Isekai is only good if the fact the MC is from our world makes a meaningful contribution to the plot beyond being a vehicle for exposition, the vast majority don't do this. However, a bunch of them also don't execute this very well - e.g. in stories where the MC is able to use some modern knowledge to advance a medieval fantasy world they often massively over-exaggerate it and make the natives into total retards that reward anyone who handholds them with insane success.

My most favourite isekai of all time is Brutal Legend. The game gets kind of confused in the later stages in what it wants its gameplay to be but the world is so awesome and the main character being from another world is a major driving force in the plot. I really wish they'd revive the concept with a more cohesive gameplay vision.

I've actually been coming up with my own isekai story for a little while now which I need to longpost about. I only have very limited bits and pieces of prose so far but I have the plot, characters and world mostly worked out.

A brief description of it would be that the MC is a woman who gets isekai'd into a relatively low-magic late-medieval fantasy world (it has some eastern fantasy tropes but is mostly western fantasy - if I had to compare it to something I'd say it's closest to Warhammer), which is the world of a book she had read recently. It might be obvious this started as a riff on romantasy manhwa/webtoons about being isekai'd into a book and how formulaic most of them are, but I eventually started taking it seriously, and I now quite like the premise of it.

She "invents" gunpowder weapons (she doesn't know all the specifics but knows enough from studying history in our world to fill in the blanks with experimentation) and uses her knowledge of what happens in the book to position herself as a prophet, and she amasses a following of rebellious serfs and slaves, equips them with muskets and cannon and leads a revolt to crown herself Empress of what definitely isn't the Holy Roman Empire. There's also a bunch of bullshit about fighting demons on the way, which is the main way she gains legitimacy as a prophet.

That's the basic frame of the "plot", but the "story" is really an attempt to do an honest exploration of psychopathy without villainising or romanticising it. The MC has a bunch of classic psychopathic traits (little to no sense of empathy, no remorse, cool-headed under stress, socialises through manipulation, and only understands relationships in transactional terms) and it's about how that damages both the people around her and herself, and how psychopaths are capable of both good and evil. It doesn't have a particularly happy ending, as she does achieve almost all her goals (some of which are objectively good, e.g. abolishing slavery), but it comes at a huge human cost and her behaviour drives away most of those close to her.

Unclear if I'll ever finish writing it at this point as I rarely finish writing anything, but it's been fun to worldbuild about at least.
