In a way its kinda neat to see a decent handful of "us", but the production quality threshold is way higher than it used to be. VRM types seem useful not just for VTuber setups but also for say...VRChat or the like, other stuff with full body capture should you wish it, though that would take additional rigging and configuration. I thought this would be an area that 3D / VRM models have a significant advantage in the comparative ease to add such items. So if someone was looking into creating a new anime style avatar (as masculine adult male) is there a perception to strongly choose one or the other either technically or aesthetically? I'd first lean toward 3D from my admittedly outdated personal experience comparison, as you mention mention that it is experiencing a resurgence for all the reasons discussed and that aesthetics/designs are now seen as equally viable, but if there are good reasons to look more deeply into Live2D again I'd give it an equal appraisal as I imagine it too has evolved.

Unless its the sort of stream where the streamer is likely to get up and walk around, (which isn't really something that happens with most vtubers) then there's very little to be gained from the third dimension. Live2d is, on average and not counting discount options like vroids (which are the picrew of vtubing), is cheaper and cleaner looking than the majority of 3d solutions for the same budget. 3d becomes valuable once there are enhanced layers of tracking, content that requires full body motion (concerts with full body presentation and motion) or pratfall content like Filian's act. 3d really just doesn't offer anything that most vtubers will ever actually use in a form that usually either looks worse overall or takes more resources to utilize effectively.
