Guncrawlers are modelled as 'big biological units' similar to blaster bugs, which also means the big game hunter nukes them with bonus damage. Also why they have morale.

My advice would be to give it to SL who use Squad Weapons as their main source of damage, and use ELSA as infinite ammo back up against heavily armored troops, SL's like Yaz, Lim or Vamplew. Preferably if their squad weapons deal good suppression.

ap ammo and pouches are, themselves, cheaper but also require good weapons and squaddies to be effective
in contrast the elsa is 50 supply and is all a sl needs to be effective
you don't need squaddies, you don't need armor, you don't need support at, or weapon accessories
all you really need is camo and scavenger rags/jaeger fatigues
3 shots at 8 range doing 240 armor damage or 120 hp damage with the same penetration as crowbars is enough to kill almost any unit in two salvos

it has a place in almost any composition as a cheap and versatile response to virtually any threat
i'd class it as one of the best items easily
9 laser rifles is obviously stronger but also costs more than double the plasma gun and has significantly more falloff

Carda has a pretty solid morale buff skill, I've had some success using her as a pure scout/call-out-target character. As you said yourself, share the load is great for defensive missions where you can just set her up with an ATGM paired with a marker SL.
I guess Bog is usable as the cheapest possible option if you want a rocket organ. That's about it.
Vamplew's unique, in my opinion, sucks. But that is kind of due to the fact the game's meta atm is not being shot at all. However, he starts with 105 AP and has much better crit chance than other 2 star SLs. Just use him as a general infantryman without any specialization. The out of cover perk is excellent vs menace because they will very rarely be in cover

All three of those have being cheap as one of their main features, which is mostly irrelevant now that they casualized the supply economy to shit so they lose a lot of their appeal. Bog and Carda suffer double here, because they also lost their promotion tax advantage. They might become good early game picks again if they ever unfuck the balance. Vamplew on the other hand could use an armor rework, because his heavy armor focus makes little sense in a game where heavy armor is almost always the inferior choice.

That said:

Dedicated tank hunter. She gets the relevant perks for it and Share the Load means she can take more ammo than everyone else. Early game she can an RPG, later on she can upgrade to an ATGM.
Her personal perk guarantees she has good accuracy after the first few turns, and if you take her as a starter her top tier growth makes up for her crappy base stats in the long run.

He's cheap as shit, which used to make him a great early-game pilot option so you can afford to field vehicles more consistently before you have higher supply limits and other ways to bring the cost down. But again, that's become mostly irrelevant. He's still a pilot which is good, but he's easily the worst pilot on the roster now.

His base cost isn't as low as the other two, but his armor discount used to be a decent way to save some supplies. Combined with a nice selection of promotions, he was the ideal guy to put in the (heavy, expensive) pirate boarding armor as jumpjet infantry. He can still do that very well, but his advantage of getting armor for cheap is less relevant.
His unique perks might fool you into thinking he should be a tank, but you never want to deliberately put people in the line of fire in this game so it's less that you should build him as a tank and more than he'll be less fucked when you accidentally overextend or have him caught out of cover, which is still good for jumpjet infantry.

Vamp is the cheap heavy armour user. His perks are designed for him to be a suppressing unit. (Ignoring ap loss from suppress/consecutive hardware usage). You either use him as a tanky lmg or smg squad.
That said, giganigga is the better tank with momentum and reduced suppression. He's much more expensive though.

Carda is the potential character. If you constantly use her she becomes good due to her 9 growth stat. You definitely need athletic and buff on her if you're using tripod weapons.

Bog is the really cheap vehicle support with recycled parts. Put bog in a pirate truck and use a rocket organ with fragmentation.

You can stick her with a long tank gun and take both AP reducing skills and take her bonus aim and damage against marked targets to delete tanks. Also she does wonders with the howitzer mortar.
She can use the second tank shot for 35 AP and then move afterwards, slowly inching forward. Great with Pike, but then again, Pike is great in every squad configuration.

you say it like being a cheap radar and being the most cost effective scout in the game is a bad thing. Also with his perks, upgrade him to a radar atv and carry some vtam missiles so that you can overload, lucky shot, vtam a target, and then either use radar or pop smoke for defense. very useful.

Vamplew, you don't really want to be shot at, at all, but with vamp you can at least bring good armor. you would think the best thing to do would be to load up on armor and yolo down the middle, but that's just a road to being suppressed (it can work, his ability works well with smoke grenades or target designators, or drones that don't rely on accuracy but require a lot of ap) He's actually better at wearing better than normal armor and engaging from distance where enemy attacks will do less suppression and damage, but also tick up his counter for when he can attack back. You don't want to take 4 attacks a turn, lose all your armor and get pinned down, but you do want to take about 1-2 attacks a turn at further range so that every other turn you can snipe or shoot long distance like crazy.

disappointing that they think the next patch will be small since the last patch wasn't that big either, Crafting is nice, but having the equipment require encountering the current late game threat in order to be craftable is weird since in order to unlock the equipment you have to beat the units that you would want the equipment for to beat. So I just kind of get to what I assume is the mid game and find myself not really testing the new equipment out since its just seal clubbing.

Light weapons being able to be slotted into medium weapon slots is cool, I literally just ran into that problem in my game last night where I had two vehicles but only one medium weapon. I wasn't expecting that and seeing even medium walkers able to take light weapons is interesting to me. The vehicle modularity and the different types of vehicles is a great selling point and I kind of hope they lean into it more.

Though I was feeling worse about the updates since i thought the [Redacted] update was one of the major content updates and I was majorly disappointed, but then I looked at the road map again and the redacted update is actually separate from major content updates. So hopefully the next major update pushes the game more into the mid-late game.

It's funny that you mention those two, because they go great together. Since MI ideally wants to get out of the vehicle, fire a couple of shots, then get in again, you rarely want to spend the AP to deplay them so Pointfire is great. For similar reasons Run & Gun is also great on MI since you always start your turn with a move action (getting out of the taxi).
Pointfire is also good on jetpack squads because they'll want to deploy as little as possible as well to stay mobile, since you can't jump while deployed.

Don't give him a medium weapon, and then just give him era and advanced sensors, or other defensive equipment like smoke launchers or camo netting. or even extra ammo for his light weapon.

I actually like Achilleas also as a transport, but less of an APC and more of an IFV, since his traits. And since he's going to be fighting more I pair him with the squad that doesn't have mobile infantry or is worse as mobile infantry squad, since they'll be fighting dismounted mostly.

I think bog is the worst transport, but best in a utility cheap role, while Rewa and Ivory, are both way better at combat than being transports, since they're not as tanky and are better with heavier weapons

Don't use SIPV, it's s trash. It barely protects more than the soft armour while costing twice as much. Give the crocodile to Pike instead of Sy, her accuracy is shit. Sy should use the grenade launcher instead because it has an accuracy bonus. Take suicide drones if you can get them, those are really good against their walkers. Carda should use something like the heavy machine gun instead, it's can kill the same targets the RGL can while also being good against infantry. Try to get binoculars too and put it on Pike so you can see their snipers.

Might as well just get a load-bearing rig so you can take extra grenades or drugs or whatever. I'm also not convinced that the GMW is a good choice for MI, give it to Pike or Carda.

Not sure what your plan is here. The cookie cutter Pike build is to make him a support unit, but your choices don't really make sense for that. Even if you want to build him as a rifle squad (which is a valid option), I'd sooner take something like Athletic or Solid Grouping. And you'd probably want to put him in some light armor in that case. The value of New Tricks is questionable, though probably easier to justify on rifle squad Pike than on support Pike.

I have no opinion on Unbreakable. I build Rewa for pure offense so a defensive perk like that doesn't even cross my radar. I dislike the Auto-Laser though. It's got decent penetration and it's nice that you have essentially infinite ammo, but in terms of damage output I find that it always underperforms compared to the Autocannon.

I typically take Athletic over Scout on her, so she can better keep up despite her low starting AP, but this looks like a perfectly decent build to me.

I'm not a big fan of Sy in general, but I guess giving her a Crocodile to finish off big targets and hopefully trigger Trinketing is a decent use of her. Just mind her shitty base accuracy though. Maybe consider giving her some consumable accessory so you can get more mileage out of Scavenger. Also probably don't need the armor on her if she's going to be a sniper.

I'd say the main things you lack for dealing with RA is a decent scout/spotter (though in a pinch you can just give the Camo Kit to Carda for a decent scout), as well as some anti-armor

A lot of Carda's issues stem from the fact that

I always go Pike/Lim/Rewa/Darby since I think those are more or less the best options you can get for each role. Pike as scout/ap buffer/call-out-target, Lim as mobile infantry, Rewa as the best pilot atm unless you're confident banking on Achilles' shield guard, and Darby is meta since concealment is meta.

KBAR is a long range monster early on, but a combination of enemies in cover, long range and low early accuracy of SL's means their killing power is not actually as great as you think. And when SL's get more powerful you should get the KBAR variants or HAMMER instead.
ARC is way better at killing and suppression but also way shorter range.
KPAC is a good middleground, suppresses people to hell and back, but at a more comfortable range and with acceptable damage.
Give it hollowpoints.

The problem is getting hollowpoints is rng, especially early game, and I've personally found its not very good at suppression due to aforementioned early sl accuracy issues
the g3 usually kills at least one guy, which suppresses, and the arcs killing ability also leads to suppression
albeit, I am using 8 man squads so maybe in 6 man squads the kpac edges out the other options?
I like the shotguns but the 2 tiles of range really do make a difference when engaging pirates
I also give my g3s the starting mag pouches on expert and its usually enough to suppress the enemy and get guys to wavering for the arcs to close in and solidify the mass route and execution

I'm not saying I'm totally right, I'm just saying in my experience, the kpac's range has not been helpful, and it doesn't seem to suppress as often as its talked about

You're using it wrong. Rend becomes increasingly better as the ROF increases.
Rend smgs one shot every infantry, every alien, and light vehicles. They two shot medium vehicles and cause defects on heavy vehicles.

Darby. Concealment is too strong. It looks like they're changing late game factions to have more detection methods albeit.
Achilles. He's the strongest pilot. With the promotion change, there's no reason to take a cheaper pilot early.
Tech. He's the tankiest infantry in the game. He doesn't provide immediate benefits in your first op. Once you loot a jetpack or tripod weapon, he's great.

The question for me is Carda or Lim. Considering that I'd rather promote the other 3 first, I usually take Carda due to the innate growth stat.

Range is king, period. People say concealment is OP, but concealment is just an abstraction of range. If you outrange your target, they cannot fight back. And with how tight the action point economy is, the less you have to move into range, the more shooting you can do.

You don't need medbay if you have WOO, once you have above 70 troopers, consider replacing WOO with Salvage operations.
Keep Fixer. Fixer is GOOD.
Repair bay is useless most of the time. Just get more vehicles by looting the Rogue Armies with Salvage Operations. More vehicles means you can just swap pilots into undamaged ones.

The only people I don't give it to are Tech since he gets around having to deploy for things, or lim because he's usually mounted so the movement cost is pointless, and run and gun and point fire are a better combo than anything that needs deployment, especially for mobile infantry. Darby also doesn't really need it since ideally her concealment negates any defensive bonuses, and she's already so accurate that she doesn't need the bonus from deploying usually, the movement cost is nice, but she's so speedy that you don't really need it if you're just aiming to keep up with the rest of the army.

Early game, particularly in Expert, you should fill up all your slots with Woos. Manpower can end a run if you dont fill it up.
After that I replace the damaged med bay with an Advanced Repair Bay.
Getting intel is important to identify turrets and vehicles that start near your deployment zone.
Getting a bunch of laser turrets is generally considered best in slot.

The kpac with a grenade launcher attachment is garbage. It's more expensive, but performs worse. The grenade launcher shoots a single grenade with -5 aim.

Grab every night vision goggles that show up. Armour shredding ammo is great with high ROF weapons(smgs). Camo accessories are also nice.
The pirate pipe guns are less supply than the default rifle. Useful for minmaxing special weapons teams.
Pirate trucks with rocket organs are cheap and very effective.
Suppressed weapons aren't a tag, but they do have an effect. Concealed units won't be revealed.

The most important one especially on higher difficulties is the WOO. its my purchase after my first operation and I'll take worse outcomes on post mission events if it'll drop me below the 70 oci needed for it.
I think 1 or 2 woo can be huge early on. But I don't go as over board with prioritizing exwoo or what not if i have good armor and vehicles and i'm not taking much losses. Once you have a nice pool of 50-100 squadies in the late game it might be more beneficial to swap out WOO's for other better OCI's since squadies diminish in value once you have good armor and vehicles.

Other good OCIs
Repair bays (to keep vehicles in good health)
Salvage teams (great way to earn money if fighting pirates and rogue army alot,)
Fixers (the effect stacks, fixers help make all your loot more valuable, i think 2 is good if you get them early)
Ai logistics, but only if you're going vehicle heavy

Supply crate
laser turret
AP mine fields
and minigun strafing runs are probably the best for on map abilities. others are situational. Though something to be said for 3 unguided missiles and just nuking something from orbit.

Lastly I don't bother with sensor 1, i just save for sensor 2, and then I aim for 4-6 intelligence and maybe a utility option in the front.

Most of t1 weapons with mods are overpriced. Kpac is shit. Shotgun better than other early guns at short range.
You need to buy: cbar, shotgun, if need arc. You need to keep: pipe guns, outcasts rags, armor with jetppack. Also you want night vision, binoculares, ammo, camo trkinkets, jaeger's camos, silenced guns.

The first one, there are different variants of the weapon. In the case of the crowbar they are more expensive to use while not doing much to justify it. The extra range variant is overkill, the crowbar's biggest weakness is already that it loses most of its damage at the range it's accurate. The short range carbine variant is straight trash for obvious reasons. And the suppressed variant adds nothing except some extra accuracy, not worth it.

Suppressed Crowbar is sort of a waste, Stealth Darky is stealthy enough to overcome most vision checks even with a regular crowbar due to sheer distance.
Shooting a regular gun just removes your concealment bonuses, it doesn't make you MORE visible beyond that.
So give her a silenced ARC or KPAC instead.
