Even after theodosius, it was a single roman empire that was ruled by multiple emperors. the "western roman empire" and "eastern roman empire" are just the names of regions, not historical states. 200 years into our Mamluk campaign and I think that we are done. Our army and navy quality is the highest in the entire world and Alexandria is worth double that of the English Channel.

I haven't played eu5 yet but the complaints I've heard were that blobbing is very stupid economically and late game it's just extremely costly while peace deals are the eu4 equivalent of having -25% admin efficiency.
Blobbing should be costly but not completely counterproductive or tedious. World conquests are stupid as fuck and I hated how the gameplay of eu4 just came down to map painting. But at least let me restore Trajan's borders nigga, even if it means I'm super overextended by the end of it

Landmarks are something that's very important too for immersion. Even if it's not to scale, seeing the pyramids or the dome of the rock really makes you feel more like you're in Egypt or Jerusalem. Like the graphic of the Theodosian walls and compact urban site of Constantinople really makes it feel more like the heavily defended metropolis it was, as opposed to just any other province.
It really does make you wonder how anyone can like the vic2 map, it's so fucking bland and boring to look at, you're basically zooming into a png

People really confuse historical mechanics with historical outcomes. A game can have historical mechanics, but very ahistorical borders by the end date. History is full of the right people coming up at the right time and completely random events. If the caliphate or mongol or Frankish empire never existed, you'd be calling them absolute bullshit blobs if you saw a player with their borders in ck3. All it takes in history to make or break a kingdom is one bad or good ruler. GSGs would be extremely boring if they tried to be as historical as possible when it comes to borders, it'd always be the same thing. You can railroad it a bit with historical mechanics though. For example, Britain's geography making them prone to Norse invasions, or Iberia's location making the reconquista inevitable, or Rome being completely surrounded by enemies while infighting making their fall inevitable. Saying a game isn't historical because outcomes are different is very stupid and completely ignores what actually makes a game interesting

paradox games have neither and i doubt anyone here in /gsg/ is stupid enough to confuse the two. if they do so it's on purpose

Lithuania is no little fish.
