Commander is the most casual format outside of kitchen table.I honestly wish they would have just went to Hareruya together and picked through the bulk boxes picking cards on vibes and art and cobbled together a deck that way. I get that it's probably easier to just put together a pile of cards you can order because a list is handed to you, but it would have been way cooler to have them go to one of the Hareruya locations and get a lesson or two on basic mechanics + help picking out bulk cards. Tcg store people are usually really friendly to women who walk through the door showing any interest at all.
Singles allow much more versatility to deck building and fun experiences. Most people aren't sweaties that want 100% consistency. But it would be more fun to watch them play with at least 3 players.
