If by some miracle you're actually a tourist and not a shitposter, last year Nijisanji's english branch had a horrific scandal involving one of their most popular girls where she attempted suicide after a buildup of harassment and mismanagement from the company and other streamers.
Afterwards, the company terminated her with a laundry list of fake or misleading claims and did everything they could to torch her reputation in an attempt to make sure she couldn't continue her career, and then had her branchmates and "friends" release a black stream alleging that she was a monster who hated everybody and was a nuisance to the branch. (This is something they have done before to better success.)
As she was easily the most well liked and well connected NijiEN member outside of the company, nobody bought it and the entire thing blew up in their face. It escaped into the general media and the company got slammed. People unsubscribed from the members en masse to throw their support behind the girl, and NijiEN's reputation never really recovered after that, with most of their audience drying up and sales for both events and merch reaching pathetically low levels.

Not every hololive fan is gonna be the same, but there are gonna be toxic people in any large group of people.
"Idol culture" in this case mostly refers to not talking to men, not getting a boyfriend, etc. in order to encourage the lonely male audience into having a "girlfriend experience." Not all vtubers engage with it, but it's common enough that said fans often leave their bubbles and get upset when they find out that it doesn't apply to someone new. Yes, they're mentally ill, but they often have money so they get pandered to.
Mint by comparison doesn't really have that stigma or those kinds of fans due to other reasons, so I can see why one would see her as a "safer" alternative.
