Is it worth it to learn hoi2(darkest hour) or hoi3 at this moment? I found hoi4 too gamey and the map looks ugly. What game should I play among them? I've played vic2 100+ hours and I've heard hoi3 uses the same engine so would it be more easy to learn it? idk. what do you think?
never played a paradox game in my life, why are you asking me?
the earlier hois aren't less gamey, they're just more janky
>>2373108Not really. HOI4 is one of the best games ever made, so there's no real point in going back to the previous games.
>>2373108hoi3 is fun, but has a lot of problems wuth it. random crashes, random bugs that freeze the game, having to download an 8gb ram exe since the original exe is 4gb, etc. i do prefer it to hoi4, but it can be a pain to run. i also dont know how well it works on win11 since i stopped playing paradox games awhile back
>>2373108HoI3 is notoriously difficult to get into, which is probably why paradox leaned in completely the opposite direction with HoI4
>>2373108>hoi3Unironically shilled only by contrarians who think old=good who don't even play that game
>>2373108>hoi2no>hoi3yesit's not a hard game despite brainlets always parroting that meme. just boot up the game, do the tutorial, mess around with the menus. go and play it and you will learn it>>2373128>>2373184cope>>2373247seethe
>>2373256post how many hours you got in hoi3
>>2373108HoI3 is awesome. Probably the best GS WW2 sim in existence. But you may have trouble running it on windows 10+ ( I still run windows 7 for a variety of nefarious reasons ) Dunno if there is a solution, but it would be worthwhile checking out the official forums and asking.I believe you need something called the podcat file. >>2373184>why yes I do enjoy prancing around in my mother's panties with a dildo in my mouth, how did you know? The post.
>>2373108hoi3 still stands as paradox's best wargame with a satisfying and historical simulationhoi2 is best for larping with some good systems but an overall lackluster combat systemhoi3 also looks great imo and really captures the feeling of a ww2 grand strategyit is sadly less fleshed out than their newer titles and would benefit a lot from more dlcs it will never getit also never captured the same modding scene their other games managed tohoi3 isn't the easiest game to just pick up and play but the automation is perfectly fine to use for most things until you are happy taking over>>2373227i haven't had a crash in vanilla hoi3 for a very long timemodded yes, absolutely, which is why i gave up on bice
>>2373336>>2373342post hoi3 steam hours
>>2373227>having to download an 8gb ramNewfag, instead of downloading more RAM, just delete system32
Remember HoI2's Armageddon scenario? It was supposed to be a somewhat balanced alt-history battleground. Never played it myself, though I'm wondering if I should give it a go. Getting the HoI itch nowadays
>>2373108>I found hoi4 too gamey The game is too "gamey"? What sort of criticism is this?
If HOI3 is so good, how come everyone abandoned it to make HOI4 mods?
>>2373108I want to learn darkest hour
>>2373368SOUL graphics
>>2373368i remember playing it a long time ago, i have some vague memory that a lot of the playable nations didn't start with the materials they needed to use most of their ICs, and their allied AI partners just didn't trade it to them
>>2373595derp
>>2373343>not pirating the game, playing it for 2000hrs and then pity-buying it on steam for pennies years later, only for letting the game rot in your bibngmi
bumpy bumpy
>>2373108As I understood it, HOI3 is a less polished HOI4, so maybe the move for you would be to mod HOI4 until it behaves the way you want. As for DH, I've heard HOI4 currently plays better, though it's still worth trying out. I've been putting off learning DH so I can't actually tell you if it's better or not than HOI4
>>2380288>HOI3 is a less polished HOI4No, not at all. You haven't played HoI3 either, it seems
>>2380288you're retarded
>>2373108>hoi3>retro
>>2380320We are further away from HoI3 than Bush was from Reagan
>>2373108Lots of newfag basedboys on here. Darkest Hour and HoI3 both do very different things, but if you enjoy the political "free-play" aspect of the game DH is about as good as it gets and it strikes a good balance between military micro management and strategic depth. It is my most played game in the series by far, and my most played paradox game overall. If you're into mods it also has some very good ones, like the original Kaiserreich mod, World in Flames for a better ww2, Fallout mod for sci-fi etc. Give it a proper try.>>2373368>not playing with countersThrew up in my mouth a little.
>>2380810What's your take on Arsenal of Democracy?
>>2373108>original hoi2No>darkest hourYes
>>2380812Arsenal of Democracy>Same map as HOI2, improved tech tree and combat mechanics. Basically feels like an expansion pack for vanilla HOI2Darkest Hour>Updated map with many more provinces allowing for more encirclements and strategic positioning. Also an improved tech tree that starts in Vic2 tech level and continues into early cold war. Game ends in 1967 and has a WWI scenario going from 1914-1920 that is pretty fun. Has more mods and is more enjoyable overall, feels like HOI2.5 rather than an expansion. Combat is somewhat more realistic as things like amphibious invasions are a scaled tech which means you won't have giant AI invasions happening all the time. For the OP:HOI2 is the most "railroady" HOI game. It's just based around strategic combat in WWII and the economy to support it, in theory you can change your country's ideology or switch alliances but it's incredibly difficult. If you play as an Allied nation, you will fight as an Allied nation most likely. The tech system is great because each nation has real historical tech teams that can only research certain things, meaning minors with shitty tech teams will never have panzer divisions, strategic bombers or nuclear programs. The most fun is playing a minor with decent tech teams and doing something ahistorical but still realistic like Hungary developing nuclear weapons or Canada pivoting into a small mobile tank-based army. HOI3 is a lot more granular on every level. Tech is frustrating in comparison with 2 but has the neat "theory vs practice" thing which means you get bonus or malus researching something if you actually use it. Combat is somewhat easier because they implemented the AI-led army OOB and you can steamroll most minors with a couple cav/arm divisions and a handful of infantry. They removed a lot of the gamier functions from 2 (carriers being doomsday weapons, infantry being the only division worth building). You need to get all expansion packs to enjoy it
>>2380893>Darkest HourOne of the fun mods is one that lets you choose the election results in Germany in 1933, if you go Weimar it's boring as fuck and you just have to fight a civil war against Nazi freikorpsBut if you choose the communist party and win the civil war there's an option to either become a Soviet satellite, or to invite Trotsky out of exile to lead a global revolution and you get to play a conventional German blitzkrieg world conquest game but as commies instead of nazis because the Allies and USSR both hate your guts
Pic related is from the last time I played a HOI 2 derivative. Arsenal of Democracy, 1936 start. I think I stopped because I couldn't be bothered with taking over all the Asian wasteland with zero infra>>2380893>>2380903Man I really should give DH a go one of these days
Hoi3 is a game everyone wants to have played, none wants to play
>>2373449Impossible to mod hence why everyone moved to Vic.>>2373593I agree but EU2 and 1 is even more sovl.
>>2373256>do the tutorialHoI3 has possibly the worst tutorial ever made.
>>2373108oughh BB
>>2382061Jumping straight into the main campaign and getting wrecked is the only tutorial for Paradox games
>>2373108>Is it worth it to learn hoi2(darkest hour) or hoi3 at this moment?Yes. They are good games.
>>2380893Wasn't everyone complaining that Darkest Hour kept railroading its players
>see thread>decide to play HoI2 again after so many years and set up a game>realize I still don't know whether "AI aggressiveness" setting pertains only to diplomacy or if it also applies to warfareI didn't expect to be filtered so early
>>2380893I don't agree at all that combat is easier in 3 than 2.In DH>spam infantry>make a hq>never upgrade>making anything other than infantry is typically a mistake>rarely do encirclementsIn 3>have to make a variety of units>infantry alone will lose>frontage is not determined by hqs>armor is a mechanic>softness is a mechanic>provinces are significantly smaller and terrain plus even weather matters moreMajors in both games can simply right click on minors and typically win. I do think DH minors are done better than 3's minors, for a variety of reasons, but that is tangential.
>>2384405Wait wasn't softness also a thing in HOI 2?
>>2384410yeah actually it isi forgot because divisions and brigades are completely differentit's combined arms which is absent
