I played the closed beta version and I really liked it.
Besides the questionable art direction, it's amazing. It's a very good combination of Heroes 3 and 5, which are my favorites. The devs did a really really good job and they had all the QoL that existed in the HoTA mod already in the game, so they know what the player want

Took me a couple of tries with Temple but I have been able to beat one game in single hero mode and one regular game at 150% difficulty. It is pretty good so far! The addition of Laws to the game has added a lot more then I thought it would.

I find it pretty funny how gold orientated the Castle Laws are. Castles is also tied with Dungeon for the most expensive Law at 6 Law points but Castle gets theirs at Tier 2 while dungeon gets theirs at Tier 5. The fact that you can build twice in your cities can be massive. Going from struggling to get through the early game into suddenly drowning in gold was quite the experience.

The only thing that gave me trouble is the magic, where you have to hit 3 queen stacks with fireball every time or you don't have enough mp to finish the fight, had to retry like 5 times. Thankfully AI doesn't spread too much on purpose, but it does try to stay near the middle to be able to cut off you kiting.

The retreat and pathfinding missions were neat and good to remember, advanced combat was piss easy, it's just use your 1 unit stacks right.

I enjoyed the demo for what it was, but it doesn't control as snappy as HoMM3, the graphics are harder to read which makes picking up items harder, and for some reason the knights twirl their swords like gymnasts with a ribbon baton. It's okay I guess? I like the addition of laws but the UI is absolute dogshit while the graphics and artstyle are straight out of a generic mobile freemium game. If anything, it's worse in HOE. The easy accessibility of distant interaction and travel spells makes it way easier to chain transfer all army.

In H3 I would often leave like one t7 unit on secondary heroes to clear weak guards and fight off freshly hired enemy heroes with tavern army. Haven't found a reason to do it here, maybe on bigger maps with more players, the guards on 150-200% are too strong to fight without whole army.

Yeah, temples tier- 6 unit is a weird choice. They are super tanky and I am thinking of make them my main stack in another game Imma bout to run.

The horsemen also feel both frail and don't hit nearly hard enough to make them worth it. I just skip them entirely desu. I would rather get the range caster upgrade for damage and angels.

On another note the summoning rite for schism is a non-fun mechanic. Needing to have the entire stack die means you're reloading battles again and again until the AI finally decides to attack the units that you want. Also need to be careful not to have your units counterattack-kill and win the battle. It's just tedious.

It's not usually a problem to sacrifice troops from secondary castles when it's unupgraded t1-2, you'll just have to fight something that doesn't have enough speed to reach your mains. AI plans for at least 2 turns ahead, as long as it can't reach other targets within 2 turns, it won't ignore hitting the only stack in range.
But it wold definitely be easier if the ability would straight let you kill your own stack for that.

aaaand we're done with the latest playthrough. Kept changing factions and increasing difficulty after every win, this one was Schism at 175% difficulty. Some more thoughts:

It's basically a trap to make you think it is important and will make you reload battles over and over and over again until the AI decides to kill the stack that you want it to. All for a measly +5 units which - yes - it is useful in early at higher difficulties but is NOT worth wasint 15 mins on reloads for

It was the easiest template of all on 150%. The zone before arena has a bunch of buildings that give you super angels with 400hp and Dragon utopia, you should be clearing that on week 3-4. When I got to arena week 4, AI didn't even have t7 or had very little. Maybe on easy/normal AI actually does better on that map, stronger guards seem to gimp it a lot.

I should try it with different faction against necro, but I'm tempted to see if easy or normal actually makes it get to the treasure zones faster.

Alright lads, this has been my last playthrough for the time being. 22 hours in and finished 4 campaigns with all the races, increasing difficulty each time. Here are my latest thoughts for +200% difficulty Temple:

>Is temple the weakest faction?
Hard to say without PVP data. I have not felt a noticeable difficulty increase however. The strategy for Temple seems to be maxxing out on morale, daylight skill buffs and +% ranged damage. They have THREE long ranged units and ALL have laws increasing their growth and damage. Add to this a max-level blessing and maxx morale and you become a ranged powerhouse, 2 shotting everyone and decimating the enemy before his turn even begins due to high initiative (take the initiative law too). Weakening ray removes all counterattacks from all enemies at max level, meaning you are guaranteed to almost never lose any units against the NPC armies towards the mid-game. Take the upgraded units that give +stats on buffs (archangel, sun herald, sunspear etc). Max daylight + expert luck + expert morale = killing machine.

Oh and btw, ascension and buff copy are useless to. I NEVER lost a stack through the entire playthrough and NEVER had to copy buffs as I always used the buff-all ones.

Seems so. The AI in my 200% run was pretty much at the same unit stacks as the 150% one. The only difficulty for the player is the increased stack size in the early game, but you can bypass this with smart attacking choices, going for the easy fights, prioritizing getting your archer units etc. Resources are scarce for the first few weeks but once you get them going ++ upgraded ranged units you can start snowballing just as easily as on the other difficulties.

FUCK NO. I needed only 2 more skills and had 4 slots empty but the RNG completely FUCKED ME OVER and I could only get 4/5. It also forces you to get useless shit like summon avatar to get there - IT IS A TRAP. AVOID.

Yes. Summon avatar is useless, AVOID. Ascension and all the all-stack-must-die mechanics (looking at you, schism) are shit. Tactics, diplomacy, siegecraft, thaumaturgy are all weak. Resistance is weaker too since you want to kill the enemy before he gets the chance to hit you back with spells, and the strongest spells are all buffs/nerfs anyways rather than pure damage. Economy, recuitment, scouting are ok to have on secondaty heroes if you can level them up for free with XP-giving buildings

As I said in my previous post, they need to reduce the number of sets a little bit, it's too saturated. Also the lower-level items must be improved, as of now there is not much of a reason to keep anything <legendary and you're better off destroying them for dust which is CRUCIAL for those early game upgraded units. So you jump off from early mid game with 1/2 ok items at most, everything else is dust, and once your units are strong enough you'll instantly jump to many legendary/epic items instead of gradually building up your inventory

I am conflcited about it. On one hand it's cool that it makes getting higher tier units harder, but as I've described, if it means having to delete some items to get it (and you WILL do it since the upgraded units are so much more valuable) it becomes an anti-fun mechanic. You'll also be at the mercy of RNG, if you get lucky and get the buldings that generate it every week, or the one that lets you trade for dust you're good but if not you're fucked. So it also introduces multiplayer balance issues.

Honestly I'm starting to slowly warm up to them a little bit. Overhead map looks fine but the colors can really blend through in battles. Overall the color pallete between the factions should be more different to allow for clear differentiation

It's not really that they are small, it's that they are WAY too detailed for their size. It's admirable that they are paying so much attention to unit designs, but the amount of details often just blends together into a blob of indiscernible pixels. Whoever is their designer that got carried away on overdesigning the units, he desperately needs to remember that the most important part of the unit design is to define, mark and work on one or two main signature graphical characteristics of a unit or an upgrade and make those stand out before all else. The Royal Griffin in H3 are SNOW WHITE FEATHERED, the Succubi Mistresses from H5 are ON FIRE, the H3's Zealots' faces SHINE from under the hood, the Halberdiers have a HUGE FUCKOFF HALBERD. And so on. Adding details is ok, but they have to give every unit and upgrade a very clearly discernible feature that will make them exceptional, special and stand out.

What do I prio when building? Is it better to focus on a couple of units with upgrades or getting all the units first to maximize production?

How many heroes should I have? Figured getting one asap for covering more ground but it feels like a waste getting more than 3 until I get more unit production/cities.

Typically you want to have as many creature buildings as possible and an upgraded wall by the end of week 1. Then keep focusing on creatures until it looks like you can no longer fuel your economy by looting the map. At that point start building economic buildings.
The standard strategy is to buy a secend hero immediately and focus all troops on your main hero, while using the other one to pick up unguarded items. Use the main hero for clearing guards, don't waste movement points on picking shit up.

Alright, I gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised with the quality of the game so far. Im not a big fan of the new age art style, but the game is fun. Looking forward to being able to play multiplayer with my brother's.

Favourite faction so far is undead. I always go the skeleton bonus dude, Okonos or something, and upgrade into skeleton archers immediately and roll through the early game with ease. Once I get +2 damage with offence/night magic and +2 hp and +25% atk/def with recruitment the skeletons are unstoppable. I had just under 1000 by the end of week 3 last game.

Yeah Unit Specialization heroes feel the best they ever were. Though IMO the best ones are for slow units to get that + 1 Speed and least good ones are Ranged focus. I also agree the unit specialists feel much stronger too, but especially for the lower tiers. I like to go Johnson with temple and get the tier 1 crusaders on the first turn too. Split a few off into 1 stacks and upgrade them into the tankier version for some diversion and that Ascension buff and you can take great fights early on.

I watched Lexiav play it. It has some really good QoL changes, but for my taste in comparison with vanilla TotE the skill system looks extremely distilled and HotA-fied, even with all the added subclasses. There is a lizardmen town on Jadame in M&M8. In fact you start the game there. So there's already a presence in favor of Fortress-like town, although OE devs don't appear to care that much about making things fit with M&M8's representation of Jadame, so who knows.
I can tell you once, I'm 100% certain we'll get Stronghold-like city in expansion. With the barbarian town appearing in every game of the series, the lack of ogres and trolls among neutral units and the lack of town favoring desert terrain it's obvious.

Yeah, it's pretty useful when they get blocked by melee unit. I think medusas queens are the way to go instead of medusas sculptors. I don't know why I would want to choose the upgrade that mostly makes the ranged unit better at melee, although the constant 18 dmg is nice. Same thing with t3 dancers, why would I pick the upgrade that focused on melee instead of range? Not to mention that Dungeon already have pretty great melee units like minotaurs that counterattack first when attacked or teleporting around assassins that take away counterattack from units they hit. Overall Dungeon is definitely my favorite faction here.

I don't find anything from low tiers useful once you have arbitrators and concubines. Well besides using biggest stack of meat to deal additional damage or tank, communion makes it optimal to use the biggest stack to tank damage with free units, which is usually jellies or cultists who get targeted first. But the real problem is always making the enemy finish your stack instead of leaving few units and then ignoring it.
