MoO1 vs 2 vs apparently we don't talk about 3 vs Conquer the Stars where apparently mods make it OK. Which Master of Orion do you prefer? I've only ever played 2 but love it dearly, minus some of the micromanagement with planets that tends to happen

RoTP, which is just a better MoO1. MoO2 has too many nested screens.

good game and very distilled 4x but god damn I do not like how it looks

As a child and teenager I thought MOO2 was the apex
As I got older I realised how much god-damn clicking is required. The dread of seeing a list of 100 buildings appear when a new planet is colonized.

MOO1 is much more elegant with its sliders and achieves much the same outcome.

I pretty grew up on 2 so that's a personal preference. Never really liked how you could stack a gorillion+1 small shitty boats and end realities in 1 either.
>>
>>2200496
Honestly I don't even remember MOO1 anymore,
MOO2 was my goto for ever and I always stalled out from the micromanaging.

The best tribute I found to date is this little indie game
>Interstellar Space: Genesis

questionable plus its damn ugly

Played both MOO1 and 2 for the first time as an adult so no rose-tinted glasses for me. 1 is better than 2. More polished, more elegant. 2 becomes micromanagement hell

Master of Magic is better than both
And Age of Wonders 1 is better than Master of Magic
>>
>>2200496
I only played 2 and I loved it, I really liked the tech research system and how creativity affects it, and also miniaturisation is amazing and I’m surprised Stellaris doesn’t have something similar, I liked to just focus on phasors and jam them in ships and blast my way
>>
>>2200496
im quite tired of playing MOO2 since i realised the easiest way to win on impossible was population growth + charisma and then wait for the interspace council to vote, and then i just win because i have the most votes with the highest population!

i didn't even have to beat orion or the demonic antarians. i hardly even have any spaceships when i win thru this method.
>>
>>2201819
>Never really liked how you could stack a gorillion+1 small shitty boats and end realities in 1 either.

that is the more elegant solution compared to herding 10 + battleships to take down the orion guardian.
>>
>>2209325
ok so just...don't use that method

Try domination victory. But then all you have to do is rush every player and use mind control to quickly take over planets

I was amazed with SE4. Except the AI can't play for shit. Game feels more like a sandbox because they're not a challenge at all to you.

A reminder that someone got commissioned to draw that smallpox survivor troon, the client okay'd it and paid for it.

take the master of magic pill?

i highly recommend not trying the recent remake. wouldnt mind if they put some of the new races in a version of the old game tho
>>
>>2217200
Never played MoM either way but I've read ridiculous things about the remake devs' incompetence. See pic related.
>>
>>2217200
there that dunno how to name it? paid mod? rebalance? fan expansion?
Caster of magic and its pretty good

yeah, its awful

there is MoM lite, Master of Luna, it had demo but it disappeared on me
>>
>>2217222

AFAIK the remake was basically another AOW clone. devs totally missed the point.
>>
>>2209787
>then all you have to do is rush every player and use mind control to quickly take over planets

i did that in my first game. omniscient plus the psychic picks are OP for early game and undefended planets in lategame. but depends on randomish tech trees and whether the computers bothers to trade for missile bases and such. that however still takes a lot more effort growing your population.
>>
>>2220518
>Caster of magic and its pretty good
you can literally download it for free unless you really wanna give GOG and modder some coffee money. i don't like mods that mess with he basic mechanics though.
>>
>>2225503
> a lot more effort THAN growing your population.
>>
>>2225503
I usually metagame with a pre-warp start, creative, telepathic, repulsive, and some other picks to balance out the racial points.
>>
What was so bad about MOO3? It came out when I was a junior in high school and I hadn't played the earlier ones. I can't say I put hundreds of hours into it (saved that for Hearts of Iron), but at this point it was like 20 years ago and I remember it getting panned.
>>
>>2200496
>apparently we don't talk about 3

It was actually the first MoO i played because i somehow missed the oldschool ones.
>pretty cool ship design system
>massive space battles. A bit ugly but still cool in their own way
>cool animated characters in the diplomacy menu

However
>The economy is overly complicated to the point of being completely nonsensical and not mattering to the game anyway
>The AI is completely braindead
>>
>>2225813
I liked the silicon-based faction that dropped crystals to communicate
>>
>>2225779
its ugly imo. and they automated the fug out of the game while making the computer player dumb , so it's too easy to "click end turn to win".
>>
>>2201893
>The best tribute I found to date is this little indie game

Not gonna pay $30 but I'll keep an eye on it, thanks.

This. I got into MoO1 around my highschool/uni years in 2010s having Civilization as a background, and liked it very much. MOO2 filters me hard with all the build queues tedium. And I strongly disliked the leaders, they ruin the game for me. It just ruins the feel of ruling an interstellar empire when a random schmuck appears and provides you with half of your total income.
>>

>strongly disliked the leaders, they ruin the game for me. It just ruins the feel of ruling an interstellar empire when a random schmuck appears and provides you with half of your total income.

i like having "heroes" in strat games, but SOME colony leaders are just overpowered compared to the ship leaders . ship leaders are mid at best and easily killed in massive battles. too unbalanced.

it's not like in MOM, where the battles are limited to 9 units per side, and magic mechanics and RNG make it so that the heroes can be both OP/awesome AND still be easily killed given the right conditions.
>>
>>2225490
never actually got around to MoM, how does it deviate? Besides you know, not structurally being a literal 1:1 aow clone
>>
>>2220518
>Caster of magic and its pretty good
Awful mod
>>
>>2258103
Focus more on heroes/leaders. Units and spells became more generic. Nothing really OP or stands out.
Overall feels more like a numbers game than anything magical or magic countering magic.
>>

>>2288430
I can only guess but I think they were named after 轩辕国 'land of Xuanyuan' - a mythical country of half-men half-snakes living to the west of China. Due to their association with Nüwa, goddess of fecundity and marriage, their pop bonus may reflect that.
