I've been wanting to play a turn-based WW2 game, something on a small scale like XCOM, is there a good game like that?

Also, general WW2 strategy game thread I guess.

nucom is not my cup of tea but I'd suggest you give the strategic mind series a go. They got their faults, and more than a bit of lapring going on but the gameplay is quite alright for someone hungry for panzer general content.

HoI IV is the ultimate World War 2 game and probably always will be. It encompasses all dimensions of the war from the politics and intrigue to all branches of war.

That is without even mentioning the multi-faceted additions modding brings to the table.
>>
>>2178570
Hoi4 ain't even the ultimate hoi game.
>>
Your options are the silent storm series, classified 1942, or forgotten but unbroken.

They're all subpar in different way. Silent Storm is probably the most notable for the physics, but it's pretty old now and not as tactical in ways that the other two are. The other two are xcom tactics lite.

Didn't couple of new games come out something like partisans 1942 and that other game by Hatred devs?
>>
>>2178450
Headquarters ww2 is pretty ok.

But you should probably try combat mission first. It's got the Wego system instead of sequential turns.

honestly the ultimate WW2 game would actually start in 1919 (or 1923), last until 1950+, and try to simulate econ, domestic politics, and foreign politics in a historically plausible fashion. No focus tree bullshit. You wouldn't get the same WW2 every time but hopefully something that is plausible enough. The alt history would emerge in a plausible way. Probably best to use Vic2 as a starting point for developing a game like that
>>
>>2179692
yeah dude the ultimate ww2 game would have 30 years of not-ww2
>>

Will we ever get a good coh game again?

OR and hear me out, new blitzkrieg but actually good and you can shove all that tacked on civilian crap up your ass.

you have two pills, first pill is you get what anon suggested, and play it. second pill is you don't. which do you choose?
>>
>>2178570
also my man here is asking for a squad based tactics game, and you bring up HOI. holy shit. There's a bunch, depending on scale I'd include steel panthers, WinSteelPanthersWW2 is free now, I think. Never got into it, but it's decent. For a more xcom-like experience, I gotta do some digging, but there's a few of those with a narrative style experience.
>>
>>2187154
Let me guess, one's brown and the other black?
>>
>>2186509
It's insanely bad and builds random shit, it wins only when it cheats with resources.
>>
>>2186509
Like anon above said, it's not smart at all, but at higher difficulties it gets so many resources that it can build tanks extremely early and spam grenades and shit, but it's easy to understand how it works and punish it every time

I actually enjoyed the asskicking. Too many RTS just coddle the player.
>>
>>2179692
>zoomed who's never played Darkest Hour or HoI3 describes them both
>>
>>2186509
Its terrible at making decisions, so it seems to the player like it is trying to flank. Once you realize that it never uses abilities, it's pretty easy to fight. Just get some team weapons pointed at general areas to protect. Don't try anything fancy.

Look up The Troop on Steam. Hex based ww2 game where you play as British or German. Has a campaign mode where units persist between battles.
I bought the game ages ago so I can't speak for any of the DLC shit they've put out but I have at least a hundred hours in it.

Literally all they had to do for hoi4 was combine darkest hour, hoi3 and east vs west. They finally got around to adding faction interaction from E vs W with the newest DLC but the game is so bloated now its basically pointless unless modders do something with it.

Close Combat. Also try tactical 3D games like like Combat Mission and Gary Grigsby’s war in the West. If you like more turn based stuff check out TalonSoft’s Campaign Series. I really only played its Arab Israeli Wars era offshoot - Divided Ground - but the gameplay was the same.

wan't have ww1 without the franco-prussian war, can't have that without napoleon, can't have napoleon without the french revolution, etc

ideally every ww2 game should start in the bronze age

I dream of a X-COM [1994] ww2 mod where you play as the germans.
