I can't speak for everyone who got into the game before Commander/EDH became the official darling of the casual play world, but I know I started by buying 2 boxes with a friend and some shitty cheap starter decks from non-standard sets at the time (Shards era, bough kamigawa precons) and just looking at all the cards and building goofy decks. Kitchen table players would always come to the LGS's I'd go to when a new set came out and do stuff like crack packs/boxes there, would have trade binders to look through, and would leave. Along with prereleases giving you some start chaff to use, those are the ways I can think of that people would take their first steps in magic before EDH. You could choose to look up cohesive cards and decks online if you wanted, but once you take that step, it's over for true casual play in your playgroup, and unfortunately almost everyone points new players to EDHRec.

It's just the idea of goijg to a website that catalogues the best combinations of cards and shoves it into the newbie's face with links to buy everything. Searching through catalogues or bulk boxes for cool stuff is far more on the level that I feel real casual play would be good for, which is why I said at the start that I think it'd be better for both them and content to go with someone to Hare or another store and just look for cool cards in the trash boxes and maybe buy a card or two from the case if they like the art.
