So recently I have discovered Star Control II and I have greatly enjoyed it but I thought that it would be neat if it were a strategy game. And to my surprise, I've discovered that the first game was exactly that. But from what I've seen it is rather dated, and while it wouldn't be problem for me, I'm rather reluctant to pay for a game that should be abandonware by now. So, are there any good games about empire-building in space? I have heard mixed things about Stellaris. I've played Endless Space couple of years ago but did not enjoy it, it felt way too railroaded, with too much lore of which I cared little. I've played Aurora 4x and I believe I could enjoy it if I were to learn the mechanics.
