I started Jagged Alliance 2 at least 12 to 20 times at various points in my lifetime.

I never got past the first four towns or so. I only finished the game once when I snuck into the final time and solo killed Deidranna. Are there any good tips & tricks to keep in mind for tactically challenged players? Is it possible to finish the game while letting the auto-battle resolve all the militia fights? I hated the militia fights.

Yeah, same. It just gets dull after a while (enemies take so long with their turns, and there are many chores to put up with), and if I stop playing for a while, I have no idea what I was doing and no motivation to continue. Also, I got burned trying that unofficial patch. The only JA I finished is. ironically. the Unfinished Business expansion. My favorite was JA1, tho.

JA2 is the quintessential strategy game with RPG elements. Your *player skill* as a strategist is way more important to your success than your individual characters' skills.

Yeah I never bother with Militia fights, just train up your guys past green level and let them auto resolve while retreating your squads. Also bring lots of mortars and LAWs for Meduna and try and get as many attachments as you can because a CAWS with a gun barrel extender, rod and spring, laser scope, and scope is a monster. I'd also recommend periodically checking Tony's gun shop for attachments and rare items, checking Balime for ceramic plates and regen boosters to keep your men alive and have less downtime healing between battles, and trying to get Skyrider ASAP for the quick movement when the ground vehicles don't cut it.

Same I always die before I get an assault rife because all my dudes miss their shots. I shoot out of effective range because the enemies would just Merc me close range. I go behind rocks and trees and still doesn't work out. Idk how people say this game is easy. Definately not going to try 1.13 until I can get this right.

be very descriptive in your save file names. you're more likely to abandon a game if you forget what you were planning to do

as long as you train them to regular militia level
if you don't have enough militia trained to cover the whole town and you see an enemy patrol is about to assault a sector, you can shuffle them and move your best militia to the sector in jeopardy

to this point: try to get both the ice cream truck and the hummer as early as possible, they're an insane mobility improvement, especially if you operate multiple squads at different locations

make sure your mercs are actually healed and not just bandaged (health bar red and not split between pink and red). injured mercs get a lot of penalties to everything, on top of just being closer to dying

you really should shorten the distance to be in range of your weapons
consider flanking or baiting enemies around corners of buildings

also if you're low on weapons, you can try hand-to-hand combat - it's very easy to just steal weapons off knocked out enemies
just remember to press R to run instead of just walking

The accuracy penalty is exponential past the effective range. Are you using the LOS and cover display buttons when playing? Delete and End will display the cover and LOS for your currently selected merc in their current stance based on the enemies you can currently see and when holding those buttons you can press + and - on your keyboard to increase the display radius so I would recommend maxing out the display of it. There's generally (but not always) an MP5 in the factory in Drassen, or you can recruit someone like Lynx or Gus for one day when starting the game just to have a starting long arm to help deal with the early game. And once you get scopes your accuracy will improve massively with every aim level used.

Get any costly merc with rifle for 24 hours
You can use them to take first town and then take both their decentish armor and rifles for avatar/other mercs
Shooting with pistols is waste of time
Make your avatar have night vision+ and do attacks at night

v1.13 is the only way you can play in windowed mode, and playing in the original size on non-CRT monitors is unbearable

Ok, here's my first try of the 1.13 mod, are the settings good? I disabled the inventory system because you guys say it's bad.

Half of my squad got killed as they got unloaded from the helicopter. Literally before I got my first turn. Igor got burst to death the moment he dropped on the ground. Epic.

And the game keeps lagging for no reason and when the mercs move in crouched mode they always go into the danger with their butt first.

I know the mechanics from playing unmodded JA2 long ago, and I don't remember getting killed as I dropped off the helicopter before I had a chance to move.

The highest settings on the ice cream mod were a nothingburger compared to the 1.13 easiest, you even get to move before you get shot at. But there's an ultra annoying bug.

It happens "randomly" but 90% of the time. The only way to fix it is either restart the game or play with an invisible cursor (if you alt tab and move your cursor, it moves to the same position in the game) and hope it gets fixed on its own (happened once so far).

Tried both windowed mode and full screen. Windows 11 btw.

Yeah I know that it happens after alt tab normally but in 1.13 JA2 (latest version from ModDB) it happens automatically and me pressing alt again with the game window active doesn't stop it. Maybe because I had to run it in 16b color for windowed mode. Anyway, the other mod is much better all I need to fix is the mouse not being visible.

You probably alt tabbed and the game still thinks you're holding alt, press it again.

It passes the "this is dogshit" bar that games past 2 set as the standard and actually came out, but it has some of nucom's problem that it went too far with video-gamey power progression, and the writing doesn't fucking work.
Sometimes the game comes together in well thought-out encounters, sometimes it's just bad.
