Mascots generally don't but creative works do. And I vastly prefer their system to ours, where companies like Warner Bros. shit on the legacy of J.R.R. Tolkien or DC continues to pump out boring, uninspired slop of the same characters for literally ***100 years*** by various artists and writers that have no respect for the original.The Japanese's respect for artists means that their creations are tied to their creators and so their creators can't be fired or replaced, for better and for worse. This leads to a really healthy industry where new IP, characters, and worlds are constantly created by new people. Meanwhile here in the West, it's almost impossible to get your original work published by a big company, and instead you'll be asked to write/illustrate the newest run of Superman or Batman. I like The Dark Knight movie as much as the next person, but the creative industry in the US is essentially dead, with no new billion dollar level IP created in the last 10 years.
