by using a merchant to collect trade you're losing out on the trade power multiplier you get from having all your merchants steer trade. i'm betting you don't have 100% control of genua, so that's a mistakegiving that land to your subject would give them more control over the baltic trade node therefore more money and would make them build up to their bloated march force limit and make them a much more formidable strategic asset
