Thoughts on boomer wargames? I've been learning the new flashpoint campaigns over the last couple of days.I've been on and off with War in the East 2 as well, but the lack of simultaneous turns is really immersion breaking
>>2325407ahem, my probelm with these is that they're turned based. that's why im cautiously optimistic about pic rel
Problem is that they become too turbo autistic to enjoyThey need someone who is completely free to keep up with all the variables and details in the game
I don't typically like wargames. They're actually puzzle games in disguise. Unless they have a random scenario generator.
I enjoyed WitE2, but it has a massive problem… the AI gets unlimited movement. This means that it will always be forming crazy unrealistic defense lines. You’ll get naval infantry units that were in Leningrad way down in the southern Steppes. That’s just a silly result, but the gameplay result is extremely frustrating. If you don’t encircle, during the AI turn the unit will magically teleport hundreds/thousand+ miles away. This happens en masse and it happens every single turn (does not apply to encircled/isolated units). It’s a crutch for the AI, but these games are supposed to be about realism, detail, etc. kinda defeats the point of wrestling with all this shit if the AI is going to get cute like that. There are fun hex and counters out there that don’t pretend to be hyper realistic. I enjoy the unity of command series (puzzle game comment valid here) and panzer general is always king. The field of glory games are solid as well.
>>2325475>Problem is that they become too turbo autistic to enjoythis. there's too much shit on the board, and every little piece of shit unit has 100 different statistics attached to it.it takes just as much if not more brainpower to play chess, but chess doesn't clutter up the screen with a million numbers
>>2325678To me it's honestly unbelievable that they thought it was OK to release and then not resolve the AI problem. If at least the Soviet AI can't win fairly with the same tools as a player, it is not ready to be played. I REALLY want to like WiTE2, and the effort put in and immersion is really something special, so it's so disappointing and basically unplayable for me that it can't behave realistically. I wonder if the scenarios are better than the main campaign because of their limited scope...
>>2325407>boomer wargamesare played on a tabletop, kid
>>2325407Ive had a lot of fun with Second Front. Its basically just Advanced Squad Leader but its been a good time regardless.https://store.steampowered.com/app/1148490/Second_Front/
>>2325407shadow empire is about the only one I've found that's fine
>>2325407all the good H&C games are tabletop/vassal/TTS only.
>>2326266>stands in your general direction
Is Scourge of War remaster good?
>>2325415that gameplay concept but at a slightly larger scale and focused on the Schlieffen plan would go very hard
>>2326970>Moltke the Younger simulatorcould be kino
>>2325407For anyone with the time, patience, and a willingness to learn, I would have to give "Hearts of Iron 3" a plug.If you play it railroaded its a fairly good simulation of WW2. The economic and technological aspects are interesting. Like becoming starved of resources as Britain because of the Uboats. Suffering from fuel shortages as Germany. Having a large but technologically backwards army as Russia. The fun part is you can try dealing with these sorts of issues in different ways. But you can also go off the historical rails and do crazy stuff. Like become a warmongering USA and basically invade everyone, including Britain and France. Wipe the Japanese out before they become a problem. Its got it fair share of problems like any game, it has its retarded aspects. I know the OOB puts some people off but I actually found that part of the fun ( maybe I am autistic ). You can game the system once you know how it works, but by the same token you can also impose simple restraints on yourself to make for a more challenging game.I found it the best grand strategy game in that era. I never liked the direction they took with its sequel HoI4.Most exciting game I had was as a noob playing Germany. Went on a rampage and invaded Britain after defeating France. With the bulk of my forces balls deep in Britain and my navy largely sunk by the RN, Russia declared war on me and swarmed across the border. Which I had left virtually undefended. There followed a nail biting defense while I tried to extract enough forces from Britain and get them back in time to fight off the Russian hordes. All while trying to finish off Britain who were mounting a stubborn defense and making life hell for my supply convoys.I must have played that game over ten years ago and yet I still remember the sheer desperation and the bloody, bitterly contested battles fought to save myself from total defeat.Just be aware you need to get the Podcat file to make it run on modern computers.
>>2325407>nebulous fleet command>upcoming conquest mode>basically empire at war for autists>operational/strategic level warfighting including economy, production, ship rearm, refit and resup, depots for ammo and parts, etc etc>super fucking hyped on the idea>especially since skirmish mode is full of meta sweats>basically advertise conquest mode for a year and a half>every>single>devlog>is mazer saying the conquest mode is fantastic and all the testers love it>every devlog>one month after one of those same devlogs>"actually conquest mode sucks cause we can't do meta fleets, the testers have ALWAYS hated it, I hate it, it suck, it's bad, I'm also gonna throw the most random shade at highfleet for no reason, instead I'm gonna make homeworld with hex grid travel, trust me you'll like it more :D'>pissed at this decision>ask in the discord if there is ever going to be the chance for conquest to come back>get bombarded with 'no you'll like this more and if you don't you might as well leave cause it's clear this game isn't for you :3' type comments>mfwmazer had a literal golden fucking goose of a game in terms of how easy it would have been to approach and master, how in depth the ship customisation is without being TOO in depth to the point of confusion, a great idea of economically driven war that has to be countered and abused by the player, just great all around. Instead they troon out, tell us we're wrong for liking what we like and we should like what THEY want us to like because they know better. Mazer robbed us of empire at war: autisitc niche edition and I'll never forgive HIM
>>2328959lucky for me, I prefer the the current concept of it, I really don't care about the economy bullshit and multiple fleets, I just want to lead a single one through a, preferably dynamic, warsorry for your loss or something
>>2328973If it was JUST a change in what mazer wanted to do, sure whatever. It's the fact that him and his closest followers have the audacity to tell other people 'you'll like this more' or 'you don't actually know what you want' that angers me. A full year and a half of devlogs of what is basically lying through his teeth about 'it's good', alongside a complete fucking over of new players overhaul to missles and hulls, mazers making radical changes to the game for a few loud people without taking a step back to see what the overall opinion is on those changes. When the outcry about conquests cancellation is so great you're basically forced to release it in an unfinished state in hopes people stop talking about it, ya it's fair to assume people were keen on it, or a rapidly dying multiplayer scene only frequented by the meta fleet building top tiers and maybe a new guys once in a while that puts changes in to only further give the meta players an easier time of dunking on new guys. Suffice to say, mazer isn't very good at community outreach barring the very few, very loud minority that orbit him.
>>2325678>the AI gets unlimited movement.WTF?I played WitE 1 and was bitterly disappointment by the bullshit. Especially since it was an expensive game and held up as some sort of Holy Grail of wargaming.I asked around if WitE2 was better and got mixed replies, but no one ever mentioned unlimited AI movement. That's beyond retarded, a complete deal breaker. >kinda defeats the point of wrestling with all this shit if the AI is going to get cute like that. Exactly. Lol, its like having a super realistic WW1 game where a head wind limits the range of your aircraft but the AI can shoot its artillery from Berlin straight through the Swiss mountains, curve around and land a direct hit on Paris.
>>2328959Yea it was such a big disappointment. Could've revitalised the game, elevated it from meta autist ship combat, to chad strategic battles. But no, strung along...
