies because someone broke burst fire sounds when externalizing the data to JSON.https://ja2-stracciatella.github.io/2025/09/28/release-0.22.0.html

JA2 1.12 will always be the best way to play the game. Stracciatella adds bugs of its own, and 1.13, while not bad, feels like a different game.
>>2158184Stracciatella is in a much better state now than previous release, and it's at the point now where it's easier to fix bugs in Stracciatella than patching 1.12 and compiling it (which is what I used to do because HP gain was broken in 1.12). There's still stuff that bothers me like the android port that shouldn't have been done at the expense of the desktop release (which bothered me so much I had to step through JA2's nightmarish global state to fix follow-up shot clicks being broken) and a maintainer adding rust to the project as a learning experience but what can you do.
>>2158196Also I don't have any cool screenshots because I just downloaded the new release on my current machine and have been messing with pixel perfect integer scaling on a 1440p monitor.
>>2158200>pixel perfect integer scaling on a 1440p monitorjust set the game to 1280x720
>>2158196Are you playing with any of these on?
>>2158222I use 1280x720 in 1.13 because all the gun ranges were adjusted for a wider viewport but for vanilla JA2 it feels wrong.>>2158223I use multiple interrupts and I increase the target refresh rate/fps from 40 to my monitor's refresh rate. Avoiding ambushes makes the AI less effective in my experience and staying on rooftops makes more sense in Unfinished Business where every encounter is pretty much handcrafted.
>>2158232AI avoiding ambushes makes it less effective?
>>2158240Allegedly it makes them gather just outside of the break light radius in night battles which is easier to game.
>>2158196Been playing the new release after work and it's been nice and stable. I haven't played since JA3 and even though I like that game it just can't beat 2's mechanical depth.
>>2159385Yeah, JA3 is in a weird spot. It's definitely the best JA2 sequel. But every time I play it, I just wish I was playing 2 instead. So there's no real reason to play 3. They tickle the same itch, but 2 does it better.
>>2158196the only thing i want in straciatella extra is that mod that change looks based on armor
>>2160544Might as well play 1.13 for that.
>>2161064>Might as well play 1.13no
All I want is 1.12 but with a custom party of 6 IMP mercs. Will this let me do that? 1.13 will, but I don't like 1.13, it changes too much shit, even in its "basic / vanilla" configuration. Many such cases.
>>2161197It's been mentioned but not implemented https://github.com/ja2-stracciatella/ja2-stracciatella/issues/1516
>>2158196Unfortunately, it looks like the latest release does have a bug related to the externalization of mercenary profiles which can be fixed by replacing the file in externalized/merc-relations.json with https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ja2-stracciatella/ja2-stracciatella/6a940b7e20a096e69c0de77590714d3b00184513/assets/externalized/mercs-relations.jsonOr by getting a hotfix version here:https://storage.googleapis.com/ja2-builds/index.html#releases/v0.22.1/

Damn I suck at this game now, getting ravaged by the AI on Expert in Cambria and there's an army of 26 guys coming after this battle. Still super satisfying.
>>2167906Expert wasn't fun for me, I had too much time in strategic mode training militias constantly or risking getting my towns taken.
>>2167906Second town and I got an AUG, an AK-74, and a Mortar.>>2167958I have Ira as a militia monkey.
>>2167980No idea what I'm going to do about this 26-man army coming my way. It's been too long.
Has anyone ever actually beaten JA1 or Deadly Games? I've tried the first game multiple times but bounce off it every time I try.
