It doesn't mog AoE or people would have actually played it. It's a really good and interesting game though, it owes more to Civ than it does age of Empires, shame its mechanics were never really replicated elsewhere

RoN is failed because it took an uninteresting AoE clone and an uninteresting Civ clone and tried to mash them together. The basic mechanics are just boring to play, the maps are barren, the music and sound is super low quality, and the campaigns are a total drag. I'm convinced that RoN fans are the kind of people who pick the biggest map in AoE, the easiest AI, and then still spend two hours building their base before moving out.
