Tank controls are fundamentally a constraint of early controller designs, where you didn't have a control stick and didn't have 2 d-pads to move your character, so to cope you had up/down move the character forward/back in whatever direction they were facing, with left/right rotating the character. Like a tank. The instant the analog stick was invented that allowed you to freely move your character in a circle, this was already obsolete. And then controllers with 2 sticks that let you both rotate the camera and move the PC at the same time came along, further putting tank controls in the grave.

Focus on the why instead of the what, if you're gonna make somthing new then ask why the classic developers put it there in the first place, what where they trying to achieve? Rather than artstyle I would say the biggest thing lacking is vision, if you want to see a masterclass in vision look at Dark Souls and Elden Ring.

In the process of perfecting these systems they go through playtests and a director has to evaluate what needs tweaking and changing. This then goes through a round of producers who might say "well we need this mechanic in the game, because it's doing really well right now". The game loses its vision because every system is fighting for its place and attention, every artwork is made to be as good as it possibly can be instead of being the correct piece of art.The difference with FromSoft and what used to be the difference is the studio is almost entirely separate from the producers and from the testers. For its scale the development team is much smaller, for a classic platformer teams could be anywhere from 10-20 people with programmers acting in part as designers and collaborating with artists. FromSoft famously works with smaller budgets and smaller teams, now the beautiful thing that happens here is the vision, every element that is put in the game is there to serve Miyazaki's vision, it isn't there because the game needed a "deep customizable skill system" or something everything is designed with a similar level of detail and care. The story and setting of the game is kept deliberately obtuse so that it can be changed on a whim, the story always serves the gameplay. When you find even the smallest item, the lore of that item connects it directly to something else in the world, even the placement of the item has significance. Something else it does really well instead of using exposition the game peaks your curiosity, you'll often find "the odd one out" the npc that doesn't belong, you progress and eventually you figure out the reason why he's there. I could go on there are more examples

Hollow Knight started putting questlines and all sorts of nonsense in theirs. If you don't think your questline is necessary then it doesn't need to be in the game, you do not need to bloat your game with content that's stupid. The game went through it's natural development cycle and later added "fun modes" you could try out (which I didn't).Hollow Knight had questlines and areas added as part of their kickstarter, this isn't unique to HK but often times you encounter "kickstarter content" in games which is a signal you should skip it because it's all slop put in there with no care.
