Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, and any derivatives in this thread!

The Final Fantasy Tactics remaster is out, as well as the Tactics Ogre remaster. Also shilling the excellent One Vision mod for the PSP version of Tactics Ogre, which rivals and even exceeds the Reborn remaster, depending on taste.

This bastard of a battle that was the first serious challenge Ive faced. Normally assassination battles are super easy, but the choke point on this map combined with the two golems using upgraded rampart aura to keep me from getting by them was brutal. Pulled out all the stops on mobility, equipping water wading and jumping skills, levitation items, and just shoved all my units to one side until the golems finally screwed up their positioning and the target wandered into range of my fighters.

I've also found these necromancers in the woods dungeon that drop special daggers that let you swap bodies with an enemy while keeping your Intelligence and Mind stats. So I spent all of yesterday capturing faeries and ghosts with high base mental stats and bodysnatching enemies with good physical stats to make great hybrid units. Currently training up my newly created warlock, terror knight, and ninja I got this way. You can also steal necromancer class marks from them, but I don't really have the spells to use necromancers effectively. I just had my warlock swap to one to snag the undead recruitment skill before switching back.

I have been playing FFTA2 for the first time.
Is it just me or is a Red Mage with Summoner A abilities and Blood Price support abillity super broken? You can oneshot a group of enemies on turn 1 by double casting Maduin summons.

Yes, double casting summoner abilities is very broken. Classic combo. Good times. I remember I used an assassin/summoner in my first FFTA playthrough. So nostalgic.

I love Tactics Ogre Reborn. I considered getting FFT but one time long ago I tried it on an emulator and it was slow as shit. Is that fixed in the PC remaster or is does it feel like a drag to play the game?

They're really good. This is the female dragoon portrait. She's a dexterity dragoon. With a crossbow and a heavy shield, armor, dex gloves and dex ring. She uses dragoon's innate magic to instill frost into her weapon. MAXIMUM damage. But also decent defense because of Dragoon and stats and their access to all types of armor. This particular variant of heavy shield is also meant for shield bashing, so it gives a bonus to attack as well as defense. Attack also applies to her crossbow because video gaem.

You can't. That's why the battle became a meme.

There's a few ways to make that fight easier. I would suggest putting some accessories on your units that prevent confusion/petrification at the very least. Using skills like auto potion or a combo of mana shield and manafont will save your ass. This next one sounds like bullshit but it works and trivializes the fight equip Ramza with a chamelon robe and Wiegraf won't use his Holy sword skills

I a mistake early on in this battle, deciding to split my forces and sending the majority to the North. Yeah, in One Vision I use a cheat that makes it so enemies that pick up items just give them to be instead. There are some unique drops so I sorta consider it a necessity.

>>2195676
If you mean where classes level up instead of individual units? Yes, the Reborn remake makes it individual units instead of classes that level up. If you're talking about class marks, the items you have to use to change classes, then no. Those are still there. If you play the PSP version or One Vision then you can just use cheats to give yourself infinite amounts of them though. There's actually a cheat that lets any unit become any class too which I intend to try sometime.

It makes perfect sense for code efficiency but I'm laughing that Mirdyn and Guildus are the two genders of their class.

Archers aren't that strong in Reborn. Vartans are pretty much strictly better at bows because bows only damage lightly armored targets and their mobility lets them get to the back line.

It's a complete revamp of everything in the entire game. It does so much it's difficult to describe exactly what it is that the mod does, because literally everything in the game has been changed in some way. Classes, abilities, spells, weapons, armor, buffs and debuffs, formulas, battles. Everything has been autistically adjusted and now there isn't a single option in the entire game that isn't viable. There is no meta because literally everything is good now. And not balanced in the way where everything is viable because everything sucks, everything just feels so good to use. It really feels like the definitive version of the game. It feels like the devs were given an extra decade to tweak things to be just right, because that's basically what the mod is. If I had to describe the mod in one word, it would be "complete".

One of my favorite examples of one of the ways the mod improves things is the weapon variety. In the original, there were unique weapons that would have a neat effect. Like a crossbow that inflicts poison on enemies. But these weapons were unique, so eventually you would outlevel them and be forced to use a different crossbow, even though you really like the poison effect. In One Vision the available weapons are greatly expanded, and if you liked the silence crossbow, there are now other versions of crossbows at higher level that have that same effect. The same goes for basically every sort of unique weapon. Claws that stun or poison, Sidearms that inflict a huge range of debuffs. Huge swords that deal shitloads of damage but are super inaccurate and inflict Slow. Spears with caster stats. Staffs with melee stats. Daggers that charm. There's such a huge variety that you can totally change a way a unit plays just by swapping some equipment around. Your rogue could be a long ranged unit that inflicts poison with crossbows and supports friendlies with thrown items. Or a magekiller backstabbing with silencing daggers.
>>
>>2209449
Would you reccomend for a first playthrough? It sounds different enough from the original where it wouldnt matter if I played either.
>>
>>2209630
I would recommend it for a first playthrough because it is a better version of the original game and I don't see a reason to play the original anymore. Either play One Vision or shell out the $50 for Reborn. Reborn is good too, but it's a completely different type of game with all the changes they made.

Are there any real-time games like these? I like turnbased combat, I'm just curious.
>>
>>2232238
This type of gameplay doesn't lend itself to real-time. I have played some games like Civ 6 that are turn-based but allow for simultaneous turns mode and it sucks.
If you were to design a game with real-time in mind from the start it would of course be better but I still doubt it would work too well.
>>
Anyone played through Fantasy Maiden Wars?
I'm trying to figure out something that the game doesn't seem to specify. I noticed that I could share consumable items if I had them on Nitori. But now that she's out of my party, I stuck some on Dai expecting to also be able to share. But no. Is there a skill that I'm missing that allows sharing consumable items? Is it only certain characters? The game never tells you this.
>>
>>2233172
Only Nitori and Rin can share items to adjacent units. The game doesn't give you a tutorial but Nitori has a skill called extending arm, if you hover over it then you'll see that it mentions using items on teammates. Nitori, Dai and Lily White can heal allies without items as well, and Koakuma, Minoriko and Akyuu can resupply ammo. Eirin can heal and resupply.
>>
>>2232238
Ogre Battle / Unicorn Overlord are the closest I can think of before it turns fully into the RTS genre
>>
So I just started Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and it's mostly going fine but some of my shitters apparently fail their dispatch missions.
It's not really clear from the ingame descriptions that those missions can even be failed. You simply send out a guy and wait for some days or battles for him to come back. The last two missions they've come back saying the mission didn't go well. What's the success criteria?
>>
>>2237678
I think it's based on their level or stats. When you're selecting a party member to dispatch they can either jump, walk, or kneel. If they jump they will always succeed, walking is a chance to fail, and kneeling will always fail.
>>
>>2237713
I was sending my unleveled useless guys but I guess that wont work then.

Does the money glitch break the game (Tactics Ogre Reborn specifically)? As long as it doesn't make battles a breeze I'm tempted to since I don't have time to grind so much. It's one reason I gravitate to TOR over FFT besides the former having actual tactical combat.
>>
>>2175182
yep, it is now
>>
>>2239362
I don't know what glitch you talk about but you don't need to grind for money in Tactics Ogre Reborn. You don't really need to grind for anything unless you want to. I think I did a bit of grinding in the Phorampha Wildwood to kill griffins and dragons to craft some equipment in the last chapter but that's not much and not needed.

Essentially its full turnbased TW Lite. You have global map with cities and then tactical turn based battles. Been playing The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk as my first entry into this genre. The tutorial isn't the best (I had to ask Grok to explain exactly where Opportunity Attacks land because I couldn't find any info in game or online, and it didn't explain that you only get 1 per turn and it only activates when enemies LEAVE the zone, not enter it) but once I got a grasp on it I didn't have too much difficulty. I can't tell if I'm just shit or the game is really frontloaded, but a lot of the early fights felt like I was in fuck-my-ass-raw mode - you don't have enough Agility to accurately hit shit without boosts from teammates, nobody has any substantial abilities yet and you are fighting fuckers that hit 3x as hard as you do. Once I got some stunning abilities, a solid hit chance and decent gear it got a lot easier though, I'm clearing most fights without anyone getting incapacitated at all, the only fight that felt really unfair recently was the Splat Jaypak one which is just fucking ridiculous.
>boss has 90% dodge chance and can hit you behind cover across the map with an aoe attack that applies a random debuff and does around 20 damage when most characters have 60-100 hp
>assistant has 200+ health and charms a random party member each turn
>orc fighter, archer and berserker on the left plus a troll in the middle lane
>on top of all of this you have the roulette wheel either randomly debuffing your entire team or buffing the enemy team every single turn
I ended up winning by having my ranged dudes rush through the weak gobs on the right, keeping the melee units engaged in the center with my main fighters and beating down his assistant asap, only had one incap when the troll tanked 3 opportunity attacks to bumrush my thief.

I don't get the Overwatch mechanic in this game, I get how it functions but even most melee units have bombs they can throw, so they just tank your overwatch attack and chuck shit at your unit to disable it.

The other day I was sifting through lists and store listings and asking people and even ai about successor titles and frankly the selection I looked at was so poor that I'm in the mood for old games winning awards over modern stuff.
Looking at the nominations doesn't change that sentiment. Civ 7 should not have even been nominated... but here I am taking VGA seriously.
>>
>>2294832
it's also barely got strategy or did the remake change that
>>
>>2294866
You're being generous. The only things on that list that aren't utter shit are FFT and The Alters, and the latter isn't a tactics game and probably isn't that great gameplay wise.
Modern devs cry and whine, but like was said if they're not doing on par or better then the old stuff why should they win over it. "It's not fair"? How commie.
>>
>>2294934
It still doesnt. FE Engage is more tactical than FFT, even TO:R and it lost to Pikmin 4 which also barely has strategy.

I gave up on taking VGA's seriously when they awarded Best Fighter to MultiVersus over KOF15.

First time Tactics Ogre player here, taking a break from beating my head against this necromancer guy (see pic) to ask a question: What exactly does it mean to go Law/Neutral/Chaos path, how will I know if I'm doing it right, and without spoilers what's the benefits of each of them?
>>
>>2297047
The difference is the story and what characters are available. Neutral has the fewest unique characters but that's not an issue for a first playthrough.
What it means is at one or two points in the game you make a story choice that sets you off on your chosen path for the next chapter.

If you want to minmax and recruit every character available on your path etc then you look up a guide (it can be done without spoiling the whole story). If you want to go in blind just go with the flow and don't worry about it. You can always replay the game to try all paths or use the time traveling post game feature to collect all characters in the same save file.

Is it? I didn't play it for long because it was so fucking slow. I actually own a physical copy and I hated retrying some battles or even playing them in general. I did hard mode. Every action feels very slow.

I loved FFT, FFTA, but never got more than a few hours into FFTA2. Should I try again? I might just emulate it so I can save state and speed up.

I played the game on PSP first. Hated the way classes/grinding worked but overall loved the game so much.

Tried One Vision and it still felt grindy. I forgot exactly what they fixed and what they didn't, but I still remember certain enemies taking such little damage if you didn't level up against their type or something stupid. Probably dragons. It was a good mod, they definitely fixed a lot of stuff, but it felt imbalanced still.

I played the remake and really liked it, the card system was unexpected but still fun to utilize. I just wish they remade it faithfully, fixed the class/leveling issues, the balance, and maybe made two modes where you could toggle cards on and off from the beginning, and had to play through the game that way, not being able to change it throughout. That would have been fine for me.

I still like the remake more than anything else I played, but I finished it years back now and you're making me consider trying One Vision again.

First, lay off that fight if you're trying it right away. Do some more missions, get some ranged and a hired priest or two with exorcism, then do it before you do stuff in Balmamusa.
In Balmamusa there's a decision, you'll know it when it happens. Agreeing will put you on Law, Opposing will put you on Chaos. Later on in the Chaos run you can choose to make peace with the decision givers, that's the Neutral path which is often recommended for newcomers, but if you think you'll only do the one playthrough and move on consider the other two.
>>
>>2297047
Biggest tip for that fight, besides levelling up a bit on story missions, is to use crossbows. Being able to fire upwards is a blessing.
>>
>>2297212
I'd say give it a go again with an emulator so you can speed it up but if still doesn't click with you then it just might not be your thing. Nothing wrong with that and you'd only be better off playing something you enjoy

Man as someone who is fatigued on anime slop I'm really digging how reserved and dignified the portraits are in Tactics Ogre.
>>
I've been searching all of 4chan for a thread to talk about Tactics Ogre. I only came across it for the first time this year and I have been completely obsessed with it. I love everything about it. The story, the characters, the art, the gameplay. This game is an actual masterpiece and it's a shame how much it's overshadowed by it's watered down sibling FFT. Not to throw too much shade at FFT as the game is still great but I feel like if you have played both games it's really obvious how much FFT is lacking compared to TO.
>>

>Neutral path which is often recommended for newcomers
It is??? I remember some of the hardest fights in the game are in Chapter 3 Neutral. In particular the Cerya rescue mission at Boed Fortress against Oz and the Phaesta, Chamos, Tamuz rescue mission at Quadriga Fortress.
>>
>>2298349
to be fair to FFT it brought more exposure to TO
at least in the west

Is Disgaea basically the same style of game? Been looking for something else to play, went looking for modern successors but none are very impressive.
>>
>>2298545
not really, this style of game is the mechanical basis for disgaea but the further you go along the less it has in common with tactics games, it's more of a stat farming sandbox, you could try one of the two first titles though, with mechanics like throwing and puzzle world color tile effects it's fun enough to dip into

I'm playing One Vision mod and i'm in Chapter 4, just cleared Barnicia castle. If i understood right, now is the proper time to grind and gather equipment.

In what order should i start doing all the sidequests that are available? Are the early battles in PotD too hard?
>>
>>2299268
At that point in the game you can do the temple quest and some of the other smaller quests. If you missed part of Azelstan's quest you won't be able to do it now but you can come back to it after you beat the game. If you want to do the Blackmoore battle in PotD you will want to beat PotD now, as it requires you to do the Nybeth fight on floor 100 in chapter 4 for when you go into PotD in CODA. You'll also need the four wind god weapons as well.

Newbie to Tactics Ogre, is it normal for random battles to absolutely destroy me harder then story ones? Can't tell what I'm doing wrong, if characters are understatted or don't have the right skills or what. The AI is usually 1-1 or has the numbers advantage, it always seems to have the right angles to get to my guys while being just out of reach of my stuff, and they have multiple flying fucks compared to my ONE.
Also I've had Denam using a 2-hander mainly because that's what he uses in the art and does it become more viable later or am I missing some detail?
Haven't quite hit the wall but a bit mired in mud right now. Not really used to this type of game.
>>
>>2299557
maybe random battles scale to your level while you have already overgrown story ones

Dream Tactics was pretty fun tactics game with deckbuilder elements for character's attacks and abilities. It was just rather easy.
>>
Is it worth hitting level cap in chapter 1 of Ogre?
Also snagged myself two gryphon.
>>
>>2300171
As I remember you hit the level cap most of the time just by naturally following the story. If not then it shouldn't take too many extra battles to get to the cap.
If you struggle with some battles the tactic is to rush the win con target. Apply breached to them and focus them down fast. This is why vartans are so good because they can fly over all the fools and smack the priority targets in the face.

Playing psp TO, unmodded, first time for any version.
I hope I’m just retarded and not noticing a feature over the game bugging out or deciding to be super tedious, but I’m in chapter 2 and hit a wall. All the sudden my damage numbers have plummeted across the board. Went from consistent 15-40 damage depending on type and target to 1-15.
At a mission which has two golems which take 1 damage from everything except magic and the main target actually takes 1 damage from everything except finishers.
What am I missing?

How strict is the Deneb recruitment quest in One vision mod?

I've unlocked her shop, but i haven't beaten the vasque random battle.

I auctioned two dragons and bought the orbs. Do those orbs count or do i need to do the battle first?
>>
>>2301051
Damage numbers are pretty fucky in the unmodded PSP version. Some units are very tanky, and units like Valkyries can use magic but they'll only deal 1 damage as you progress through the game. If you're struggling to deal damage at all make sure you have strengthen and anatomy on all of your units.

>>2301133
In OV you still need to sell orbs but auctioning dragons gives you more orbs than in the regular PSP game. You need to beat the necromancer fight at Vasque first. If you want Wicce you'll need to sell glass pumpkins first, but if you don't care about her unique class you can sell the orbs and a cutscene will play.
>>
>>2301160
Then I might have to switch to modded, because this is driving me nuts, I put strengthen and truestrike on a bunch of guys, slap Breach on enemies, and it’s barely improving things. Mission after mission it gets worse, I’m out of options, and spending ages scratching one enemy to death isn’t fun or tactical.
The random battles are bs too, trying to rank up lower levels and it throws ranged winged men and monsters and golems my way. They’re more capable of being damaged but fuck me…
>>
>>2301649
Take the One Vision pill.

Must have been a very old version of One Vision then because none of that is the case anymore. The various anatomy skills are absolutely unnecessary and the only thing that can make you feel like you're not doing enough damage is having crap weapon skills, and even that isn't a huge deal.
>>
>>2301051
Unmodded TO is unfortunately grindy as all fuck. Shoulda gone with One Vision.
>>
>>2302496
>>2303309
Well I switched, old save still works but items equipped are randomized and so different from what they used to be, that and bug worries making me start the game over.
Shame, I'm not that far in the game but I got two griffs somehow in Ch 1 and I'm going to miss them.
>>
>>2303417
It's worth it, trust me. Let us know what you think of the changes once you start to fully grasp how different the game is. They are EXTENSIVE.
>>
>>2303417
You can get unlimited gryphons in chapter 2 so don't worry too much about that.
>>
>>2303419
I mean I'm impressed, and so far largely finding it more tactical compared to the complete dominance one way or the other of vanilla. Really appreciate the weapon effects and more useful status spells.
Enemy knights are already starting to get beefy though two thirds through Ch. 1, so gotta fine tune the band now.

Its best to do what the enemies do to your knights-ignore them. They're tanky bastards and can take a few hits even when breached. Combined with their ability to purge debuffs they're probably the most annoying enemy type in the game for me.

Another new player here. I am super tempted to make a band of nothing but reptiles and winged. Do they actually have any disadvantages besides class limits?
>>2304517
That stuff was why I hated Krile from V. But that's another general's topic.
>>
>>2304523
Depends on what version of the game you're playing. In One Vision, yes thats the only downside besides base stats. Reptiles are beefy as hell in strength stats which makes them great frontliners. Absolutely garbage mental stats though, which is fine since they cant take casting classes anyway, aside from Terror Knight I think. Terror Knight does just fine ignoring magic and just using his skills though. For a long time I was using a Terror Knight with those 2h swords that trade accuracy for more damage, guaranteeing the hit with that 40 TP Fearful Impact. That was a lot of fun. Eventually I decided they were too slow though and swapped to axes. I just like Breach too much.
>>
>>2304523
You are forced to use Denam sometimes so it can't be completely without regular humans.
The version I have played is Reborn and the only issue I can think of is that you wont have a good user for the summon spells which are the best magic you get in the lategame. But that's more a minmax problem than something that will keep you from beating the game.
>>
>>2304775
Lizards/Lamia can use summons as they have access to Patriach/Matriach. If he's using Winged and playing TO Reborn he can actually turn a Winged into a Lich, which can also use summons.

Only 1 real reason to go law route
