How well you think this will perform on strategy games (and specifically the unoptimized garbage Paracuck keeps propping up)? Specs-wise it looks fine, though I don't know how well SteamOS runs games made for Windows. Also even though VR is typically viewed as a meme gadget, imagining the entire world projected on my living room wall for me to paint gives me a massive hard on. What do you guys think?
>>2234272I'll be honest chief, i have no idea. The last thing i remember about VR strategy was a UE4 fan remake of Red Alert 2, it looked promising, but The Corporation of Evil™ shut it down.Although, i bet that something like VR Black & White would go insanely hard.VR is still an unexplored field, decades after its initial inception and a decade after its rapid resurgence, but stuff like apple vision make the whole idea sound cringy as fuck. Its not 90's or 2000's anymore and developers rarely try pushing the envelope, and even if they do, most of the time they are shut down by publishers who want only profits, most of the time at the expense of the quality, or even consoomers who don't want innovation but to just simply consoom cheap copies of what they have already played even if said copies are billion times worse and less innovative if not outright downgrades by the standards of the game they are trying to copy. Perhaps we won't see any progress until the inevitable second crash.
>>2234272why does this crap even exist? it will be useless and dead on arrivaleven as it gets worse, there is still zero reason to use a non-windows pc for gaming and huge reasons to use onethey might as well have called it the terraria machine because the only games people will play on it will be stuff like that>vrexists for coomers
>still no vr strategy gameI am mad
>>2234272EU 5 will probably run fine on it on medium-high grafix
Strategy vidya are generally not very demanding, like the older ones and assorted indies, especially turn-based. I'm sure a non-trivial number of anons do gaming on worn-out old junk possessing a mere fraction of this thing's performance.
>>2234468No one bothers to optimize their games anymore huh
>>2234379I can think of two reasons:1) (if) it is cheap2) lets you play pirated games
>>2234389Just imagine brehs...
>>2236664I said strategy, not visual novellas
>>2234272Its good for strategy games.>specifically the unoptimized garbage Paracuck keeps propping upIt will run but not good.>I don't know how well SteamOS runs games made for Windows.Modern games no problem. Start launching 10 year old games like Far Cry 4 you will run into problems. Proton really doesnt like certain games but it works with most. I would assume their goal in making these SteamBoxes would be the same as Steam Decks: Make a simple platform where the specs are mostly the same and optimize the software side for it.
>>2241640>Start launching 10 year old games like Far Cry 4 you will run into problems. For fuck's sake. I really want to retire my Windows 7 toaster I keep for the purpose but still haven't found a good alternative for playing old games. And I DO play a lot of them
>>2234272I don’t think that strategy gamers are the target audience. The box is for people that have a PC, but want to come out of their bedroom on occasion and play something like a shooter on their bigger screen in the living room without having to purchase an overpriced console, a second copy of a game locked to said console, and some stupid membership to play it online. It’s basically just an alternative to using a steam deck with a dock. And with that in mind I could see myself picking one up if the price is appropriate. Might be more accessible for people who have families and don’t want to be locked away in a separate room too.
>>2236664I want picrel as a vr game
>>2234272i think itll be fine, but idk.
>new steam controller Best thing out of these for strategy games. The trackpad is incredible for mouse movement. I remember on the OG steam controller advertisement they showed someone playing cities skylines since a trackpad is just so much better than a joystick for mouse movement As for the machine, it's hard to say since "strategy games" covers such a huge selection. It should be more powerful than the deck and it runs the same OS, so if any game is certified to run on deck I see no issues with running on the steam machine The frame though, don't bother getting a VR headset if you just plan on using it as a monitor. remember that 2160x2160 is the resolution of the entire periphery, not just the virtual screen displaying your game. Just put that money into a better monitor
>>2242983>The trackpad is incredible for mouse movementI would much rather use a joystick as long as it had a curser rather than a tab function.
>>2243082thank god you don't make controllers
>>2243094Are you telling me you prefer to use laptops without a mouse? Don't act like I'm the delusional one.
>>2243110If the choice is between a trackpad and joystick for mouse movement, a trackpad is vastly superior for control and precise movement than a joystick.A mouse you move around is the best option, but as far as I'm aware, you can't really implement that onto a controller
>>2243266A joystick with a curser that has an adjustable speed is literally a mouse.A trackpad is a trackpad. Unless there’s something special or different about the one’s Valve makes then I don’t understand what you’re on about.
>>2242878AFAIK Stellaris worked really well on the console.
>>2243613an analog joystick is absolutely not the same as a mouse. on joystick you hold it in whatever direction until the cursor reaches its destination. with a trackpad you physically move your to the position you want, which is much more accurate.>Unless there’s something special or different about the one’s Valve makes then I don’t understand what you’re on about.Valve makes good trackpads, but I don't know why you're so adamant about joysticks being better if you haven't even tried them. I've used joysticks and trackpads for aiming in FPS and mouse movement, and I'll take trackpads any day. Joysticks are useful for big turns though, like if you just need to move 180 degrees without being precise
>>2234379It exist essentially as standardized Linux machine.
>>2241965I build my current PC just so I can have Win7 on it. Dual boot but still.
>>2245761>but I don't know why you're so adamant about joysticks being better if you haven't even tried themWho said I never tried them? I have an OG steam deck. Not sure how much they’ve changed, but my preference is a joystick. I do not like trackpads. It’s that simple.
>>2246204Weren't new CPUs outright refusing older Windows installations?
>>2246240maybe
Weirdly the only strategy games I've had issues with were 2D games. Used to have issues with Panzer Corps 1 and Capitalism Lab, but those work now.
Not gonna lie can't wait to play EUV on my couch
>>2234379Valve's 2nd attempt at pushing hardware to get more players to play their own titles through Linux adaptation, and it looks good for anyone who is still on a pre RTX cards or doesn't have a gaming PC. In essence, it's Valves ecosystem to compete with consoles this gen while being as open and PC like as possible without the yearly sub if you think about it.
>>2234272Have you seen RAM prices since the announcement? The project is dead in the water.
>>2280528I blame a certain chosen people of god for this
I would play openxcom on a steam frame in bed
