yea you can set them to patrol but it's kinda buggy
you can just leave them in a sea zone (sea zones have multiple sea locations, it will raise presence in all of them even if you just leave it in 1 location)
I just have 3 fleets for each of the sea zones in the adriatic sea
>>
>>2212780
Just take a ton of their land and make them small.
>>
>>2212780
also im fairly certain that score check was added in today's 1.0.2 patch because few redditors cried that their personal union was taken over by france
>>
>>2212783
I looked at it, admittedly I figured there'd be some sort of direct correlation but there isn't. Regardless crown power is basically another control multiplier. The inverse is also true, if you have high control but very low crown power it also doesn't help you much.
>>
>>2212789
no cant do, if you take 130 provinces in france, either directly or through vassal, you win the situation and cant claim the throne anymore. i mean, you could carve few vassals out of them, but still you lose out on 2+ million pops
>>
>>2212720
Are you joking? GROB Poland took out the teutons. France is raping everyone, the fucking Netherlands formed. The only thing I want fixed now ai-wise is timur ans the ottomans going hard as they did irl. The ottomans are so disappointing in this game.

>>
>>2212792
You can’t fully take advantage of those pops or lands anyways because control would abysmal. You could also release a couple vassals and give them a bunch of land so it’s not just a billion small vassals, if that’s easier to manage.
>>
>renaissance almost over
>barely ever unlocked 1/10 of the techs
great,,,
>>
>>2212798
claiming the throne would not annex france, it places them in personal union so control is still in Paris.
>>
>>2212770
Disease was spreading in the new world well before anyone landed and set up a colony. There was early trade between European fishermen off the coast and the natives when it was first discovered.
>>
>>2212799
you're not supposed to unlock them all i think, theres a strategy, you pick and choose what you think is best and you gotta stick with that.

>>2212797
1.45 million
>>
>>2212792
>i mean, you could carve few vassals out of them, but still you lose out on 2+ million pops
So you can do it but just don’t feel like it? No point in directly annexing the land anyway you won’t have much control.
>>
>>2212720
Nothineverhappenssissies… our response?…
>>
Why does the emperor allow princes to consolidate and blob in the HRE? Is he retarded?
>>
>>2212800
He’s talking about you complaining on missing out on annexing the land to make France smaller and weaker. You don’t want to directly annex it anyway. Conquer provinces from them, release as vassals, once they are sufficiently weak, claim throne.
>>
>>2212809
I was playing as emperor but gave up because after a hundred years I’m at -2 imperial authority per month because they all consolidated and I have no way to stop them. It’s not like in eu4 where the emperor gets called into the war. All I can do it’s demand unlawful territory and take like 1 location and it costs 50-100 gold, so it’s not even worth it.
>>
Apart from the reduction in food profuction is there any reason not to turn a town into a city?

yeah great idea when releasing just flanders costs 170 war score, which ai will never agree to. OPMs cost around 20, rest 50. its pointless + great score does not count from subjects (a bit) but mostly from fixed kingdom rank (+100), institutions (+50), pops (+60) prestige (+20 which they keep fucking gaining while losing fights against me?) and tradition (+6 and +6 respectively and keeps rising because they keep getting fucked)
maths is just fucked, its impossible to claim the throne given how many pops and control are around paris. if anyone succeded please post screenshot, so far I have seen only frenchies winning HYW
also forgot to mention there is a limit how much you can weaken them, after that you instantly win with no benefit

>>
>>2212832
Don’t you want the PU doe? Im not sure what you’re talking about or what your issue is. I thought your point was that France is too strong to make ur PU and it’s impossible to weaken them without taking the 130 locations and winning the situation, thus not getting the PU.

So take the lands, release them as vassals. You won’t win the situation and you will weaken France sufficiently enough to PU them.

another fucking retard. you need to have more great power score than france, AND have more military power than them. military is non issue, score is the problem and you cant lower it because there is nothing to release near paris where majority of their pops score comes from. toulouse could be released but will lower the score by maximally 10 points which does not help at all.
>>
>>2212838
>You won’t win the situation and you will weaken France sufficiently enough to PU them

you dont have PU CB after winning the situation, thats the problem
>>
>>2212839

Are you trolling or are you retarded. TAKE THE LAND IN A PEACE DEAL DIRECTLY, THEN RELEASE AS CUSTOM VASSAL ONE SECOND LATER. Nigga you can take paris then make it a CUSTOM vassal. You don’t have to release anything from France.

It’s great if you like a slow burn and a lot of mechanics that seem hard to learn but are really common sense when they all fit together right. You just have to learn that it’s there. I’ve played paradox games for years (Vic2 was probably my favorite but I played plenty of the other ones and EU4). I like it a lot, but there are clear flaws and bugs that need to be worked out.

Build roads, pay attention to proximity cost, get shit cored, accept cultures so you can get full cores(+20% control)
>>
>>2212931
It depends, rivers are better carriers of proximity than roads, so keep in mind that it's better to build off a river. Roads are also pretty expensive, so generally, the marginal control gain you'd get from a separate road to the capital isn't worth it over connecting to an existing network.

Struggled to keep my economy afloat since the unpause, took me all this time to save 50 ducats for my first bulding. Actually, I spent most of my time with below 0.4 of income and then I passed a trade expedition trough parliament and it SAVED my one province ass with extra 7 trade capacity, now I finally have some reliable (albeit still a small amount of) money to build up. When I was over 25% national crown power I didn't see any scaling modifiers up for local control, though maybe I just missed them. Because right now the only thing I can think these buildings will do is increase the national power of the crown, which is good but I don't see how it translates to me being able to tax that specific town/city more, unless I were under 25 crown power and suffering penalties, which I'm not.

Stop seething and lower your goddamn taxes, if you want your buildings to be profitable.
>>
>>2213220
The funnier part there is those Iberian provinces are mostly Castillan. You'd think that'd be enough.
>>
So with the control stuff it's pretty much impossible to have a gigantic empire like rome or a wc? Or no? Would that just mean most provinces would have very low taxes and/or keep frequently revolting and be impossible to assimilate/convert?

>>
>>2213238
Dont worry they give a little something to everyone, thats how you end up with horrible border gore
>>
>>2213234
you are meant to control land through vassals i think
historically, large empires would give distant provinces a lot of autonomy, especially if they were culturally or religiously distinct
>>
>>2213240
but the control would be pretty much the same in a distant land after annexing them so whats the point?
>>
>>2213234
having low taxes isn't a big deal. they still produce goods for your markets.
>>
>>2213234
It improves with tech. Pragmatically speaking there's just about no reason to have land where you wouldn't have a decent amount of control, if that is the case then you should have a vassal use it instead since they'll get much more from it and also invest into it.

It’s got a lot going on, but it all makes sense put together. Literally just think of it like it’s a real country and consider what needs to go into a real country to be successful. It’s kinda common sense:
centralization and infrastructure good
Produce the rgos you have that others don’t
Professional armies good
Estates are jealous fags
People gotta eat and want shit
If you’ve studied or read history, it makes a lot of sense. History chads are eating good.

Flooding every market is just gonna lower prices across the board, yeah. You'll be able to build anything easily but it'll be difficult to profit. >>
>>2213599

>>
>>2213596
Yeah 100%. I would even say that's the right way to play for several countries. I chose to win the HYW as England because that's just always my starting move in an EU game, but I think it would actually be way more optimal to just abandon France aside from some coastline to force market access into the interior and then just flood the world with cheap goods.

I'm having a fuckload of fun no lie, this is easily my favorite Paradox game at least since Vicky 2, and it might truly be better than it already. A lot of release bugs still need to get fixed, but even factoring those in it's remarkably better than I thought it'd be. >>
>>2213610
you literally have to hover over each and every single one in each location and do calculations, it's so fucking annoying
and don't even get me started about upgrading existing buildings to higher tiers, you just have to manually build the exact amount regularly, there is an upgrade button hidden in the tooltip in each location (right side of the building list) but it's meaningless because you can also spam it and it builds more

Settings - Map - Flat map - Always on

>>
>>2213731
>Didn't this happen historically with a few nations?
I only remember the case of Novgorod. Andorra was never a republic, it just happened that the princes there became kings of France after a while.
>>
>>2213728
Being in a PU is like having a defensive alliance.
The thing to watch out for is that after 10 years, the strongest member of the union can try to assert their seniority over the rest of the union, and if you aren't the strongest you may start losing your autonomy and eventually get annexed.
>>
>>2213732
I want flat map mode on ideally but I also want that slight tilt you get in the other paradox games when you actually zoom in really close so I can see the units and tell easier if they’re professionals or levies. If I don’t have flat map on, it tilts way too much zoomed out. It feels wrong.

Andorra has two princes. One is a Spanish bishop and the other is king of France. France hasn't had a king for over a century so they decided it would just be whoever the head of state of France is.
A while ago a Russian guy tried to declare himself king of Andorra and actually had a lot of local support, but the Spanish bishop refused to renounce his princedom. Eventually he declared war on the bishop and was promptly arrested and deported by Spanish authorities.

Maya gaming update post apocalypse:
It's now the 1600s and I still have no fucking clue what feudalism is because there's no reform mechanic I can see to jump start your tech. Fortunately the colonial AI is so unambitious that I've been able to just chill and grab a lot of the imperial mexican territories. I would have done it a lot sooner, but I had a major tool shortage which totally crippled my colonial game.

Turns out iron tools are a lot better than stone tools btw - who knew? Colonzing the 3 iron regions in the north massively jumpstarted my tool/weapon economy and let me blob. I can't tell if that's unintended behaviour or not because it doesn't let you expand the RGO without an advancement but it's absolutely amazing for the north american economies.
For anyone else playing a shithole rushing down iron as early as possible is absolutely the way to go.
Small vassals are incredibly OP for culture/religion assimilation, btw. I've practically doubled my core population by releasing custom subjects->enforce culture/religion->annex. I have my council full time on assimilation and they're still only like 10% as fast. I wish I had any idea at all what they're doing
I actually quite like the southern border so I might stay passive with new spain. I guess it depends on where the AI actually starts to push back against me when I move north.

Oh also some funny population quirks:
Somehow a random province was totally spared from the great pestilence, and it's now by far my most populated province - literally twice my capital.
There's a single rural province which has been the source of basically all of my colony population and it's now totally depopulated. For a while it could barely maintain its own population but for a couple of years now it's gradually been going down.

I think I should probably be expanding all of the food RGOs in the north to just grow the population explosively, but it's already painful enough embracing estates as it is. I don't want to imagine how much worse it will be when the north actually has enough people to represent a substantial fraction of the country

Everywhere that's cored ends up okay
The bottom stuff is integrated but not cored because I'm self restricting below my diplomatic capacity in terms of how much I'm going to abuse vassal culture conversion. If I didn't care that would have all been cored like 150 years ago.

If you went absolutely crazy I think it might genuinely be possible to reach empire rank before the europeans arrive. You'd have to absue vassal conversions like hell to get there before the institutions make it too hard though or get incredibly lucky with a european decline

don’t think UI is just about the more superficial aspects; it’s very much about showing what needs to be shown in the place it needs to be shown, and that’s much more complex than it seems

Given the complexity of EU5, the fact that the UI WORKS is already a big deal, even if its aesthetics aren’t the best. Now, whether it actually works or not, I’m not sure—it seems like it does, but I’ll have to play to confirm. I completely understand not liking the aesthetics, but we should give the devs credit for the work on the more complex parts of the interface

you should be good to go from the get go, but unless you have trade advantage, someone may race you for the same goods. trade capacity has nothing to do with that like other anons said, its so that you can move goods between different markets (e.g. you are anglo but want to sell swedish wood to prague or whatever, you build trade offices in sweden then create trades there). if you want to import something to your market, all you need is capacity and advantage in foreign market.

Two years in - 18 hours in game but most of that was my trial run, probably 3 or 4 hours into this game.
No idea really what I'm doing. Automating trade was a good idea because that was what was really overwhelming me. Everything else feels similar enough to EU4 or Imperator for me to feel semi-confident I know what I'm doing.
I'd really like to defend the Roman Empire in the East and focus on the western Mediterranean but of course they rivaled me. I'll still try to change their mind but I'm worried it'll be too late by then.
Entered a personal union with Hungary, Croatia and Poland(technically not yet but on succession) Not really sure that was a good idea but sounded cool at the time.
Spent most of this game so far just building Tailor's Guilds, expanding wheat RGO a bit, and putting a road up to Aquila.
I've got my counselors Increasing control, assimilating pops, and converting the orthodox ones down in Calabria.
I've got a CB on Provence I might use, might try to take Sicily, might do nothing idk but I'm done for tonight.
This game is interesting in that I don't understand really what I'm doing, not really strongly compelled to blob, pretty sure I couldn't do it even if I tried, and I spend most of the time just kinda staring at it and clicking thru menus but it's been the only thing I can really think about since it released.
Hopefully I can actually learn how to play, or maybe it's not even playable in it's current state. I don't really know. Either way I'll be back tomorrow

just automate it, i think trading manually is either for someone who needs to min max hard and is a masochist or a merchant republic type of run. anyways, auto -> improve RGOs -> manufacture cheap goods into manufactured goods e.g. lumber + dye + tools (if you dont have any, thats where automated trade comes into play) into furniture through Carpenters. furniture will be then sold automatically if it is a good enough export good. but yeah, furniture is just an example, look what RGOs you have where you play, expand them, manufacture them, sell em

In another few decades I'll probably end up quitting and doing my fifth run, in Europe for a change. For some reason the pestilence still hasn't hit and I would think that it probably never will, which means I'll stay with my current population + get more from colonization + get 7m or so from the remaining Mexican states and up becoming an utter behemoth. Just need to be willing to continue and manage the economy properly.

Not only did I have to fight a succession war because it gave Hungary to Poland despite the previous king having a valid male heir, but now that I've gotten Hungary in my union they're STILL going to go to Poland when my current king dies, even though he has a male heir.

Unironically, the Aztec were not colonialist.

They were militaristic conquerors, but it and most other big Mesoamerican powers didn't usually directly govern the places they conquered (likely due to the difficult terrain and lack of draft animals): In fact they are were arguably more hands off then bigger Classic Maya kingdoms, Monte Alban, certainly the Purepecha Empire, etc.

The Mexica of the Aztec capital demanded taxes of economic goods, labor or military service (not of sacrifices: captives for sacrifices were mostly taken during wars or via slave trade, not annually from existing subjects, plus EVERYBODY did sacrifices), and obligations like to not block roads, providing military aid on request, to put up a shrine to the Mexica patron god Huitzilopochtli etc, but that was usually it, with existing kings, laws, and customs kept in place, though there were exceptions were they meddled further then that

This meant that subject and vassal states were effectively to even formally still independent states that retained their own political identity, agency, and interests: The "Empire" was more a network of states then it was a singular polity, like the Athenian/Delian League or to a lesser extent the Holy Roman Empire (by extension this is also why the idea Cortes got allies from the Mexica being hated from sacrifices or oppression is a misconception: It's that their loose rule enabled opportunistic side switching)

By extension, they didn't really displace and found cities and immigrant into the places they conquered much either. It's not unheard of, in some cases when they really wanted to make an example of a place, they'd sack the city, enslave/massacre everybody there and then repopulate it with nobles from Tenochtitlan or other core cities, but that was rare. Sometimes they did replace local kings and then turned royal land into estates for Mexica/other core nobles and royalty, but that was pretty uncommon too.

think we're gonna have to move capital to Den Bosch some time after integrating Holland
stole a market from Cologne by mistake and it ended up there, Brussel and Antwerpen are huge cities though so not sure if better proximity overall is worth it
>>
>>2214061
Okay check what do they spend their shekels on and try to produce or import them cheaply
>>
Is it just me or does proximity not seem to work like it really should? I have coastal provinces which have almost 100 control, but they aren't treated as a nearer source of control than the capital. Control literally propagates to them from the capital and they have like 5 control, when the province directly adjacent to them has 100.
>>
EU5's control mechanics actually make sense of the EU4 Timmy starting situation - having his capital in Herat meant that Samarkand, Kabul and Qom/Isfahan were too far away to administrate properly, so Shah Rukh released vassals and let his sons rule in Transoxiana, Fars, and so on. Ajam in this case is just a nobles rebellion lead by a Timurid prince, and if EU5 started in 1444 - would start at (civil) war with the Timurids day 1.
Actually thinking about it, EU5 mechanics would make it interesting to play the EU4 Timurid start situation. You could have an event to designate a successor amongst Shah Rukh's sons, and when he dies, you integrate one of the vassals and get to play as that character, for example picking Ulugh Beg for his superior stats and also instantly integrating Transoxiana/Samarkand.
Alternatively there could be a worse/rebellion outcome, where you still get to play as the "Timurids" tag, but with a twist - Transoxiana becomes the Timurids, you get to play as them, and the regular Timurid heartland gets split up amongst Khorasan, Sistan, Fars and Afghanistan based on core provinces. Or it could work similarly to the Shogunate - Timurid princes can fight eachother, and whoever occupies Herat gets to be the Sultan. THere could also be some shenanigans with Personal Union mechanics, like in EU4 if you skip further along in the timeline, at one point Khorasan and the Timurids are in a personal union instead of a vassalage contract.

Yeah, I do have peasant surpluses everywhere so maybe it doesn't matter but I'm not sure exactly what the penalties or modifiers are so it's hard to say. It might matter more later when you have a ton of buildings but by then the levy is probably a panic button so it still wouldn't matter.

It scales with control, and subjects have 100% control in their capital, so the crusader states instantly convert all of Greece to random European cultures.

Don't bother. Max out hospitals in you and any vassals, then: Do the isolate cities, hide court, and the quarantine(?) sick option that gives 15% base disease resistance. Note: (!) Not the one that requires you to build a building, sick house, which while it would give 30% resistance resulting in 45% base resistance, there's literally only one place near Europe makes the RGO for it. So it will be capped at 15% anyways due to not having incense from yemen, so the base 15% option is superior and doesn't require building a building. Also blame the Jews

This resulted in only 700k deaths for me as bohemia instead of 900k+, which in hindsight isn't too bad. I'm sure there's a better way such as if you have more cities for the isolate cities 80% resist buff to affect, but I don't know how to influence town or cities to get built. Also prague was barely affected and only lost like 10% of its pop, but now I get like 1k migrants there a month post plague. Lots of serbs and bosnians for some reason..

Dynamic historical events are just missions but worse. Instead of giving you a task with a reward instead you get the same thing without the initial task given to you.

Instead of do x to get reward you instead you have you did a random thing here's a reward. Very strange change. Maybe this game needs like a journal system like Victoria 3 has where your countries unique stuff is presented to you

It really is a disaster. Missions are lot better than the event based content that EU5 leaned into. With missions you can see what you need to do the get the rewards, you can mostly see what you get as a reward and you can progress mostly at your own pace no time gates or waiting. With events it's a total black box. Is it worth picking luneburg and waiting till 1600 to get an event that gives +5% modifier, maybe maybe not, the system is time gated and to even peruse it you basically need to go to wiki and read the events before hand.

>>2214150
That's cause they are, they are there to create an illusion of control (which isn't a bad thing btw) that way the whole thing feels like you are doing things even if really you just aren't.
>>

>Missions are lot better than the event based content that EU5 leaned into
dogshit take
mission trees are the single worst part of EU4 and I'm so glad they're gone, you either do a railroaded playthrough ticking off boxes for overpowered bonuses or force nonsensical outcomes just to clear them (i.e all the mission trees that tell you to colonize X or conquer Y even if in your current playthrough it makes zero sense to do so, just because IRL that happened, encouraging your empire to make retarded and counterproductive choices just to claim the rewards)

Seriously, anyone who actually likes EU4 mission trees is a fucking moron whose opinion you can immediately discard. The way to make different countries and regions play and feel different is not by giving them a bunch of fucking MMORPG fetch quests with proscribed results that just hand you claims or resources for finishing, it's by actually making their gameplay different at the core level so they play out differently in a naturalistic way. The fact all it took for retards to start saying vicky3 was """""fixed""""" was for that dog shit game to start adding in journal entries and mission trees instead of making every single country not play exactly the same as you speedrun an atheist gay commie fanfic shows how awful the taste of people who like this shit is.

>>
>>2214173
My issue with them is that they exist to begin with, every single game with mission trees is literally the worst of its kind paradox has ever made. HOI4 sucks ass. EU4 sucks ass. Victoria 3 sucks ass. The fact that EU5 has actual pops and no mission trees is a breath of fresh air, I almost can't believe that Johan went with such a hard line stance since so many retards think """"flavor""""" is "when you pick a country and it has a mission tree vomiting free shit at you and warping your entire playthrough around it"

Then there's the knock on effects of mission trees existing, where they warp the game around them as slop-eating pigs demand them as the laziest low effort content instead of actually working on the game's simulationist elements to naturally result in different gameplay for different nations/cultures/government types, no instead it's just "okay if you pick X nation and clear your quest log you get Y reward hard coded to trigger!"
>>
>>2214164
I wish they removed random events where its just picking between 5 prestige or 5 ducats
>>
>>2214185
I'm the opposite of seething, I nearly orgasmed on the spot when I saw that all the EU4 fags lost and Johan personally made this game to cater to (Me) by cutting that shit out of the game.

Why is Norway a recommended start if they're the Junior Partner in a union and can't do jack shit on their own because of Sweden? JUST because they're in a position to colonize NA really early into the game?

You wouldn't be doing much more if you were Sweden. The point is that it's a safe start where you can just click buttons, it's fine if it's a junior partner for that purpose, if anything it's preferential because being a junior partner is worthless in this game vs 4 so you can just sit there forever with no downsides and then fight your way out if you want.

Is the difference betweehn a lot of troops just more effecient use of combat width?
Early Acquiebusiers are identical to archers but are 400 men taking up 1 space instead of 100 men taking up 1 space, so I presume they're better and despite having the same attack do more due to being more men.

But levy units, such as matchlock levy, have the same stats as regular units generally as well but they get 1000 troops in a single regiment.
And the reformed longbowman has a higher logistics cost than the longbowman, but the unit size stays the same, and all the stats stay the same.

Is there a hidden bonus based on the age a unit is from to it's effectiveness?

If playing with historical setting on, I'd really perter it if historical nations were very likely to emerge with some degree of variation tolerated.
A mess like this would be acceptable if historical nations setting were off, but then with the complete opposite result, and instead of making the sameish map every damn time like we see in these timelapses. There's just way too many unconsolidated regions by this date.

To me, this is the biggest issue with the game currently, everything else seems like it will be ironed out in a few more months of patches.

Feed it to vassals which integrate and convert it for free and then annex. If you take it directly to make your name on the map bigger then you just ignore it, it doesn't contribute but it's away from the AI and makes your name on the map bigger which was your goal so it doesn't matter.

Honestly, I'm pretty impressed with the amount of flavor so far for a base Day 1 release. I'm barely a decade in as Florence, not even a Tier 1 country, but I've already had a bunch of country specific historical events (banking crisis, sale of Prato, guy getting installed as head of government). Then there's a bunch of government specific, Italy specific AND country specific events, reforms, policies and advances. A disaster threat popped up for a while about the Ciompi Revolt. And the whole Guelphs and Ghibellines split that comes with a Casus Belli and some mechanics. It's been genuinely nice so far. I just hope it's not all frontloaded.

Anybody else noticed how shitty as well as buggy the armies are UI wise, and how garbage the support for flat map is? The shitty little toy soldiers run ass backwards at the enemy, and when they sit on some location they are like 10cm away from said location on my physical monitor. I wish there was a way to disable the troops like in EU4 and HoI4, and the flat map made sense. Also allow us to permanently disable some of the alerts at the top, there's plenty of worthless shit like that one that alerts you if you have so much as 1(1) random brat in your court without an expensive education, and lags to fucking hell and back if you dare to hover over it to boot.

Eventually, your control and power will increase with development and technology. I’m playing a game as Scotland and I annexed all my starting vassals (mainly because if Scottish history is anything to go b they’re a fucking menace). I’ve rushed centralization and built bailiffs and boats and it’s really not that bad. I’m still early game though and Scotland isn’t huge at the start. I only have two locations with zero control, and I’m probably going to give in and make them vassals. But those are starting borders. Everything I’ve taken in Ireland is a vassal or fief. I don’t think it’d go well at all otherwise.

Looking at the timelapse maps, I realize nothing has happened outside of what I have caused to happen. The world is frozen still

This wont be fixed soon will it

It’ll probably be a year before the AI truly does things that we expect it to. They seem to have made it more aggressive, but it’s not there yet. I mean, EU4 has been out for over a decade and the AI still doesn’t do what it should in south Asia.

You’re playing the country, not the dynasty. You’ll join a PU, but it’s not as serious as EU4. Think of it how England and Scotland became united by a Scottish king but England still dominated the union and eventually annexed Scotland into a new entity.

>>2214901
Making good AI gets harder the more complex you make a game. EU3 imo has better AI than EU4 or EU5 but its only because the game is much more simple so there are fewer ways for the player to get ahead.
>>
>>2214901
i am guessing that the AI is programmed as a number of mostly-independent systems (e.g. diplomacy, warfare, and cabinet appointments are probably all handled completely independently of each other) which greatly simplifies things but also makes it way worse at long-term planning
considering the sheer size of the game and the number of individual countries there is only so much you can make the AI think about before it rapes even the strongest CPU into submission, so there's definitely a tradeoff between AI capability and performance
>>
EU5 is the spiritual successor to EU3.

tldr:
levies go up front, regulars in reserves. levies have high frontage, but low initiative and morale damage. this means you dont want them sitting in reserves watching your hardened regulars getting butchered. they also lack initiative, so they wont reinforce the front. put them up front as meat shields to take the bad damage, and the regulars in the back (with lower frontage, but more initiative) will reinforce quicker.

You have misunderstood something. Man for man levies have lowest frontage so you need whole 1000 guys to occupy 1 frontage while regular footmen only need 100. Both have 1 combat power per head. Let's say on 2 frontage wide battle you would then have 2000 levy guys (total 2000 power) fighting 200 footmen (200 power). Let's say you have 1000 levy guys die in the front which frees 1 front space, would you rather bring 100 reg. footmen (100 power), or 50 reg. horsemen (200 power) or 500 levy mailed knights (2000 power). It also means if you have trouble filling out the whole frontage in a wide terrain, to help with flanking, regulars will do it easier man-for-man. For reinforcement speed your point still stands.
In later games regular regiment manpower goes up which is main reason why they get better, along with minor stat bonuses.

Low crown power and (as a result) low maximum taxes. Your burghers are happy enough that you could be getting 30+ ducats out of them. Look at your modifiers and try to get higher burgher/estate tax.
For crown power you should always be at 100 legitimacy, it's expensive to get there but once you're at max the cost becomes almost nothing.

automate trade at like 70% of market cap. It is often retarded and only focuses on what makes the most money so you should use the rest to patch the holes where needed. I would also allow it to automatically set admirals and commanders. If you want you can allow it to make buildings for you when you've got a lot in the treasury as well. That's all I personally have used and find helpful.
