For Shadow of the Horned Rat, here is a guide which will help you through the game:

>SOTH Guide:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/199268-warhammer-shadow-of-the-horned-rat/faqs/54672

For Dark Omen, here is another indepth guide. Technically, this is more important as getting some magic items will be the difference of finishing the game or restarting. Particularly Mission 10, Blighted Tower.

I had that game on the PS1 but I sucked too hard to complete it. It looks visually good (It is 90s Warhammer after all), I just wish the game had like one extra mode where you can choose a faction and built an army around it and play a match against an opponent of your choice or something like that.
>>
>>2311938
Funnily enough, you can do that with GOG Dark Omen, as in build and make an army to play multiplayer against an opponent. Between Orcs, Humans and Undead. Mind due it is built around the old 90s multiplayer mode but it should be feasible.

Made it to the Dread King and honestly, it's not the mummies, the catapults or the dread king himself who is stopping me, but this fucking necromancer.

>teleports
>one shots my steam tank
>fucks up my pistolers
>instantly teleports back out before i can shoot him

Remove the necromancer and I can legit win this.
>>
>>2312226
wait, the steam tank sticks with you until the end? damn it had that symbol that said it was temporary so when i lost it on one mission to take out some artillery i was like "meh" and kept going. that was like three missions ago, i don't want to replay them all...
>>
You niggers better play custom campaigns
>>
>>2312369
I think you should get a new steam tank at the last mission. Karl mentions it. But just be aware of Blighted Tower and the shield item.

Link?

I hope it's better than the black pyramid.

Beat Dark Omen again and while it went better, it's still a very repetitive ending level.

For those who make it, I will condense what you need and what to do:

>What you need
1. Banner of Wrath. Give to Ragnar's Wolves and use it immediately to hit the necromancer
2. Book of Asur and Wand of Jet. Give to Bright Wizard. If you get the Stun Spell and teleport, you got a chance.
3. Shield of Ptolos. Give to Pistolers

>Strategy

1. Turtle up. Hold your position far left or far right, turtle up and take down the mummies. Flagellents and Great swords should hold the ones to your right (if deploying left) or left (if deploying right)

2. Kill the Necromancer. Keep the Steam Tank in the boundary line and have Ragnar's Wolves on standby. As soon as you see the Necromancer, hit the banner of wrath and hope it kills him.

3. Once you have defeated the initial wave of mummies, send your pistolers to kill the catapults OR teleport your Wizard and use the Fire AOE spell to kill the one on the top right and middle right. Middle right will trigger the dread king.

4. Run over Dread King with Steam Tank.

5. Kite for around 20-30 minutes and finish the last mummies.

6. Snipe the last catapult top left.

7. Mop up the rest.

Well I managed to finally do it. An entire session of SOTH where I didn't need to replay a single mission. Just one straight playthrough.

Sadly the Crossbowmen and Infanty were lost after the Snow Level with the Skaven. The Infantry could have survived but my hellblaster was still locked on to skaven and a stray shell killed the infantry. Only 2 left and then they abandoned the mercenary company.

Still, Bernhardt survived the final battle, so did the Ratslayers and the Wizard. Sadly, nearly everyone else died.
>>
>>2313041
Also I lost Ragnar during Grumm's gate thanks to pathing sadly. Him and the Black Avengers were fighting over who got to enter.

Alas.

I went for another try to not get the infantry friendly fired. Fortunately my save left off in Extermination, the very level they were killed by the hellcannon.

Ironically, the Cavalry were routed though Morgan did flee the field alive thankfully. Lt Shepke survived this time at least with the rest of his infantry but damn it was still rough with all the artillery imploding.

Now I can rest.

Is there room for Mark of Chaos here? Haven't gotten around to Dark Omen yet because I started replaying MoC again and was reminded how much I prefer it's presentation to Total Warhammer. The aesthetics, the ui, voice acting, the fact that it comes with an army painter, all make up for the easy campaign and clunky gameplay. I wish they included a grand campaign like Dark Crusade/Soulstorm did, and a few more armies like Bretonnia/Wood Elves/Lizardmen.
>>
>>2315453
Sure, why not?

MoC definitely had a nice grit to it and still has the best opening cinematics to date. I mainly enjoyed it fir the Orc and Chaos campaign and testing units in Skirmish against one another.
>>
>>2317821
>Chaos campaign
I've read it is much harder than the Empire due to the almost complete lack of ranged units for Chaos. Is dat true?

Also, how strong are heroes? The review I read said they are powerful as hell.

>testing units in Skirmish against one another.
unit testing really showed me how MoC skewed towards tabletop rules with how much weight chance had on overall success; even units specialized in doing a particular thing can get royally screwed by bad rolls.
>>2317831
Chaos does have pic related and the hellcannons. The axe throwers have shorter range and even less armor than any other ranged unit, but they still get the job done. As for the heroes, I haven't done too much testing, but the general rule applies that dedicated fighters beat wizards, and melee heroes are more dependent on skill allocation/level when fighting other melee heroes.
>>
>>2317831
By comparison? Yes, absolutely but overall the Chaos Campaign is still something you can easily beat the first time, even on Hard mode.

In fact, your melee infantry units are the best in the game, only being overshadowed (slightly) by Black Orcs who are consequently obliterated by Chaos Knights who just annihilate everything.

Heroes are very strong but you need to be careful not to get them killed. Always attach them to a unit if possible, especially the sorcerer, do NOT lose the sorcerer. I would suggest mixing in Duel and Command skills (The far right one which boosts troops) for Thorgar and for the sorcerer the far left and far right skill trees.

JUST A NOTE***********

For the Battle March Orc / Dark Elf campaign, make conscious effort to level up the Main Character Sorceress and specialise her in duelling. Why? Because there is a mission which hinges on her winning a duel at the end and if you lose, it's all for nought.

>>2318623
Yeah for sure. I mean, my autism had me test out how many times Chaos Warriors against black orcs and after I'd say at least a dozen attempts, the Warriors eventually *rolled* well but overall, it is definitely less random than SOTH, there is more consistency.

I'm not op, I'm the guy who likes MoC and wanted to talk about it while trying Dark Omen, and shit moves slow enough here I can have actual conversation instead of ratniggers, vtuber/e-celeb faggots, and gooners drowning the thread in their garbage. Niche boards are the only functional ones left, and just barely.

How are you finding Dark Omen? While I do like playing Orcs and Chaos in MoC, I actually prefer the gameplay of Dark Omen and Horned Rat. It's hard as all hell but the units feel more personal.

Taken from /vr/ though maybe one of the anons in that thread from a week or two ago is floating around:

>Shattered Pass

This is the set up you want to have. It's not fool proof but it works around half the time. Off image is the third Carlson guard deployed north east of the deployment flag.

TURN OFF ALL AI ON ALL OF YOUR UNITS!

Here are the steps:

1. Send the first Carlson Guard as far north as possible to distract the Orcs.

2. Focus your mortars on the orc archers. Failing this, focus on the approaching black orcs

3. Use the amber wizard to use magic spears on the troll. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART! Kill the troll and this becomes easier.

4. Let the other two carlson guards take the charges and keep blasting the Black Orcs. If it looks like they're going to break through set up a flank or rear charge with Ragnar and the Grudgebringer Cavalry

Keep firing and good luck.

Wait for the Orcs to come to you at your deployment zone. Once they commit, set up attacks and from there, it's a lot of luck.

Use the wizards slow spell on any additional Orcs coming to advance.

Once they're dead, head north west and kill the Orc archers and doomdivers. Be careful here cause a lucky doomdiver can wipe a unit. Make your formation long i.e 5-6 ranks to reduce incoming damage.

Good luck, this is easily the hardest mission in the game.

PRO TIP: If you are uncertain, you can just skip this mission to no penalty

>How are you finding Dark Omen?
It's charming. The cutscenes are hilariously melodramatic, and on top of that Bernhardt feels the need to make every word out of his mouth part of a one-liner. The controls take some getting used to as I keep trying to left-click a banner, then right-click to place a unit. The drag and drop style is a bit different, but manageable. I do appreciate they gave a range indicator when selecting fire. I guess they hadn't figured out how to implement a radius line that was also visible. And speaking of visibility, I really like the classic fantasy aesthetic they had going on with Dark Omen and Horned Rat; might be a tad generic by today's standards, but it's been so long since someone made something just baseline fantasy that it's just genuinely pleasant. The sprites are nice, the maps are nice, and the soundtrack is great (if repetitive). Overall it's good. My only real criticism outside of the obscure but important details is the limited scope; it's just the empire (silly German accents included), undead, and orcs. I know there are mods that add to the base roster, but there's only so much modders can do.

>While I do like playing Orcs and Chaos in MoC, I actually prefer the gameplay of Dark Omen and Horned Rat. It's hard as all hell but the units feel more personal.
Definitely harder. If anything, MoC is tragically easy, and could have used a slight rebalancing, but I can tell its a consequence of them wanting to avoid the frustration of previous games to reach broader appeal. I feel a good amount of the difficulty is just obscure details (what does what and goes where/location of magic items/which are absolutely critical for beating a level) and the relatively slow responsiveness of units (i.e. if you screwed up your positioning and left your artillery or wizard vulnerable, there probably is no saving them).

>Pic related
Nice. Center orc looks almost like they used it to model the talking head in Dark Omen.

add.
I also don't know how important it is to empower units. Seems more like a morale boost more than anything since they shout "To the death!" when it's maxed out. I don't really bother since I hate spam-clicking. It's not critically important, is it?
>>
>>2319989
Empowering units is very important. It grants them a significant durability and offensive boost to the point that for those 5-10 seconds, you can more or less leave them to their business to boost somewhere else on the battlefield.

I also need to warn you that you need to get the Shield of Ptolos during the Tower mission with the Orcs (You'll get the steam tank). This will make the final mission easier.

As well, during the first undead mission where you protect the town, you need to burn a library to get a special item which gives a wizard +1 spell. Finally there is another item in the vampire level where you can give the wizard the wand of jet, which deducts spell cost by 1.

Get those three items and the last two missions, by far the hardest in the game by a metric ton, become very feasible to win.

Also be certain to get the banner of wrath too in the first mission protecting the steam tank. You get it from the orcs who come from the hill. If you fail to get it, restart. This applies to all of the above items.
>>
>>2319997
>Empowering units is very important. It grants them a significant durability and offensive boost to the point that for those 5-10 seconds, you can more or less leave them to their business to boost somewhere else on the battlefield.
Well damn. I hate all the busywork, but I can deal with it. It does make me wonder why it's even a thing. To my knowledge it isn't a translation of anything from tabletop, so did they just put it in worried that people would get bored given the pace of the game, or just a way to compensate for small errors in micro?

And thanks for the tips; Shield of Ptolos usually comes up whenever people talk about Dark Omen. I had to redo the first undead mission because I missed the item there, though I realized buildings could be destroyed when a stray cannonball took down a farm. I was worried destroying them all would lead to a failstate, so I just left the last ones alone. Took me by surprise seeing the npc run out screaming as a he burned alive.
>>
>>2320454
I would wager they did it to give more interaction for the player but also to help in the fluctuating nature of the dice rolls taking place in the background, so there can be some sense of agency. At least in DO you can see visual feedback of it functioning.

>Took me by surprise seeing the npc run out screaming as a he burned alive.

Grim. Still, let us know when you hit the Black Pyramid, it's tough. That or Mousillion, the second last mission.
