That identity was never up for change. That whole system should have been focused on the influence of the "Latins" (contemporary Venetians, Genoese and other Italians) in Byzantine society, either because of decline (Latins getting more concessions, possibly converting to Catholicism to get help from Western Europeans etc.) or because of resurgence (annexing parts of Italy and having to deal with the new Latin sphere of the Roman Empire in Constantinople). Being Greek in language and culture isn't up for debate.
