That accounting student (where tf did you see "lawyer in training"?) is talking about streaming platforms but this is more about platforms like Ko-fi or Streamlabs. From the various news articles I've seen talking about the plan (which is no law, yet), they want to target the jobs our chuubas do: streaming, podcasts, or online content creation in general. Now, whether or not what they promise can actually be applied is something we'll see, but there's intent.

VexPo 2025 Review: P1

If I was to describe the event in one single word; I’d have to borrow directly from the streaming lexicon and deem it “Scuffed”.

Friday’s complete mismanagement embodies the sentiment of “Scuffed”. Whilst VexPo doesn’t formally start until Saturday, Akasupa (Early Bird) ticket holders and select general public members had the chance to purchase entry for the "Opening Concert" held on Friday evening featuring a variety of talent from the indie and corpo sector. Jelly sang Invisible by Duran Duran.

Now enter the problems.

With this being held at the “NEC” in Birmingham, you had to be in Birmingham for one. Next comes miscommunication, with most volunteer staff unable to ever provide clear answers. In turn, they had to abide by various health and safety measures implemented by the “NEC” venue; one of which saw the method of how lines got managed. Regular purchases in the left line, Aka in the right. Once the Aka line reached a certain length, it had to be sub-divided. This is due to the amount of ticket cabinets VexPo was legally allowed to open. It only gets worse! The QR system intended for ticket purchases wasn’t live. Meaning that everyone had to be manually processed in. For whatever reason, VexPo staff decided to permit ALL attendees the same ticket pick-up time. Without the scan system in place and with the queues sub-divided, this meant that on average; more non-Aka purchased tickets got processed before others due to length differences.. Defeating the point of the £60 to £120 price difference depending on when you paid and how many days you intended to attend for. Meanwhile the line system was just handwaved with a “rush to the front” method applied to entering the actual concert. The inconsistent micromanaging of the lines are a core theme (and fuck up) during the whole convention. MCM (another con in the UK) already has a time-gated system to ease people in per-payment tier. Ideally this is what VexPo does next time.

Something you won’t hear from many who attended was the fact that "influencers" and “media” could be permitted the chance to skip lines and engage with planned Meet & Greet talent. Which just so happened to occur in the biggest section featuring the likes of Project Melody, Dokibird and Matara Kan. Merryweather also would abruptly barge into whatever M&G he liked. Due to this and general technical issues at VexPo hosted gatherings, the average line time went over by almost an hour. In the case of the names I had listed, some almost took two to three hours. I received multiple reports from attendees of volunteer staff providing misinformation or outright lies to those in line for the M&G’s. Some got kicked out and told to line up again due to “required breaks”, others claiming that they needed the “Idol Anarchy” ticket to be present in the area despite it not being at the concert hall or said concert not starting for another few hours. Neither were confirmed true by the VexPo staff I enquired. I am hoping a feedback form is emailed to attendees, as one particular volunteer member spent a good amount of the convention on a power trip. But given he was shorter than most women in attendance, this does not surprise me.

As mentioned, VexPo organised events had countless tech issues. One seems to have been self-imposed. I was told by people involved and those attending conflicting panels of choice that VexPo had its own OBS plugin designed for the convention. This plug-in fucked pretty much every concert hosted locally in some manner. Opening, Idol Anarchy, Brit Concert and some others would either have audio delay, video delay or sometimes not even output one or the other. Whereas V4M and Globie seemingly learned from prior cons, with many performances pre-recorded with ad-lib speaking segments in between. Phase had Lia performing so you wouldn’t be able to tell anyway.

VexPo 2025 Review: P2

Away from VexPo branded chaos, the external stands seemingly knew the deal at hand. The Phase booth was a consistent hub of fan interaction and regularly selling merchandise with a delightful Pippa cosplayer keeping tabs on everything. The layout was perfect to keep traffic moving. Brave had two ends of the venue covered, with a very active merch stand besides Phase and depressingly empty at times Globie GIGA booth on the opposite side of the hall. Kawa Entertainment’s booth was messy with minimal branding but action packed. MosoBox had a lot of /here/ names doing M&G for free as did Veizo. I had not heard much of either, but these guys absolutely overdelivered and outdid VexPo at its own game. No tech issues from either. If anyone from those brands are just as /here/ as Kiki, pat yourself on the back. Variance Project and Re:Loop had some solid presence too, but I actively didn’t engage with them. Penny Puffball is cute I guess is my takeaway from them. IZIGENIA had staff roaming around on Saturday but that agency is still too young to judge on said actions. ASTRALINE was just the shite card game, with Merry and Lumi shitposting IRL. I saw other stands with iPads for indie M&G’s, but I didn’t actively partake because I felt it would be disrespectful to go up to them and spout vapid bullshit.

Panels and activities… It’s not that the placements or times didn’t make sense. It’s just the whole damn hall didn’t make sense at all. VexPo hosted M&G’s took place in the dead centre, which also meant you had to deal with line system autism. Thus if you wanted to go to the front or back of the venue, the traffic was gridlock in the middle. The Maid Cafe, which had some very family friendly rules, was sat right next to the 18+ art section. Sure, it had a veil, but it’s still stupid. The "activity stage” was boxed in by the entrance walkway leading to a lot of feedback noise. Poor Amiya just wanted to play retro games… I think what baffles me most is that this is a bigger hall than the year prior. They had plenty of time to overview the scope of the space provided and rather than play Tetris and nearly stack everything in, it was more a game of Hungry Hungry Hippos with everyone fighting for the middle.

Subject of hippos, let’s talk about the attendees just for a second. SO MANY OF YOU MOTHERFUCKERS STINK. The “NEC” had several hotels within walking distance. Most of you cunts told me so because it was one of the go to conversation points apparently for the socially inexperienced. That or they hoped I’d ask to fuck. Spraying your outer shirt with Lynx (Axe to Americans reading) does not stop the smell. It just layers it with a new stank. I’ve been to a lot of conventions and I’ve never encountered such heavy musk. Mostly Holo fans too I gotta point out. I went to nearly all of the fan meets and you guys wore sweat stain shirts like it’s something of pride. Calling you out Tako. Fuck two of the hotels I know offer free shampoo and gel AS STANDARD with your room. WASH YO’ PITS, FACE AND WHATEVER ELSE. CHRIST.

Apart from the aroma from some, the fan meets are basically THE selling point to VexPo outside interacting with your oshi. What you thought BUYING THINGS would be the highlight? No. The community effort I witnessed is truly outstanding and shows the pure nature of the vtubing fandom; amplifying only how shit /vt/ is at the best of times.. I saw a Niji fangirl at the Doki meet and not deem her the devil, I saw Phase fans going to grab some of Shondo’s cookies and not demand she apologise to Fishman. I even saw motherfuckers walk past the Globie section and actually give them a glance. Hell, I think I received far more free custom fan merch than what I ended up paying for. Shout outs to the /vrt/ anon and his pins might I add. You know who you are.

“But anon, I am anti-social as fuck” than frankly you’d fucking hate VexPo. Everywhere I went, people spoke and took the time to interact. Stinky or not. I saw a Black dude in a Mint coloured suit. He had flown in from Italy just for the fan gathering and to be with Wisps. I engaged with multiple French girls who came over because Cass from First Stage Production was doing a panel. I bumped into a guy who had flown in from Portugal because he just wanted the chance to get merchandise without huge tax hikes via shipping. One of my personal favourite interactions came from a young lady from Japan, very broken English, who just missed seeing cosplayers as she recently moved to London. If VexPo can take any credit, any pride in what it has done, it’s allowed for so many fandoms to have a place to connect on a deeper, personal level.

VexPo 2025 Review: P3/Final

Now for some random throwaway points that don’t need to be detailed
>The “NEC” staff have their own rules that clash with VexPo's own, leading to a lot of issues during closing hours. I saw a shouting match almost break out because the NEC guards refused someone back in who had (from my observation) won one of the standee bids. The VexPo staff snuck them back in and the person was out with the standee moments later
>If issues continue with Birmingham, Bristol would be the better spot to move to. London, Manchester etc. VexPo ain’t got the staff or foresight to risk such high traffic locations
>Standee sales. Dokibird went for £700, Mint was around £130+ and most of Globie’s didn’t even hit £10. Ouch
>Reform UK was hosting a con at the same time. You can imagine the fun these groups had upon passing one another
>If you are planning to come next year, any of the hotels near the venue are fine. The NEC is near a large mall with lots of food options. Going inner city or AirBNB will just see you paying more and having less time at the venue
>VexPo staff, having the Vtubers attending wearing face masks does nothing if you have them followed around with security wearing shirts that say “SECURITY” printed on the front and back. Basically put a spotlight on Froot all weekend.

I’ll close on this. If the core team that founded VexPo somehow reads this, a harsh amount of self-reflection is going to be required if they have any hopes of an improved expansion. Have a side-hall to put your panels and concerts, allow for the main hall to have more room for merch stands and other stuff. I saw you guys attempt video-games this year. Great. Just remember. You cramp the nerds together, it gets stinky. Side hall lets you do your line autism too away from everything else. TIME GATED ENTRY IF YOU ARE GONNA MAKE PEOPLE PAY £100 EXTRA. Oh and you should also pray that nobody else finds motivation to upstage you. If you fail to learn from this weekend, I could see another European con emerging and taking the buzz away. Though it would likely have to be in a country comfortable with English like Denmark.

If anyone has any questions or wants me to expand on the details shared, please do so.

Thank you anon. I seem to remember there being a lot of tech issues with Offkai too in the past, though fewer seemingly this year.
>I saw a Niji fangirl at the Doki meet and not deem her the devil, I saw Phase fans going to grab some of Shondo’s cookies and not demand she apologise to Fishman. I even saw motherfuckers walk past the Globie section and actually give them a glance.
It's always nice to have reminders that the catalog is not reality.

So based on all this would you go again despite the issues? Would you recommend to other anons interested to go next year?
